1 The Parish of Wellow Wellow Church and Parish News November 2015 Daring to trust' by the Rector Matthew Street based on Acts 9:10-14 'There was a certain disciple in Damascus by the name of Ananias, and the Lord spoke to him in a vision, saying, 'Ananias.' He answered, 'I'm here, Lord.' The Lord said to him, 'Get up and go to the street known as The Straight, and there look in the house of Judas for a man called Saul of Tarsus. He is praying at this very moment, and in a vision he has seen a man called Ananias enter and lay hands on him so that he might recover his sight. But Ananias protested, 'Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, about all his cruelty to your saints in Jerusalem, and how he has come here now with authority from the chief priests to arrest all those who confess your name. ' (Acts 9:10-14) What would you do if you sensed danger looming? The answer is obvious: you'd do everything possible to avoid it. Should you be the adventurous type, it's possible that you might flirt with it for a moment but, if you felt your life was on the line, you'd ultimately want to ensure your own safety. That, no doubt, was paramount in the mind of Ananias, having heard that Saul, persecutor of the Church, was in town. Quite simply, he was keeping his head down until the danger had passed, hoping against hope that he would not hear the fateful knock on the door summoning him to imprisonment and almost certain death. Imagine his surprise, then, when another summons came, calling him to seek out this man who struck fear into the heart of every Christian, and to knock on his door! It was asking a lot, to say the least! Would you have obeyed that call, or would you have made excuses to evade it, dismissed it as ridiculous, looked the other way? Had Ananias done any of those, who can say how different the history of the Christian Church might have been? It took his faith and courage to finish the transformation of Saul, enemy of the faith, into Paul, its greatest ambassador. When God asks you to step out in faith, will you have the courage, like Ananias, to say yes? Visit the Church Website:

4 FRIENDS OF ST. JULIAN S The Last Night of the Proms concert held at St Julian's Church was tremendous fun and thank you to all those who supported this event and came dressed in their finest patriotic attire. Our thanks also go to The Cameo Orchestra, who were magnificent and also to Bath Audi, who kindly sponsored this event. The evening raised 611 for the Friends of St Julian's Church and was yet another example of how our village church can be enjoyed as a venue other than as a place of worship. Would you like to become a Friend of St Julian's? Any help, no matter how big or small, is greatly appreciated. Whether it's your time, a particular skill, or a monetary donation, it all helps to keep St Julian's alive. Please take a look at our website for details, Annabel Chapman DATE FOR YOUR DIARY Remember Saturday 14 th November, Christmas Bazaar in the Church. Come for a super homemade soup Lunch. 5 WELLOW PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council met on 6 th October in Wellow Village Hall. Defibrillator Because the phone box is a listed building, the Parish Council will have to obtain consent before it can attach the defibrillator to it. In the meantime the defibrillator will be sited outside the Village Hall Dog mess This problem persists. PLEASE put your dog s excrement in a plastic bag and dispose of it properly. This is currently not happening at the Playing Field and other locations around Wellow. The Parish Council is still keeping under review the need to ask for all dogs to be kept on the lead at the Playing Field. B&NES will provide a larger bin at The Batch. The Parish Council has also asked for a new bin opposite the School. Village Hall gates The Village Hall committee is keeping the main drive gates locked when the hall is not in use, to discourage unwanted cars. Remember to dial 101 if you see anyone taking drugs in the area. Planning On 6 th October Councillors recommended support for the following applications: FUL Brook Lodge Bull's Hill, Wellow. Erection of detached double garage and greenhouse FUL Upper Twinhoe Farm Upper Twinhoe, Wellow. Change of use of agricultural land to horse gallop. The following planning decisions were noted: Conversion of The Old Works Railway Lane Wellow: permit External repairs and replacements to Church Farm House (listed building): consent Erection of barn at Upper Twinhoe Farm Upper Twinhoe Wellow Bath: permit Replacement of windows and new porch at Canteen Cottage, Canteen Lane (listed building): consent Enforcement Councillors agreed to ask B&NES for a more comprehensive response than had been received to date to their concerns about logging activities at Little Horse Croft Farm. Fly tipping Please notify the Clerk if you spot fly tipping in the Parish. If you can take a picture, so much the better. You can also call Council Connect on Highways Councillors are preparing a brief for a site visit by B&NES to see what new traffic calming measures might be put in place.
6 Finance Councillors approved grants to Wellow Parlour Shop, Wellow Community Bus Group and the Wellow and Shoscombe Joint Burial Board. They also agreed payments for the annual audit, domain name renewal and defibrillator batteries, as well as for the usual staff costs. CIO Hugh Prentice updated the council on the charitable body (CIO) which it has been agreed will have day-to-day management of the Playing Field now that the new sports facilities have been installed. After public consultation, some amendments to the constitution had been made and the application was about to be sent to the Charity Commission. It was hoped the CIO would be approved by the end of October. In the meantime a working group of CIO trustees and council members would consider the way of working and funding requirements. Next meeting The Parish Council will next meet at 7:30pm on Tuesday 3 rd November in Wellow Village Hall. All are welcome. Items for agenda consideration should reach the Clerk by 27 th October. Minutes For full minutes of Parish Council meetings please see the parish website or parish notice board in Wellow Square, or contact clerk@wellowparish.info Robin Campbell (Parish Clerk) ST. JULIAN S CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS The school s High Five netball team have made it through to the county finals. This is a netball game made up of five players which is really suitable for smaller schools which may not have enough members for a full netball team. We also entered a team for a cross country event as a start to our new academic sport year. As our first charity event of this academic year we celebrated Harvest and donated over 20 carrier bags of tinned and packaged produce to the Somer Valley Foodbank Appeal. Annie Scotland and Amy Lloyd Jones worked with the younger children on the theme of the hungry men. With the superb puppets made by Annie the children decorated clothes and made plasticene plates of food for the hungry men. Annie and Amy started their workshop with a short puppet show to introduce the theme of harvest. Many thanks to them both for a fun, creative and very entertaining day. We also have a new monthly afterschool club called Messy Church School. This is run on the lines of Messy Church and is open to families. We had 26 children ranging from a few months old to Year 5 with their parents and carers attend last week. Messy Church is a way of being church, for families, based around hospitality, creativity and celebration. It began in 2004 in the UK and encourages families to get to know Jesus through his teachings in a fun, safe and non-judgemental environment. Many thanks to Pauline Preddy and her team who come to help each month. Sue Rodford (Assistant headteacher)
7 PARLOUR SHOP We ve done it, the shop has landed in the 21 st Century of technology. Toot toot!!! Following the very generous long term loan of an ipad from Maria and Chris Watts and some loooong hours from Greg Ayres and Hugh Prentice, volunteers are now learning to use our new EPOS till system. It gives us much greater visibility of what we stock, sell and make financially. Over the next few months we ll use this insight to further guide the stock choices we make. But for now, a quick round-up of a few tasty new local items to tempt you Jersey delicious Ivy House Dairy is a family-run Beckington farm, with around 120 Jersey cows. They produce a range of flavour-filled organic Jersey milks, creams, butter and buttermilk. They grow all their own feed for the winter, breed their our own calves and produce, package and deliver all their own products. With the plight of dairy farmers so much in the news, and the community asking us to bring in more local produce, we are delighted to support Ivy House. So pop in for a few items to try you ll really notice the difference and it s all available to order. Award-winning Wyke As well as Jersey dairy from Ivy House, Wyke Farm in Somerset supply us with rich creamy butter and some really good mild and mature cheddars. Stock up for kids sandwiches or a cheeky cheese on toast. If you want to make it a bit posh, add a dash of Worcestershire Sauce, also available in-store in the cook section. An egg a day We stock fresh Castlemead eggs from the farm that gave the world pampered poultry. Lovely poached, scrambled or (on special occasions) fried! And of course, breakfast bacon from local pigs can be found in the fridge or pre-ordered with your Saturday paper and loaf. Fancy a Stoney Bonk? Midford s Honey & Daughter cider has been a big hit and it really doesn t get more local. Drop in to choose from a range of ciders and ginger beers, including their most cheekily titled tipple, all made from West Country apple varieties. If you re not a cider lover, we have plenty of Bath Ales and (slightly less local) lagers instead! Halloween pumpkins have just arrived and we have plenty of sweet treats for your trick or treating supplies. With Christmas now a little closer, we ll soon send out details of how to order your meat, veg, bakery treats and dairy. See you soon Wellow Parlour Shop (Donate just a tenner and Local Giving will make it 20)
