Baptism class is held the third Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. This can be done at least seven (7) months before the birth in order to make proper sacramental preparations. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Diocesan policy requires a minimum of six (6) months of sacramental preparations for marriage. Engaged couples are invited to call the Pastor for an appointment. HOLY COMMUNION OR ANOINTING OF THE SICK Please call the Pastor if you or any family members are ill or plan to be hospitalized to arrange the reception of the Sacraments. 2 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 11, 2018.THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the Great War ) on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or chapel, the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as Saint Martin s Lent or Martinmas, that later developed into the season of Advent. Rev. 4 The Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has asked for a novena of Masses to be offered in reparation for sins committed by clergy following new revelations of sexual abuse, and for the healing of victims. Knights of Columbus will help renew our Church on a national level through a Novena of Masses in reparation for these sins that have so grievously wounded the Body of Christ, he wrote. I take this opportunity to ask that you offer this Novena of Masses for our Church at your earliest opportunity. -Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight. Joined with the Mass intention for the People of the Parish, we will include praying in reparation of sins that have wounded the Body of Christ beginning this weekend for 9 weekends to complete the Novena. Orange Christian Services Christmas Food Bags and Christmas Toys OCS is issuing a plea for help. Please consider a monetary donation to help a family have a better Christmas. Orange Christian Services can obtain many of these food items from the SE TX Food Bank at.16 per pound so monetary donations will help the most. $25 will include a turkey and all the fixings. Last year, OCS helped 519 families. We will have a second collection for Orange Christian Services this weekend. Christmas tags will be coming soon. The gifts will be due December 15/16. The Knights of Columbus will have their annual KC banquet on Thursday, December 6th. A mass to honor our deceased members will be held at 6:00 pm with a dinner to start at 7:00 pm. Brother Knights, please plan to bring your family to enjoy dinner and fellowship. Servants of Church and Country Each year on November 11, we observe Veterans Day and remember all those who have served our country in times of war. Among those veterans are our military chaplains. Five military chaplains, all of them Catholics, have received the Medal of Honor since the Civil War. Two of them are on the path to sainthood as their stories of bravery have touched people the world over. Their example inspires a new generation of men to be chaplains as well. Four Catholic military chaplains have also been recognized for bravery in the line of duty with United States Navy ships named in their honor. Father Emil Kapuan, who served as a U.S. Army chaplain during the Korean War, celebrates Mass in the field. Fr. Kapuan later died in a Korean P.O.W. camp and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery there

Anyone in the 3rd grade or higher may participate. Ushers-be a greeter to all who walk in the doors of St. Francis, help with the collections, and assist in leading out the pews for Holy Communion. Choir-Come share your musical talents! When you sing, you pray twice. Who doesn t need double prayers. Religious Education volunteers-sign up to volunteer with the youth to share your Faith with the future of our Catholic Church. Knights of Columbus-a fraternal organization open to men 18 and older who are committed to making their community a better place, while supporting their church. This collection supports programs to empower people to identify and address the obstacles they face as they work to bring permanent and positive change to their communities.
