1 The Parish of Wellow Wellow Church and Parish News May 2014 The key to contentment' by Matthew Street, the Vicar, based on Proverbs 23:4-5; 28:22 and Ecclesiastes 5:10 'Do not exhaust yourself in an effort to get rich; be sensible enough to avoid that trap, for though you see it one minute, it will be gone the next; suddenly taking wings to itself and flying off into the sky like an eagle. The miser rushes to get rich, apparently ignorant of the fact that loss is sure to come. Whoever loves money will not be content with money; nor the one who loves wealth, with gain. Proverbs 23:4-5; 28:22 and Ecclesiastes 5:10 In 1957 the then Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, informed the British public, 'Most of our people have never had it so good.' Over half a century later, we in the Western world have it better still in terms of material possessions. We live today in a country more prosperous than it has ever been; a society that enjoys a standard of living that our forebears could only have dreamt of just a few decades ago. So, are we correspondingly happier than those who lived before us, more content and fulfilled than previous generations? Paradoxically, the answer is no. If anything, the opposite is true, a deep sense of emptiness pervades the lives of many. All this is, of course, is not to deny that possessions can bring pleasure, nor that they make life easier in a variety of ways, but they can never meet our deepest needs. It remains true that you cannot buy happiness. To discover that, we need to look deeper: we need to nurture our soul rather than our body, to unearth treasure that will last when all else has faded away. It is treasure such as this that Jesus promised to those who follow him. Visit the Church Website:

3 CHURCH NEWS GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES Spring Cleaning A big thank you to the wonderful people who came and scrubbed, cleaned, dug and delved to such fine effect. Our church looks really great. Lots of chat and a big breakfast oiled the wheels. Launch of the Friends of St. Julian's Church Some 70 members of the village came to hear what the Friends are all about, viewed some wonderful photographic displays by Jane Rees and Rod Humphris and enjoyed the village choir's inspiring singing under the leadership of James Watts. Alex Martin, Chair of the Friends explained the background, and the plans for the future, he invited people to become members, and there was a very positive response. The sangria, delicious canapés and the beautiful evening sunshine pouring in through the West window all went to make this a memorable evening. Easter Service Our Easter Communion was celebrated by over 90 people this year while twenty children built an Easter garden with Katy and Sally in the warm vestry during the service. Joyce Manning said she had seldom seen such a good turnout. Jo Vening took the service and Matthew preached. The many wonderful flower arrangements exceeded even Wellow's standards - they looked glorious, thank you. If you know that you will not be able to join us please contact Lee on or Janet on We know that there are many trips and visits happening during this month and to have the correct numbers of diners is a big help to us when it comes to ordering supplies, thanks. 4 NEWS OF WELLOW PARISH COUNCIL'S SPORT ENGLAND GRANT AWARD Announcing first successful grant award for playing field. The award announced in April, is for 50,000 and comes from Sport England s Inspired Facilities Fund. The award will go towards the costs of creating two sensitively lit, all-weather tennis courts incorporating markings for at least one full size netball court. Club Chairman, Andy Smith, said: We are delighted to have secured this substantial award from Sport England. It is extremely important to the success of the project and a wonderful result for the team of residents who have volunteered their time to raise these funds. They have put in a huge effort on behalf of the parish to help make these facilities a reality for the community. Parish Council Chairman, Hugh Prentice, said: We are very grateful to receive this investment by Sport England, which will greatly improve the sports facilities in the parish, and make more sports available to the whole community" Jacob Rees-Mogg, our MP writes, "I am delighted to learn that Wellow Parish Council has been awarded a 50,000 grant from Sport England's Inspired Facilities fund. It will give local children and adults not only the opportunity to practise sports but also to hone existing skills and it will encourage fitness across the wider community. In addition, the fact that the money is being given to a rural project is especially welcome." Confirmation of further awards, which will give us enough to fund the entire project, will come as soon as we can release the information to you. The committee reports they have had very positive feedback to the proposals from various grant bodies and are encouraged by the repeated requests for detailed supplementary information about the project and our village. Wellow's previous successes haven't gone unnoticed. The Parlour Shop, Community Bus, Friends of St. Julian's Church, Annual Horticultural Show, just to name a few, are a credit to an enterprising community with a track record of getting behind projects that enrich village life and contribute towards a dynamic and supportive environment for people to live. While the grant awards trickle in, our calendar of fundraising events will continue throughout the spring and summer. Your further support is greatly appreciated. 5 THE SHOP MOVES FORWARD The first big step into this century was made last year when the Parlour Shop was transformed into the light and airy place it now is, with its new shelves holding so many new and attractive lines. Now the technology is coming in. We now take credit and debit cards, and hope customers old and new will find this really helpful. Broadband has arrived but not yet a laptop to go with it. If anyone has one that still works but that they no longer want we should really appreciate it at the shop. Increasingly orders to suppliers have to be placed online - and, who knows, we might soon be taking orders online too. All offers of help gratefully received! And thank you for the great support that you have already given. The Shop Committee WELLOW HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Plant Sale Have their Annual Plant sale on Saturday 10 th May in the Village Hall.
