2 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This is the height of vacation season, but as anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-airconditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given "extraterritorial rights," meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There's still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don't have a personal castle in the hills! Rev. Worrying about what you will eat each day and how you will pay the heating bill or the rent is a great hardship. Yet in the Psalm we are assured, "When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and those who are crushed in spirit he saves." In these times, we can be disheartened when we see those among the rich and powerful who constantly try to get richer while cynically depriving the poor of the very necessities of life. But "the LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the earth." This refers to those who, as in our own time, walk away from Jesus in disbelief because they can't understand what is of the Spirit and not of the flesh. They can only understand the things of the flesh; they care only for their own flesh and not that of those whom they should love and care for as part of the Body of Christ. There are Catholics who innocently believe that our Eucharist is only symbolic of the Body and Blood of Christ. Yet Jesus did not command us to eat this symbol of his body and blood.

Referring to another future action which would be hard to believe, Jesus says, "What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?

3 SPIRIT AND LIFE "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Those who had been following Jesus found the teaching about eating his flesh and drinking his blood, words that we heard in last Sunday's Gospel, puzzling and unbelievable. There are Catholics who innocently believe that our Eucharist is only symbolic of the Body and Blood of Christ. Yet Jesus did not command us to eat this symbol of his body and blood. He said, "This is my body" and "This is my blood." "Does this shock you?" In fact, it did seem to shock many of his followers, the disciples no less than anyone else. Referring to another future action which would be hard to believe, Jesus says, "What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?" Nothing more is said about the Ascension at this time, but he is teaching them gradually how to accept something that seems unbelievable. LIGHTING A CANDLE When you enter St. Joseph Church, you ll see small side altars with statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of Saint Joseph and rows of votive candles. The word votive comes from the Latin votum meaning vow, and these candles are, when lit, used to symbolize our prayers, vows of prayer, or simply our honoring God or one of His Saints. They are lit outside of Mass (before or after, or during simple visits to a church) usually for a specific intention. It s a very Catholic thing to say to someone that you will light a candle for them, meaning that you will pray for them and ritually symbolize those prayers by the lighting of votives. We light the candle while praying for our intention or offering our thanks and then leave the flame burning as signs of our prayers. The Catholic custom of lighting candles is rooted in Church teaching that Christ is the Light of the World. Candles serve as an outward sign of the light of faith burning in our hearts. You will see blue envelopes for donations to help offset the cost for the candles (simply leave near the altar or drop in the collection basket). PRAYER TO BEGIN A SCHOOL YEAR God of wisdom and might, we praise you for the wonder of our being, for mind, body and spirit. Be with our children as they begin a new school year. Bless them and their teachers and staff. Give the strength and grace as their bodies grow; wisdom and knowledge to their minds as they search for understanding; and peace and zeal to their hearts. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. MEETINGS AND EVENT PLANNING The Parish Community of St. Joseph is a very busy place with dozens of groups using the facilities year round. Please check with the Parish Office to confirm a date whenever you are planning a meeting, event, fundraiser, etc. Please don t assume that a space or date is available before you check the master calendar through the Parish Office staff (ktrares@stjosephmantua.com or ). They should always know what is going on throughout the buildings and on the grounds not only for organizational purposes but also for safety and security concerns. We also take pride in accurately publicizing the many activities in the bulletin and on the parish website and Facebook pages. We appreciate your assistance in help to keep the parish running smoothly. K OF C PIG ROAST Mantua Knights of Columbus #3766 is having a Pig Roast on Saturday, September 22, at the Sentinel Party Center, St. Rt. 44, Mantua, 4:00-8:00 p.m. Donation is $25.00 per person and includes dinner and an open bar. A corn hole tournament will be available for a $10.00 entrance fee. This event raised $ for Hattie Larlham last year with hopes of doing as well or better this year. NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE Every day, more than 3,000 children are killed in our country through abortion, and most of their bodies are discarded with medical waste. All produce left after the last Mass on Sundays will be taken to our local 4C s food cupboard, the Crestwood Coalition for Community Care. CATHOLIC CHARITIES CORNER Catholic Charities Serving Portage and Stark Counties operates Caritas Café at its Ravenna location. The Café provides free, light refreshments (i.e. coffee, cold drinks, donuts, oatmeal, fresh fruit) in a casual, informal atmosphere. Although the primary focus is on low income and homeless individuals, all are welcome to the Café. Food, conversation, and socialization are available every weekday morning, 9:00-11:30 a.m. More volunteers are needed.
