JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus royal portrait is the cross. From this throne, the crucified crown prince welcomes by executive pardon the kingdom of mercy s first citizen, a fellow criminal. The Good Thief requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: Remember me when... (Luke 23:42). Today you will be with me, King Jesus promises, in paradise. (23:43). Paradise, even for nonbelievers, is an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow creatures, and Creator. Today, we good thieves beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to remember that, although Jesus kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus returns, that kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Among the Catholics seeking religious freedom in America were the Carrolls of Maryland, who arrived in 1649 from Ireland via England.

As was the custom for English Catholics, he attended English schools in Belgium and later university in France.

Because Carroll was so wealthy and because he was a Catholic, he had more to lose than the others. Those who signed became traitors to the Crown and risked losing everything.

For that reason, he added a flair to his signature, of Carrollton, making it clear that he put everything at risk.

Upheavals in Europe forced the Jesuit order to dissolve, leaving Carroll a secular priest. Ultimately, it was John Carroll who was asked to organize the Catholic Church in the new nation.

Charles Carroll, born in Annapolis in 1737, was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, and was the longest-surviving signer. As was the custom for English Catholics, he attended English schools in Belgium and later university in France. By the time he signed the Declaration, he was the richest man in America, and his decision to sign would hardly go unnoticed by the king. Because Carroll was so wealthy and because he was a Catholic, he had more to lose than the others. Those who signed became traitors to the Crown and risked losing everything. It is said that someone grumbled that there were many men in the world named Charles Carroll, and he could dodge responsibility if he had to. For that reason, he added a flair to his signature, of Carrollton, making it clear that he put everything at risk. His cousin John, also an ardent supporter of the American Revolution, was ordained a Jesuit priest and returned to Maryland at the outbreak of hostilities. Upheavals in Europe forced the Jesuit order to dissolve, leaving Carroll a secular priest. Ultimately, it was John Carroll who was asked to organize the Catholic Church in the new nation. No one was better positioned for this task, a cultured man from an esteemed family, a cherished friend of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, and a man so thoroughly attuned to an undercurrent of anti-catholicism in the colonies that he could charm powerful people to a new point of view. It is a feast that reminds us that a true king in the eyes of God is one who serves with humility and great self-sacrifice, always putting the needs of others before his own self interests. There will also be a blessing of food. All are welcome. FYI The Mantua Community Thanksgiving Service tentatively scheduled for November 20 has been cancelled due to scheduling concerns. LOOKING FOR A NEW YEAR S EVE PARTY! The Women s Auxiliary of the Mantua Knights of Columbus Council #3766 is planning to have a New Year s Eve/Reverse Raffle party on Saturday, December 31. If you re looking for a fun time, at a good price, come and join them at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Sentinel Party Center, St. Rt. 44, Mantua, OH Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets, available through Jay D Aurelio ( ), cost $65/couple, $50/single, and include appetizers, raffle, dinner, open bar, DJ, dancing and a midnight champagne toast. All proceeds go towards a new roof for St. Joseph Church. Our annual Advent tradition of the Giving Tree begins next weekend. Coordinated by the Nuti Family, this community outreach provides those in need with a little brighter Christmas (this may be the only gifts they receive). Once again wish lists were obtained from Catholic Charities of Portage County. To participate, please select a tag, shop, and return your wrapped gifts to the Narthex with the tag securely attached and visible by Sunday, December 11.

FIRST COMMUNION PARENTS MEET On Sunday, November 20, First Communion parents will be meeting during PSR. We will be gathering at 9:45 a.m. in Hughes Hall to discuss the Sacrament of Reconciliation and make plans for First Reconciliation in January.

4 CONFIRMATION SPONSORS AND CANDIDATES MEET On Sunday, November 20, Confirmation Candidates and Sponsors will be meeting during PSR. We will be gathering at 9:45 a.m. in the Hughes Hall. This session helps the sponsors and candidates initiate the dialogue about living a life in Christ. Make sure your sponsors are selected by this time! DECEMBER CALENDAR This month s PSR calendar is full of information about Advent and Christmas activities here at St. Joseph Parish. Please be sure that you check your child s copy or pick one up on the table in the school hallway. ADVENT PROCESSION OF LESSONS & CAROLS Saint Columba Cathedral will present its annual Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, November 27, at 7:00 p.m. The service will feature the Cathedral Choir under the direction of Dr. Daniel Laginya, the cathedral lectors coordinated by Mrs. Laura Elder, and students of the parish led by Sister Martha Reed, OSU. The program is based on the ancient traditional O Antiphons and culminated with the Annunciation narrative. The evening will be dedicated to Sister Isabel Rudge in thanksgiving for her many years of pastoral leadership in the cathedral parish. The event is free and open to the public. Security and ample free parking provided. A reception will follow in Saint Columba Hall. RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE St. Joseph Parish will be hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, November 28, 1:00-6:00 p.m., in Hughes Hall. The need is constant the gratification is instant. SIP & SHOP POP-UP BOUTIQUE Catholic Charities will hold its first annual Sip & Shop Pop-Up Boutique on Giving Tuesday (November 29) at St. Columba Hall 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. This event will provide guests with the opportunity to enjoy coffee or a hot beverage in a friendly atmosphere, while getting a jumpstart on their holiday shopping by supporting local artisans and vendors. Some items available for purchase include Fair Trade goods, jewelry, crafts, candy, bath soaps, lip balms, chocolate and local maple products. Our diocese will close the Year of Mercy with the celebration of Solemn Evening Prayer on Sunday, November 20, at 6:00 p.m. at Saint Columba Cathedral. You are cordially invited with others from the parishes of the Diocese for this special event as we bring to a close this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Evening Prayer is open to the public and security will be provided. A WELCOME OPPORTUNITY FOR DIVORCED CATHOLICS Reforms in the Annulment Process were announced by Pope Francis and made effective December 8, 2015, the first day of the Holy Year of Mercy. The coincidence of the two events gives a great hope to Catholics who feel separated from their faith by the circumstances of their marriage. The application and explication of the reforms is still being worked out (the easiest to grasp is the process should be free. ). But, the tone of the Pope s message is clear encouraging to Catholics. Regarding the changes, Bishop Murry said: This reform offers those whose marriages have failed an opportunity to be reunited with the Church. I hope and pray that presently divorced and remarried Catholics will welcome this opportunity to apply for an annulment. In announcing the changes, Pope Francis said: the concern for the salvation of souls remains the supreme objective of the institutions and laws, and drives the Bishop of Rome to offer the Bishops this reform document to protect the unity in faith and in the discipline regarding marriage, the cornerstone and origin of the Christian family charity and mercy require the Church to be closer to her children who consider themselves separated. If your child can not read music that is not a problem. Just show up with a love of singing!
