One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home.

Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland.

One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to "the Isle of the Blessed" in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leatherbound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. That is what Christ the Teacher will always try to show us. I am grateful that our Deacon Gerry was able to locate and secure for us a beautiful crucifix over our altar. I often gaze upon it and I am inspired by the true message it can offer. At first glance it may seem like a symbol of horrendous suffering, but in truth it is a powerful message of God s tremendous love for all of us. I think about the verse in the song sung by Vanessa Williams back in the 80 s or 90 s. Love Is, in a duet with Brian McNight; Love takes no less then everything. Fr. APPALACHIAN EXPERIENCE BAKE SALE Next weekend, October 20/21, the Appalachian Experience group will hold a bake sale to raise funds for their trip to McClure, VA, June 8-15, 2019, to participate in the Binns-Counts Community Center s Housing Repair Program. All bakers, our faithful bakers and anyone who would like to begin baking, may drop off their baked goods in the Narthex before the Mass they attend. Thank you! BOOK OF LIFE Throughout the month of October our Book of Life is available in the Narthex for you to add the names of loved ones who have passed away. All deceased of the parish and our families will be remembered throughout the month of November at our celebrations. ALL SOULS DAY On Friday, November 2, the parish will hold a special remembrance for all deceased parishioners and their family members at the 7:00 p.m. Mass. All are welcome to attend this Mass. This is a Holy Day of Obligation on which we celebrate the Church Triumphant all the Saints in Heaven, canonized or unknown. Let us rejoice in all the men and women, blest in the eyes of the Lord, who celebrate the heavenly liturgy. If your child hasn t already picked up a baby bottle for the collection, you can still do so in the PSR office. The filled baby bottles are due back at St. Joseph s on Sunday, October 28. 4th GR. CRS EMERGENCY RESPONSE TYPHOON MANGKHUT On September 15, Typhoon Mangkhut, made landfall o n t h e Philippine island of Luzon with sustained winds of 125 miles per hour and gusts in excess of 155 miles per hour. Over 250,000 people were directly affected by the storm, with more than 150,000 temporarily displaced. CRS is working with local partners and Caritas Philippines to provide emergency assistance. CRS staff are on the ground in the most severely impacted provinces in North Luzon. CRS has allocated an initial $50,000 for this emergency, and staff will conduct a market assessment to determine the most effective response in collaboration with local partners. Please make donations to Catholic Charities and on the memo line write Typhoon Mangkhut. Send the donation to Catholic Charities, 144 W. MINISTRIES & ORGANIZATIONS Men of St. Joseph This group for men of the parish was formed as a follow-up to the Speaker's Series, "Discover God: Turn On The Light", particularly the men's evening with Fr. Robert Kraig. The Men of St. Joseph group is currently meeting on every Wednesday at 7:00 pm. They begin in the church and then move to their meeting room (Rm. #9 - upstairs classroom converted to a meeting space). All men in the parish are welcome. Questions??? This follows the Ohio 3-Digit Lottery based on the evening drawing only. Tickets will go on sale beginning October 6/7 with only 1,000 tickets sold numbered #000 - #999. Tickets are good for the entire month. The raffle will begin in November with winning tickets being worth $50.00 (payouts mailed weekly).
