2 Francis, Francis and Tom October 4 th is the Feast of Francis of Assisi; Pope Francis just finished his visit to the U.S.; and this year we celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Merton. Pope Francis mentioned Merton in his address to Congress last week as a model for the contemplative life. What is it that these three disciples of Christ have in common? What gospel message do their lives proclaim? This time of year we remember and celebrate the lives of saints sisters and brothers that have gone before us walking the path of discipleship. This week we celebrate the life of our dear friend Francis of Assisi - a saint loved and followed by many throughout history and still throughout the world today. Living the Gospel at all times and in all ways possible was central to Francis life. He took the message of the gospel seriously. He once said, Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words, - reminding us that our faith is not a set of rules or ideas. It is a way of life. The other Francis, that has become so well known is, of course, the Holy Father, who chose the name Francis to walk more closely in the footsteps of the holy man of Assisi and care for the poor and marginalized. During his visit to the U.S., as wonderful as the words of Francis were, we could experience what he was talking about when he reached out to the disabled, embraced little children and visited our sisters and brothers in prison. He told us of the goodness and love of God and he also showed us ways to live out of that goodness and love. We must move forward together, as one, in a renewed spirit of fraternity and solidarity, cooperating generously for the common good. -Pope Francis And, as a friend of mine calls him, Tom Merton - Pope Francis called attention to the life of Tom Merton, a modern day prophet who lived the contemplative way of life and invited us all to learn and nurture the contemplative mind and heart. From the heart of his contemplation, Merton gave us wonderful insights into social justice, the evils of war and the inherent value and dignity of being human. We are already one. But we imagine that we are not. And what we have to recover is our original unity. What we have to be is what we are. -Thomas Merton And now the question for us is what gospel message do we proclaim with our lives? ~ Jane Clare
