1 PARISH COUNCIL November 28, 2018 Minutes of the Meeting * submitted by Kathi Trares PRESENT: Cindy Clark, Michelle Ward-Clayton (Bob Zamrzla), Mike Minor, Deacon Gerry Scopilliti, Phyllis Fussaro, Peg Haney, Joe Casalicchio, Annette Carlisle, Bill Hafemeister, Patty Nichols, Kathi Trares ABSENT: Fr. Ed Stafford, Elaine Finnerty, Bill Bash, Karen Schulz Meeting opened at 7:01 p.m. with by prayer led by Cindy Clark. MINISTRY/ORGANIZATION REPORTS & NEWS Finance Council (Karen Schulz absent) Cindy Clark reported that last meeting involved briefly going over accounts. Lottery Raffle Fundraiser has $4, in account; averaging about three winners a week so far. Worship Committee (Michelle Ward-Clayton) All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance was very well received (Kathi was thanked for her providing program). Advent/Christmas plans set with Advent environment being very simple with white candles & colored globes in Advent wreath; 12/16 trees and other decorations will be brought over from Parish Center to church/school building (following 8:30 Mass) with trees being set up but not lighted; 12/23 Christmas environment (after 11:15 Mass). Committee will not meet in January. St. Joseph Cares (Patty Nichols) Substantial funds are available thanks to parishioners generosity; most recently group has helped disabled man into a trailer as a first time home. Free Clothing Giveaway is back again 3 rd Saturday every other month starting Jan., 2019; Clothing Drives taking place weekends prior to bi-monthly events; Ron Scala is working closely with Rev. Chad Delaney of Mantua Center Christian Church to get other area churches on board. STAFF REPORTS Deacon Gerry Scopilliti Fr. Ed is recovering from stomach flu. Fundraising group is doing a good job with successful Lottery Raffle Fundraiser plus other ideas in the works. Parish seems to be upbeat with good things happening. Carpeting project nearly complete. Peg Haney, DRE Religious Education program is doing well with 100 students enrolled this year. Taking course through the Diocese on Youth Ministry; looking towards getting youth more involved in current parish ministries with strong parent involvement; groups as well as parishioners are asked to mentor and bring young people along in their faith by including them in activities; youth program will then hopefully follow. Cindy Clark, Business Office Manager Increased Offertory Program flyer (12/2 bulletin insert) was shared showing 28% increase in offering from 125 families; follow-up letters from diocese will be sent in Feb., Mar. & Aug. Lottery Raffle Fundraiser doing well. Hughes Hall will be stripped and waxed December 6, 7 & 8. Ed absent due to illness) Bill Hafemeister reported that church carpeting project is about 80% done; remainder of carpet to be shipped 11/30 with plans to install following week; music/choir area & sound system arrangements to be addressed by Music Ministry (malfunctioning organ will not be returning to space). OLD BUSINESS Pastoral Planning Process Summary from October, 2017 was reviewed to determine how goals are being met; overall, plans and improvements are on target; future meetings to address promise of periodical communication to parishioners about progress. Family Life Parish Social Life dances well received; hope is to organize family events such as bowling, roller skating, sledding, etc. Discipleship Faith Formation / Catechesis Men of St. Joseph group doing well; Women s Spirituality group currently not meeting but exploring programs already established in area (Bible Study, Retreats, etc.); Laudato Si Study Group met several sessions & recycling efforts increased; future plan to feature a parental catechesis & family enrichment section on parish website close to fruition.
2 Worship & Prayer Rosary devotion is now every Saturday; sound system improvements still on wish list. Christian Service St. Joseph Cares & Appalachian Experience going strong; St. Joseph Parish booth at Ox Roast Fair has larger space (includes St. Joseph Cares & Right to Life info.) Evangelization Peg & Kathi attended diocesan workshop focusing on topic; Q & A fireside chats with Fr. Ed & Deacon still on to do list; forming of Welcoming Committee may be happening soon. Finances Increased Offertory Program and fundraising group helping to fund upcoming projects prioritized by Finance Council and parish staff. Administration Improved financial picture should allow more support for future possibilities. NEW BUSINESS - None Meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. with prayer led by Cindy Clark. 3 St. Joseph Cares Meeting Minutes Tuesday, October 2, :00 PM Present: Angie and Joe Daczko, Jean Wojtecki, Patty Nichols, Ron Scala, Lynn Kelley and Marti Loughney. I. OPENING PRAYER Joe and Patty II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING Motion by Joe to approve the meeting minutes of the September 2018 meeting, motion seconded by Ron, all in favor, motion carries. III. TREASURER S REPORT Reported an ending August balance of $ September Deposits of $767.00, and September Cases $433.45, resulting in a balance of $748.16, at the end of September. Cases for September below. Case Check No. Amount Purpose $ Rent $ First Energy * * $33.45 Reorder checks IV. DISCUSSION The group had discussion on the following topics: Group will sponsor the January 27 th community meal SJC has $400 from online donation coming as well as money from Ox Roast face painting and jewelry sales. Next month will meet at 6:30 to sign cards for Veterans Day. Will give gift cards for active members and cards for retired Veterans. Angie will pick up the gift cards and Jean will pick up the greeting cards. Holiday get together in early December at Daczko s home or other member as decided. Have holiday table at the Christmas boutique if we have something to sell for SJC. Ron reported continued work with Nancy and Rev Delaney to revive the clothing drive. Looking at several options to fix the four fire violations. One option is to use the 3 rd floor instead of the basement. Trustee s meeting on Thursday to discuss further. Book drive for jail has been terminated, was informed that the jail turns books away. Use of electronic books are more popular. SJC is looking at what other ways we can assist in the prison ministry. Portage Project made up of Ohio can and opioid group looking to support those with substance abuse. NA meeting at Rev Delaney s church has been discontinued at this time. V. 4 Worship Committee Meeting October 4, 2018 Worship Committee Meeting Members in attendance: Chuck Casalicchio, Cindy Clark, Michelle and Bob, Marianne Berzinskas, Maryanne Fedor, Jay D Aurelio, Deacon Gerry Scopilliti, Kathy Paroff, Amy Powers. Meeting Called to Order by Chuck Casalicchio for opening prayer at 6:00 p.m. Prayer intentions were shared with members. Planning guide for liturgy handed out to all members. Memorial Courtyard was discussed briefly and additional discussion will occur next meeting. MASS OF REMEMBRANCE: Discussion held to decide how the order of mass will be handled and by whom. Jay brought music that would be used during All Souls Mass. I requested a copy from her when possible. Deacon Gerry has requested an additional meeting to follow up on Mass of Remembrance to be sure we all are on same page. There will be a follow up of possible dates for this meeting. Marianne Berzinskas is handling Book of Remembrance. There will be no First Friday Eucharistic Adoration in November. Advent Themes were discussed. Several were brought up, but the one chosen was Simple and Pure with faith as a child. Advent decoration will be the wreath only. Families will light candles during the Advent season. Chuck informed us he spoke to Father about the Nativity Scene, and was told by Father that it could be put where the organ presently stands. Deacon says eventually the organ will be moved to allow Nativity Stand to be placed once someone is found to move it. Fall colors will be added to ordinary time environment. Discussion has taken place on this and possible ideas were discussed as to what we would use. Next regular meeting scheduled for Thursday November 8, Meeting was brought to a close by prayer and adjourned 7:00 p.m.
5 St. Joseph Cares Meeting Minutes Tuesday, November 6, :00 PM Present: Angie Daczko, Jean Wojtecki, Patty Nichols, Ron Scala, Jan Herman and Jeannine Maczko. I. OPENING PRAYER Jan II. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING Motion by Jan to approve the meeting minutes of the October 2018 meeting, motion seconded by Jean, all in favor, motion carries. TREASURER S REPORT Reported an ending September balance of $ October Deposits of $2,432.30, and October Cases $400.00, resulting in a balance of $2,780.46, at the end of October. Cases for October below. Case Check No. Amount Purpose $ Rent-disabled party, assisted independent living for the first time 1043 na $0.00 Na $ Electric-local resident, no heat in trailer IV. DISCUSSION - The group had discussion on the following topics Jan talked about the Haven of Portage and how she got involved with the Haven through the Center of Hope. They held a Gala event at NeoMed Center to raise money. Ticket fee was $150 per seat. Their goal is to have 9 beds available by the end of November and will be used as a warming center during cold months. The Haven s hopes are to remain free of Government assistance and maintain the local control/decision making. Discussed article on Edwin s Restaurant in Shaker Square. The owner is an ex-convict who hires those recently released from prison to give them a second chance in life, as he was given. Many have gone on to open their own restaurants. He recently bought a building to also provide housing for his employees Jan reported there are 278 foster children that will be turning 18 in 2019, resulting in the termination of support funding. There are currently 235 registered children in the Ravenna School district, with no permanent home address (considered homeless) Met at 6:30 to sign cards for Veterans Day. Gave gift cards for active members and greeting cards for retired Veterans. Lynn is hosting a Holiday get together December 2 nd at her home. All agreed to forego the holiday table at the Christmas boutique since we had nothing ready to sell for SJC, will regroup for next year. Ron reported on Clothing Drive. Will reopen the 3 rd Saturday in January 2019 and continue every other month after. Will be meeting on Monday, November 12 th to clean and prepare the rooms. The original room used will not be utilized until the metal stairway can be repaired providing a means of exit. The rental fee of the rooms is $1000 per year. Looking and contacting surrounding churches to help in this effort and commit to hosting a month to cover the needed volunteers and donations. Also looking to enlist volunteers that need community service hours to help out. Tags not taken from the Giving Tree- Patty will ask Kathi to let us know of any not taken and SJC will take what we can provide for. Angie will contact the Crestwood School and inquire if there is a family in need SJC can host for Christmas. V. 6 WORSHIP COMMITTEE Minutes of the Meeting November 8, 2018 Jay lead meeting for Chuck. Called to order with 6pm Sister started off the meeting with information about the organ and that it has been removed and trying to sell it. Organ was purchased by the parish, Fr. Fata, got in somewhere in Canton, OH. We thanked her for her involvement of the Mass of remember. She will be having a mini retreat with Mary on November 24 for women. She is also starting a cookie gift Vine for folks who may need it. You can get involved by nominating someone who needs them, baking or delivery. The Deacon continued with the Halloween Dance was a success, nearly 200 people attended, Thank you and the book of Remembrance in out for the entire month of November. Mass of Remembrance: everyone had a part in it, should we continue it, all in favor. The carpet is going to be installed starting next week with volunteers to take out pews and rip carpets. Michelle set up food for volunteers.hopefully, it will be done in two weeks. Garden Clubs 34th Annual Christmas Boutique will be Sunday from 9:30-3:30 Nov. 11th. K of C Thanksgiving Dinner is November 18th Thanksgiving Liturgy Nov 22 10:00AM Advent starts Dec. 2 Wreath will be put up by Greg, on Nov 30 will keep it simple decorations and wreath Theme is Simple and Pure with faith like a Child Dec. 7 First Friday Adoration- Advent Music Dec 8 Immaculate Conception - Masses on Friday, at 7 PM and Saturday, Dec 9 at 9 AM Live Nativity Dec 8 and 9, 6-8 PM Christmas Eve 12/24 Monday the discussed plans are meeting after 11:15 Mass Dec. 16th putting up trees into environment and finalizing the environment Dec. 23rd after restoration. Nativity will go where organ was. We will use the tall tree over by the Nativity. There is a rough outline by Jay. Chuck will need to arrange volunteers to bring up decorations on Sunday before so we can get the trees up. We will talk with Jessica about poinsettias. They may be cheaper, look better and we are supporting students. We should have a meeting to finalize decorations strategy on December at Jake s before meeting. As not to discuss this during our meeting. Fr. Ed suggested that we not have meetings every month, every other month will do just as well. Jay reminded the members that we do not meet every month anyway. She also expressed concerns that we are planning liturgies and could use guidance, using part of the budget, and have much work to do. Father said we didn t need so many people on the committee. Jay expressed that during peak times, all members are needed. Father said that we could plan the way we wanted as long as it doesn t go against the church, we can buy what we needed for décor, and we should still meet when we need just doesn t have to be formal. Can meet somewhere to plan and brainstorm ideas. Review and Discussion of P&L o Profit and Loss reports received from Cindy Clark were reviewed and accepted. Pastor s Report o Father Stafford had nothing to report. Old Business o We have not received the updated pricing from Joe Bica and will have discussion concerning that project when we do. New Business o No new business. Adjournment o Meeting adjourned at 7:45 P.M. The next meeting will be on January 10, 7 PM.
