FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 3, 2016 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for wanting to call down fire from heaven (Luke 9:54 55) on an unwelcoming town. As he sends forth disciples today, Jesus again forbids retaliation against non-receptive listeners (10:10 11), showing us how to be Jesus missionaries of mercy this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to proclaim ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also to work together in the community of the Church. We often describe the Church as Isaiah describes Jerusalem in today s first reading, our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So, going forth gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share comforting peace, nurturing food and drink (Luke s image for Eucharist), and Jesus healing promise of unfailing, unconditional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus bids us proclaim the kingdom of God by showing what God s kingdom looks like in action. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that we re having a baptism today, or maybe you say we are having a christening. The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of christening in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being Christ-ed. No matter what you call it, there s always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ s presence poured upon the brow as we say, As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life. So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you even though you may be squirming or sleeping are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more Christ-ed. It is a great opportunity to meet your fellow parishioners and community people while serving your parish. Offer a few hours or more by filling out a volunteer sheet or simply contact the chair (complete list on back of bulletin). Parishioners, their families & friends are encouraged to lend a hand during this wonderful, community event. Set-Up/Take Down > begins Tuesday, July 5. There are plenty of tasks to go around simply come to the fairgrounds Monday-Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to dark. Coordinated by Austin Anderson & John Kruis, your help is needed to put up booths and fencing, clean refrigerators, bring out supplies, and much more. Electrician Don Engelhart also gets into action. Some strong, young individuals are needed to help load bags of sliced beef into refrigerator trucks. Ox Roasts are wrapped in muslin Tuesday & the cooked beef is then sliced Wednesday & Thursday. Distribution > Donnie & Cathy Sherbondy are looking for some energetic folks to help get all the supplies out to the booths. A great opportunity for high school students to earn service hours. Pits > Ron Kotkowski & crew will share the secrets of how to roast 3,500 lbs. of beef. Pits are fired up beginning Tuesday, July 12, for batch #1 & #2 (of 3). Ride Tickets > If you could use air-conditioned comfort & lots of smiles, offer Ruth Skocdopole some time at the Midway Ride Ticket Booth. Raffle Tickets > If you enjoy meeting new people, Craig & Sherry Randall welcome your help. Cash Office > Barb Colin heads up this important area and could use a few money counters. Parking > Russ Rennecker with the Crestwood Youth Wrestling group will be giving us a hand organizing the parking. We will need folks to collection the money at the Fair s entrance. Tractor & Truck Pulls > This crowd pleaser could always use more parishioner involvement. Lend a hand to Tim Rooth if you enjoy these events. T-Shirts > A quieter booth near the Cake Booth is headed by Kathi & George Trares. Stop by & say hi! Run of the Ox 5K Walk/Run & 1M Fun Walk > Brian & Jen Hirsch are coordinating this fun event with HMA Promotions. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m. Come out and run or walk your choice of the 5K out & back course down Bowen Rd. or the 1M course on parish grounds. Casino & Instant Bingo > Adults familiar with casino games may wish to lend a hand & help Greg Pastor in Hughes Hall or the outside area. Stan & Annette Carlisle welcome instant bingo helpers. Beer Booths > Those who are of age may lend a hand to Ken & Kat Puchowicz by the Pulls or Lyle & Lynda Tayerle by the Entertainment Tent or Steven Tayerle in the Craft Beer Tent near the Beer Garden. Cake Booth > Lots of baked goods of all sorts are needed each day. Let s keep them well supplied! French Fries > Andrea & Michael Schreiner could use some help serving tons of fries in a busy booth. Gyros > Located near the pulls Joe & Candy Ober s booth could use several more hands. Walking Tacos > New chairs Jason & Debby Kline welcome your assistance in their location near Hamburgers & Hotdogs. Hamburgers & Hotdogs > Welcoming help for these classic American favorites are Lonn & Dan Safko. They offer a Happy Ox Meal for the kids mini hamburg or hotdog, apple slices, small fry, and drink box or milk all in a cute box! Dining Hall Kitchen > The Sullivans are looking for older students & adults to help with the serving line. Lemon Shake-Up > Rob & Teri Perhach invite you to shake things up for this refreshing treat. Fried Veggies > Theresa Hood will cheerfully provide on the job training for any willing volunteers. SUPPORT CATHOLIC CHARITIES SUMMER HUNGER CAMPAIGN In the United States, approximately 22 million children rely on free or reduced priced meals during the school year, yet only 2.7 million access free meals in the summer when school is out. According to Feeding America s latest Map the Meal Gap: Child Food Insecurity Estimates at County Levels, the six counties that make up the Diocese of Youngstown Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage, Stark and Trumbull Counties average a child food insecurity rate of 25%, compared with 23.8% for the state of Ohio. This statistic means that one in four children in our six county service area are experiencing hunger or are at risk for hunger right now. Show your support for Catholic Charities Summer Hunger Campaign by purchasing a special bracelet, available on our website at Bracelets are $6.00 each, which includes the cost of mailing. All proceeds will help stock our Catholic Charities pantries, so that clients can access food on the spot when they come to our agencies for assistance.
