1 The Parish of Wellow Wellow Church and Parish News April 2018 Truth will out! by the Rector Matthew Street, based on Matthew 28:11-15 Some of the guards went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had happened. After the priests had assembled with the elders, they devised a plan to give a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, You must say, His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep. If this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble. So, they took the money and did as they were directed. (Matthew 28:11-15) Truth will out, we are told, and so it repeatedly proves. There may be occasions when deceit goes unnoticed, but falsehood has an uncanny habit of being exposed; of weaving a web that finally traps the very one who spins it. We may suppress the truth, we may twist and distort it, but it is hard to keep it hidden for ever, as the death and resurrection of Christ make crystal clear. His enemies stopped at nothing to get their man, cynically employing false witnesses to secure the verdict they were looking for. Similarly, when they heard news of the empty tomb, they turned once again to deceit, slipping a backhander to the guards in a desperate bid to hush up events. They did all they could to stifle the truth, but it was no good, for first one person, then another, then another still, and so on in perpetuity, met with the risen Lord and knew the truth for themselves. There is here both challenge and promise. On the one hand, there is a warning that deception will be uncovered however hard we try to conceal it; that all things will finally come to light. On the other hand, there is assurance that right will triumph; that God's purpose will prevail. So we put our trust in Christ - the way, the truth and the life knowing that his love is sure and his mercy dependable, now and always. Visit the Church Website:

5 WELLOW PARISH COUNCIL 11 members of the public attended the 19 th February meeting. Budget Councillors finalised details of the balanced budget. Wellow Community Bus and Wellow Village Hall will receive a lower grant than requested in 2018/19 only. The Parlour shop grant is maintained. Replacement of the Playing Field fence will be done over two years. A contribution to the cost of repairing the church clock is being sought. At the April meeting there will be a review of the principles on which the parish council makes grants to parish organisations. Planning An application for a single storey rear kitchen extension at Baggridge Farm was supported. The following decisions by B&NES on properties in Wellow were noted: felling of a conifer and removal of overhanging limbs at the Manor House, High Street; refusal to discharge conditions at Vera House (an arboricultural survey is needed); refusal of detached carport at Church House, High Street (a revised application will be considered in April); removal of red cedar at Elmlea, Railway Lane. Sports Pavilion At the time of writing, despite the weather the groundworks have been done and concrete pads laid ready for the erection of the pavilion. Costs have risen considerably because of alterations to the disabled access required by building control. Some of the hoped-for internal features may have to be delayed or done without, though additional donations are kindly being made. Wellow Car Park The Parish Council will tell B&NES that it is not in a position to take on a full repairing lease of the car park. Footpath B&NES s proposal to divert sections of Public Footpaths BA25/13 and BA25/14 at Weavers Farm Lodge was noted. Bee hotel There was agreement to place a bee hotel (for solitary, non-stinging bees) in the play park Next meeting Monday 16 April, 8:00pm in Wellow Village Hall. All welcome. Items for agenda consideration to the Clerk one week in advance, please. Robin Campbell clerk@wellowparish.info

6 WELLOW AND DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY I am writing this as the temperature outside is minus 1 degree C and snow is forecast. So much for spring! Cold spring temperatures make a gardeners life difficult as it is not warm enough for seed sowing except with heat and tender new growth can easily get scorched by the cold winds. Life is hard for bees and other pollinators as well and I have found a couple of bumble bees which seem to have succumbed to the cold. Last year a late frost destroyed my apple crop, presumably because of damage to the flowers at a crucial stage. You may see a swarm of honey bees in the spring, April to July, and they are looking for a new home. The way they go about this is fascinating, come on the bee walk on 3rd June to find out more. If you see a swarm, or would like a hive in your garden contact Hugh on Hopefully those who took up our free seed offer will have onions and snap dragons starting into growth. It is also time to think about growing things for the annual plant sale on 12 th May. As soon as this cold snap is over get sowing. Some plants take longer to reach a suitable stage than others. Cosmos, for instance, will make a plant about 10cms tall and ready to plant out after the plant sale if sown at the beginning of April; runner beans and sun flowers would need to be planted about mid April for a similar result. Obviously, this depends a little on temperature and conditions, but this is a rough guide. Grow some extra plants for the bees and pollinators this year and set up a Nectar Cafe in your garden. We will be putting info about this on our website after the bee and pollinator evening on the 21 st March. Happy growing, Bridget and the Committee THANK YOU Thank you so much to everyone who has so generously given money to Macmillian following our Big Shave. Josephine's one of my really good friends at school; her Mum was diagnosed with Cancer in October. We decided to do something positive and shaved our heads on the 23 rd of February in aid of Macmillan. Our aim was to raise 1000, but to date we have raised This is just to say a Huge Thank You to everyone who has visited our giving page and kindly donated or put money through our letter box, or given my Mum and Dad money for us. THANK YOU. Love from Ashling XX
