When we hear a Gospel passage such as today s, we may think that we could never come close to imitating Christ. After all, he had such miraculous power. The story of the cleansing and curing of the leper may have something deeper to teach us. In the Lord s time, people were simply not to go near a leper. To touch a leper was unthinkable. It rendered the person ritually impure and susceptible to contagion. Just listen to today s first reading to find out how lepers were to be treated. Jesus goes beyond the usual boundaries and, moved with pity, heals the man. We are called to be like Christ to move beyond those boundaries that prevent healing and reconciliation from occurring. Some of these boundaries we set up ourselves. As the cleansing word of God is proclaimed today, let us pray that God will help us to reach across established boundaries to embrace and be reconciled with those whom today s world sees as unclean. 2 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Lent, the Church s annual pre baptismal retreat, prepares us to gather around the Easter font, renew our baptismal vows, and receive new life from the water as the elect are plunged into Christ s death and resurrection. This core meaning is more or less available, depending on whether we journey with catechumens in the parish and on the vigor of our liturgical celebration of the Triduum. Some persist in seeing Lent as a lonely journey in the wilderness; yet this week we enter the Lenten fast in solidarity with one another. The smudged foreheads you will spy throughout Ash Wednesday on buses, street corners, and supermarket aisles remind you that you are hardly alone in your desire to enact a spring cleaning regime for your spiritual life. Long ago, this kind of repentance was available to Christians only once. Ashes and sackcloth were not raiment for a day, but permanent habits for public sinners. Fasting became a way of life, and if they sinned severely again, there was no hope of restored communion. Happily, this system did not endure. It produced reluctant Christians who even held back from baptism, like St. Augustine did, out of fear. Today we have recovered an ancient tradition that conversion and repentance are constant themes on life s journey, and that Lent is an annual opportunity to revive our baptismal identity, both as individuals and communities. We can readily understand why someone with a contagious disease who be excluded from group gatherings in a primitive society that like of Jesus day. What a great gift to heal this individual and return him to the society he had been kept away from. In our own day, there are those who are excluded. In the past we may have not been picked for a ball team, or asked to a party or a dance. To be left out is not a good feeling. Today even in our midst there are those who are excluded, because of a disability, age, ethnicity or even hygiene. We have to look with eyes of faith at the actions and the teachings of Jesus. They aren t just something for Sunday school or an hour s visit to church. Lord, we pray, as we are about to enter the Lenten season, for the grace of honesty with ourselves and conversion from the sinful and selfish parts of our lives. Your grace will be enough for us. Help us humbly and courageously begin our Lenten journey this week! Fr. 3 Lent 2015 This season, also called "Quadraegesima," meaning "Forty," is a somber, penitential Season lasting from Ash Wednesday to the Thursday before Easter. It recalls Christ's 40 days in the desert, and the Israelites' wandering in the desert for 40 years. Per the everyday calendar, Lent lasts 40 days plus the six Sundays, but the Sundays aren't counted as "Lent" because Sundays are always about the Resurrection and are joyous. The annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the holy mountain of Easter. The Lenten season has a double character, namely to prepare both catechumens and faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. The catechumens, both with the rite of election and scrutinies, and by catechesis, are prepared for the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation; the faithful, ever more attentive to the word of God and prayer, prepare themselves by penance for the renewal of their baptismal promises. This season prepares all of us for the celebration of Easter, the most important feast of the Church year. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten journey towards Easter and eternal life. Now truly is our time to be healed and reconciled to God and to one another. The mark of ashes on our foreheads reminds us of our sinfulness and our turning back to God for forgiveness, healing and mercy. After we leave the church, we leave the ashes on our foreheads until they wear off naturally from the course of the day's activities. They are a public witness to those things our society does not wish to embrace: the reality of death, and the hope of resurrection in Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Ash Wednesday Mass will be at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. You are welcome to attend either service. The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus Passion and Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ s love for us. Please plan to join our parish family as Joanne Sawyer leads the Stations of the Cross based on the Stations led by Pope John Paul II. Everyone may gather Friday afternoons of Lent at 3:00 p.m. in the church as she leads prayer & reflection for the Way of the Cross. All are welcome. 4 NO PSR CLASSES ~ February 15 WINTER GAMES DONATIONS NEEDED This year s Winter Games will be held during PSR on February 22! We are asking for donations of old trophies that we can be repurposed for the games. Any old trophies or medallions will do. You can drop these off during office hours at the Parish Center or on Sundays in the narthex. Also, we need volunteers for the big day. FREE COMMUNITY MEAL Our next Free Community Meal is on Sunday, February 22, 12:30-2:00 p.m. We need donations of Italian bread and desserts for this meal. If you can help us out, bring your donation to the Hughes Hall kitchen on Saturday, February 21, or on Sunday morning before the meal. Our PSR 2 nd and 6 th grade classes will be serving on this day, so parents, please mark your calendars. BURNING OF PALMS We will be burning palms Sunday, March 1, at the beginning of PSR. As followers of Jesus, we make sacrifices that will bring His love and hope to the less fortunate served by Catholic Charities. Our support will also enable our Diocesan Church to provide traditional programs which meet pastoral needs and enhance Jesus Mission in our time and place. Bishop Murry is counting on the support of every parish family to meet our parish goal of $32, LENTEN FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast and Abstinence - limit of one full meal and two smaller meals for persons 18 through 59 years of age; no meat for persons 14 years of age and older. All Fridays during Lent are days of Abstinence - no meat for persons 14 years of age and older. There is no obligation to fast during the weekdays of Lent. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are encouraged. FREE COMMUNITY MEAL Our next Free Community Meal will be on Sunday, February 22, 12:30-2:00 p.m. in Hughes Hall. This effort is done in conjunction with our PSR program, parish organizations, and the church communities in our area. Our goal is to provide a nutritious meal and fellowship to those in need. TETÉLESTAI 2015 Cleveland Performing Arts Ministries musical passion play Tetélestai will be presented at Holy Angels Church, Chillicothe Rd., Chagrin Falls, OH 44023, on February, 13, 14, and 15. Tetélestai s dramatic stage production and timeless music tell the story of Jesus trial, execution, and resurrection in a visual way that will leave a lasting impression.
