1 The Parish of Wellow Wellow Church and Parish News October 2017 Shedding light' by Matthew Street, The Vicar, based on Matthew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16) There is something reassuring about light, isn t there? I remember as a child how I always wanted a light left on when I went to bed and how scared I was of the dark; and my own daughter, in turn, also liked to have a night-light left on throughout the hours of darkness. No wonder, then, that light is a symbol shared by almost every religion and by many movements and organisations that profess no faith at all. Within the Christian faith, there are few more enduring or better loved images than that of Jesus coming as the 'Light of the World'. The picture Jesus paints here, however, is rather different, and one that comes as something of a shock, for it stands the image on its head. You are the light of the world, he tells us, and suddenly, as well as receiving light we are those called to illuminate the lives of others. It reminds us that faith involves give as well as take, responsibility as well as privilege, service as well as reward. It s not all down to us, of course - it is ultimately the light of Christ that must shine through us - but if we think we can have one without the other, then it is time to ask some searching questions of our faith, for we may just find that we ve taken a step back into the darkness. 3 CHURCH NEWS Services 8 th October is our Mission Sunday service (10am) when there will be speakers telling us about the charities we are supporting this year. These will include the Carers Centre, the Woodwork Projects and the Filling Station. Do join us. On 22 nd October there will be a joint service for all the St J s group at 10:30 at Foxcote. There will be NO SERVICE in St Julian s Church that day. Please note that our Carol Service is on the 17 th December at 6:30pm. Mobile Phone Antenna Many of you will be aware of the proposed plan to put an antenna in our Church tower. This was expected to improve O2 and Vodaphone reception in the village and to produce a regular income to the church. Despite excellent submissions and support from the PC and the PCC, very sadly the company has withdrawn due to the difficulties in obtaining planning permission and the lengthy delays involved which meant they could not meet their target schedule. Historic England expressed objections which hasn't helped. It is very disappointing. Colin Tremellen THANK YOU Thank you everyone who made cakes for the flower show teas, we are very grateful and would be lost without your contributions. We took just over 400 and decided to give it to the Village Hall towards the new heating, we hope you all approve. We were also very grateful for all the help we received setting up, serving, washing up and most of all clearing up afterwards. Thank you everyone. Pam, Lyn and Lea. LUNCH CLUB Our October lunch is on Thursday 26 th at 1pm in the Village Hall. As usual, please let one of the cooks know as soon as possible if you are unable to be there. Many thanks, Janet Martin (835254) POP IN The October POP INN will be on MONDAY 2 nd October at the usual watering hole of the F&B. From Noon 2.pm. Please come along and join us for an hour or two in pleasant company. Have a drink and a light lunch along with enjoyable conversation. There will be a free raffle. Hope to see you there all will be made welcome Shirley

4 WELLOW PARISH COUNCIL Planning Councillors supported tree work at The Maltings, Mill Hill and at 2 The Batch, a single storey extension at Greenhayes, High Street and a manège at Norton Lane Farm as long as it was not for commercial use. They noted the following B&NES planning approvals: tree works at Vera House, Railway Lane; conversion of cow byres into a small dwelling at Wellow Farm; two storey side extension at Baggridge House; extensions at Leeson s Cottage, Twinhoe; and new windows at The Granary, Baggridge Hill (application for summerhouse withdrawn). It was agreed to write to B&NES expressing regret at the failure to approve, leading to withdrawal of the application for phone antennas at St Julian s church; suggesting that Historic England s opinion of the age of the louvres was incorrect; and pointing to the Diocese of Norwich s enlightened approach to siting communications masts in listed churches. Playing Field drainage The work had not started that day because of late running of the contractor s previous project due to the weather. It was hoped to start the following week. Potholes, white lines and signs A meeting with the Highways Inspector was held the day after the meeting when maintenance and minor repairs and replacements were agreed Wellow Recreation A service level agreement for Wellow Recreation to manage the Playing Field on behalf of the parish council has been concluded. Wellow Car Park The track surface has been repaired to a better standard than of late; the council is pausing its complaint to B&NES while it sees if maintenance is continued as agreed at a site meeting. Bench near Church The council is grateful to Geoff White for installing the new bench and to those who contributed to its cost. Fence Three quotations for new fencing at the west side of the Playing Field were received. It is likely the work will be held until next financial year. Lyn Doman kindly offered to stake gaps in the fence in the meantime. The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Monday 16 th October at 8:00pm. All welcome Robin Campbell clerk@wellowparish.info

5 WELLOW & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Flower Show We were very lucky with the weather this year for the flower show, which somewhat makes up for last year's downpour and we have had a lot of positive comments from the many people who came. If you were one of the many who helped with the huge amount of work it took, thank you very much. I am pleased to say our total entries were up this year, 676 as opposed to 498 in An increase of 35%. This is excellent as it goes against the trend of steadily decreasing entries in shows of this type, so well done everyone who entered. The winners of the main awards were: Sue Rodford cup: Emilia Cross; St. Julian's Cup: Nora Kotchie, Tilly Burton and Tacita Burton (jointly) Combe Hay Cup: Heather Voutt Sarah Moore Trophy: Sally Stillman Joan Rittner Cup: Jodie Davies Ken Mannings Shield: Hugh Prentice and Jill Lambert Ted Welch Memorial Cup: Katie Millar Farmers Cup: Janet Plater Wellow Newcomer: Ian Harris Patrick Harvey Salver: Hugh Prentice and Jill Lambert Banksian Medal: Clover Holland Well done to you all. Apple Day The next event we are preparing for is the Apple Day on Saturday October 14 th from 2 to 4.30 at the village hall, Wellow. Last year's was a lovely affair with apples being chopped and crushed and happy people taking home bottles of apple juice. This year will be run on a similar basis so bring your apples to juice and empty bottles to take your juice home. This year the late frost hit my apple tree when in full bloom and I therefore have very little fruit this year. If this applies to you as well please still come along and help chop and press the apples from the community orchard. The presses have been organised and we are looking forward to getting chopping. There will be apple cake to sample and locally produced cider available for donation. Please note this year the venue is the village hall, not the car park. As well as your apples and empty bottles if you can bring a knife and a chopping board that would be helpful. All are welcome. Look forward to seeing you there!
