2 Page 2 News from Around the Village Archbishop Sentamu comes to Askham Bryan Peter Stefanini reports As readers probably know, the Archbishop has been engaged in a six month Diocesan Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness and Blessing visiting each of the deaneries in the diocese. His pilgrimage began at Whitby Abbey on Advent Sunday 2015 and finishes at York Minster on Trinity Sunday 22 May Taking inspiration from the great northern saints Aidan, Cuthbert and Hilda, he has been meeting people on the road and in churches, halls and houses in the diocese and praying with them. As I meet with people and talk about their hopes and dreams, their fears and disappointments, I will also pray with them, knowing that each time we cry out to God, He hears and responds. On Wednesday 27 th April, the Archbishop came to Askham Bryan. Travelling from Copmanthorpe, where he had celebrated the Eucharist earlier in the day, the Archbishop first visited Askham Bryan College where he spent time meeting the staff and students. He then came on to the village where we met in the village hall for refreshments. In an informal get together, the Archbishop chatted with local people and answered their questions. He pointed out that the sturdy boots he was wearing for this pilgrimage were the same ones he had used for a pilgrimage when he was Bishop of Birmingham more than ten years ago. (A lesson in conservation for all of us!) He spoke of the importance of getting out and meeting people in the community which was the motivation for his pilgrimage. The Archbishop then conducted Pilgrimage Prayers in St Nicholas Church. He talked about the central importance of the Lord s Prayer in worship and we prayed together using beads which he supplied for the occasion. He also spoke of the need for unconditional forgiveness of our neighbours. The spiritual impact of this service was considerable and the beads and prayer cards have been used in our own prayers since. I am not sure when the last visit by an Archbishop of York to Askham Bryan took place, but the informality of this visit by Archbishop Sentamu will be fondly remembered for many years to come. Village Coffee and Chat Mornings Jennifer Smith writes These are still proving a popular social event and we Coffee Morning Dates continue to support local charities. Since the last Wed 15th Jun newsletter we have supported the village playing Wed 20th Jul field, Askham Richard school (for some books) and Wed 17th Aug Askham Bryan Craft club to help with postage for sending the children s knitted jumpers abroad. We have just topped the 2000 worth of donations since we started in April 2013 and a big thank you to everyone who supports us. Children s Society Boxes Jennifer Smith writes We sent the sum of to the Children s Society this year. Many thanks to all the box holders who continue to support the charity. There are spare boxes if anyone would like to have one for their spare change!

She was also a member of the Sewing group that meets each week in our village hall and produced marvellous patchwork and tapestry work amongst other things. Members responded to the request to knit small children s jumpers to be strung up at WI House in Thirsk for the Tour de Yorkshire. We sent 27 jumpers from our Institute and they were all being sent to a refugee centre afterwards. Several members attended a Tapas evening at York Cookery School, a choir concert at Copmanthorpe and the Spring Council Meeting at Scarborough where the speaker was Lesley Smith the Curator of Tutbury Castle. Four members are visiting the Silk Research Group at the University of Oxford and the Bodleian Library and Restoration Workshops on a two day visit at the end of May. Page 4

5 All villagers are invited to The Village Hall AGM Thursday 18 th August at 7.30pm Page 5 Church News Baptisms taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford Ann Manning reports Iris Peggy born 10th September 2015 was baptised during the Mothering Sunday family communion service. Iris is the daughter of Christopher James and Victoria Emily Peart who live in the village. George Ronald born 6th September 2015 was baptised on April 3 rd during the family communion service. George is the son of Thomas Stephen and Gemma Elle Dunmore. Gemma was brought up in Woodthorpe which was then part of the village of Askham Bryan. They were married here and live in Woodthorpe Funeral Services Ann Manning reports A funeral service for Aurea May Smith age 93 years was taken by the Revd Alan Hughes on March 3 rd. Aurea was brought up in Askham Bryan and was the wife of the late Reginald and mother of the late Angela. She was sister to Mary, Teville and the late Robin and Albert Dales. She lived in Acomb for many years more recently moving to Holme-on-Spalding-Moor near her grandson Stephen whom she brought up. Her Ashes are now interred in the churchyard by those of her husband and daughter. A private family funeral and burial service was taken on May 6 th by the Revd Geoff Mumford for Ronald Lorriman (Ron). Ron and his family have lived in the village for many years. Ron leaves a wife, Sue and sons Guy and Julian and their families. Ron will be sadly missed by all his family and many friends. An Apology The Church Representative and the Newsletter Editor have apologised to Mrs Jacqui Bryan for the error in the report of the funeral of Jacqui s Mother in the last issue. It should have read: Dawn Pilcher - A Celebration for the Life of Dawn Pilcher, who died in December aged 97, was taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford at Askham Bryan on 1 st February. A tribute given by her son told of a very varied and interesting life. Her Grandson, Simon Pilcher, gave the bible reading and grandson, Ross Bryan, read a poem. Her daughter, Jacqui Bryan, arranged the beautiful flowers in her memory.

6 Dear Friends A Word from Our Vicar The summer brings with it the Annual Askham Bryan Garden Party organised by the Church. I would encourage you to attend this event which provides the opportunity to meet with fellow villagers, enjoy a traditional village activity and at the same time have some fun. The hope is that the summer will also bring some warm, sunny weather which we can all enjoy it also helps raise funds for the church! It was in 1 Kings 17:1 that Elijah is recorded as telling King Ahab that the drought that was devastating the land had come in defiance of Baal As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word. The longer the drought dragged on, the more obvious it would become that Baal was not the great god his followers thought him to be; but that Yahweh was the only Great God. Elijah made it crystal clear that the devastating drought and famine were sent by God and not by Baal. The people had to be made to understand that it was God, not Baal, who was in control and it would be God, not Baal, who would end the drought. The Israelites were about to learn that God is not only in control of the human realm but also the realm of nature. And Elijah in being faithful to God, was proved right. Now don t panic, I m not going to be praying for either a drought or rain after this wet winter and spring we have had. Sure we want a dry summer, and we also need rain. A drought can be almost as devastating as flood. Perhaps we could just pray that we don t have a downpour on the day of the Garden Party! I draw this to your attention to make the point that prayer does work, when it is focused on God and his will. God wants us to pray and trust him for the answer. That doesn t mean expecting God to answer our prayers in the way we want them to be answered, but seeing them answered in God s way. God knows the bigger picture, whereas we don t. He knows what is round the corner, we don t. When we pray we are showing our trust in God that he is in control, no-one and nothing else.
