THE HEAVENLY BANQUET The mountain of the Lord described in today's first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. 2 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1971, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship completed a survey of the presidents of the national liturgical commissions around the world. How were children doing in the liturgical reform? Probably to their surprise, the cardinals learned of special weekday Masses for children designed to teach them how to participate on Sunday, Masses with separate components for children. The decision was made quickly to develop adaptations for Masses where children were a majority of the assembly. Changes would include a simpler structure, understandable texts, a simplified Lectionary, more active participation, and most surprisingly, new Eucharistic Prayers. By 1973 the work was done, and with very specific advice from Pope Paul VI, including the need for two new Eucharistic Prayers, the Directory for Masses with Children was published on December 20, a timely Christmas gift for the children of the world. The prayers are the first to be written fresh in a modern language--not Latin, but French and German--then translated into English, Italian, and Spanish. We sometimes ignore the invitations and opportunities but God persistently and relentlessly invites and welcomes us. An open, hopeful and grateful heart is how God s invitation can be best received. My friend Joann was a very dedicated nurse and caregiver for many years. When the time came for her to recognize her need to enter assisted living she did it graciously and with gratitude that she had the wisdom and resources that would allow for her needs to be met. Joann, to this day, never misses an opportunity to provide the ministry of comfort and advocacy for others as they experience loss or other difficulties. She is a reminder to me of how I can be blinded by selfishness or lack of appreciation for the gifts that God lavishes upon me. May we pray for the wisdom and strength to respond to the opportunities God gives us to share our gifts generously and compassionately with others. Fr. Thanks to Fr. Ed Stafford and Deacon Gerry Scopilliti for their support of this activity in officiating the Mass. Thank you to all Sir Knights who attended. A special thanks to Joe Yash, Bill Custer, Jim Fields, and anyone else involved for helping set up the refreshments for those in attendance along with the clean up afterwards. On Respect Life Sunday, October 1, a Life Chain was held at the Ravenna Court House. Attending the event were K of C members Marvin Litz, Lonn Safko, Bill Bash, and Ed Zwolinski (not pictured). IN LOVING MEMORY You may have noticed that the diseased ash tree in front of the Parish Center has been removed. Another tree will be planted in this area next to our sign in memory of Bernice Heritage who was a long time member of the Garden Club.

FIREWOOD AVAILABLE After the logging on St. Joseph s property to raise money for the church roof was completed, there were smaller parts of the trees that were not harvested left on the ground. This wood is available to parishioners and friends who are willing to come and cut firewood for themselves. We ask that you please call the Parish Office ( ) when you will be on the property. Only downed trees may be taken (do not cut any standing trees). A donation to St. Joe s is not required but graciously accepted. BLESSING OF PETS A nice crowd came out with their pets on Saturday, October 7, for the Blessing of Pets in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4). Thank you to Fr.
