2 Central Point of the Year of Grace: THE EASTER TRIDUUM Let us recall the year s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial and his rising. This is the church community s defining time as we enter into the Lord s saving mysteries from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. Within these days, none outshines the Easter Vigil. It is the Feast of Feasts. The centerpiece moment of the central point of the Year of Grace. From these days all others are reckoned and none are more important. Participating in these liturgies is the means for our renewal and reconstitution as disciples. Weekly Celebration of Easter: THE LORD S DAY On each Sunday as on Easter the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. The church community is summoned to assembly for the Lord s Day [Saturday evening through Sunday evening]. This weekly holyday blesses the passage of time and renews the call and commitment of the disciples of Christ. This occurs as we hear the Holy Word of God proclaimed and preached. This occurs as we celebrate and receive the Eucharistic Body and Blood of the Risen Lord. The Lord's Day as Sunday was called from Apostolic times has always been accorded special attention in the history of the Church because of its close connection with the very core of the Christian mystery. In fact, in the weekly reckoning of time Sunday recalls the day of Christ's Resurrection. It is Easter which returns week by week, celebrating Christ's victory over sin and death, the fulfillment in him of the first creation and the dawn of the new creation (confer 2 Corinthians 5:17). 3 March 22, 2009 Fourth Sunday in Lent Food Pantry Needs: Canned Fruit and Personal Care Items Ushers, Communion Ministers and Acolytes: Triduum Coming! Please sign up in the sacristy for the Triduum liturgies Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday. Please fill in the days you want as soon as possible, and note the practice times for the liturgies. Practice for all the Holy Week liturgies are on Saturday, April 4. All liturgical ministers are expected to attend. Heifer International If you re following your Heifer International calendar you should be starting week 4! Collection baskets will be placed in the narthex next weekend. Please bring your cardboard arks filled with the money you have collected. A Christian Passover Supper (Seder Meal): Please come and celebrate with your family and your parish family this very special meal on Sunday, April 5 beginning at 5:00 p.m. and lasting till about 7:00 p.m. Seating is limited to the first 100 so make your reservations early! Deadline is March 30. Cost is $6.00 per adult and $3 for children 12 and younger. Although the meal is intended for families, it begins with a minute ritual prayer that may be too long for children under the age of four. Reservation forms can be found in the west entrance, or the Prayer and Worship Office. Pastoral Council Needs YOU! As we approach the Glory and Joy of Easter, one of the everyday items of being part of a Parish needs to be addressed. Specifically, we need parishioners to reflect on their talents and their willingness to serve God as a member of the Parish Council. If now is not the time for you, then, think of others around you that might respond to the invitation to serve. The first phase of the Parish Council Discernment process will begin on the weekend of March 28/29 when you can nominate a fellow parishioner as well as yourself. To assure the future success of Good Shepherd, we need you to step forward and emulate the Servant Leadership that has always been the hallmark of the parishioners of Good Shepherd. Faith In Our Future Team Meeting on March 25 The next Faith In Our Future Team meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 25. Each station will connect the experience of Jesus to relevant life situations. This prayer experience is geared toward teenagers, but all are welcome to attend and participate. SAVE THE DATE for OUR NEXT FAMILY GAME NIGHT! The next family game night will be on Saturday, April 25 th after 4:30 mass in Daniel s Hall. Andre Papineau. The different transitions we go through are potentially religious experiences. Being aware of the potential for even the most irreligious of our experiences as spiritual might prove that God is closer than we think!

4 The Lord Calls Us To Conversion March 22, 2009 Fifth in a series of Lenten reflections Presented by our local area LARCUM churches The Lord calls us to conversion. The season of Lent each year asks us to pause and reflect on our lives in the light of the death and resurrection of Jesus. St. Benedict recognized the Lenten journey as a special opportunity to reform our lives when he remarked: The life of a monk ought to be a continuous Lent. Since few, however, have the strength for this, we urge the entire community during these days of Lent to keep its manner of life most pure and to wash away in this holy season the negligences of other times. What St. Benedict says about the monks has value for individual Christians, whatever their status, and for the entire church. Lent is meant to clarify our vision of what is truly important in our lives our willingness to follow as a disciple of the Lord Jesus. Each follower of Jesus is to take advantage of the weeks of Lent to break away from sin by the grace of God. This often requires rectifying thoughts, judgments, habits, and individual and collective behavior. To bring about these changes by the light of Christ, to reconcile ourselves with others, to repent for injustices, we need time: the season of Lent offers this year after year. While Lent is certainly a period marked by seriousness, it is also a time of joy. It is a joyful walk toward the celebration of Easter. If the church refrains from singing Alleluia during this whole time, it is not to have us clothed in sadness, but to deepen our joy and to cause the Resurrection Alleluia to endlessly reverberate from one assembly to another to the four corners of the world. Let our Lenten journey lead us to complete joy of the Risen Lord in our Easter celebrations! The St. Mary's and St. Anthony's Blood Drive was held on Monday, March 9th.We had 105 people registered to donate blood and 81 units were collected. Please note that the next Blood Drive will be on May 12th in Conference Room A&B at St. Mary s. If you are 16 and you would like to donate, all you need to have is your parent's consent (a form would need to be filled out). Please place this date in your calendars now. Have a Blessed Easter! Some former non-practicing Catholics will share their stories and listen to your feelings and concerns. There is no obligation, and perhaps some of your questions will be answered. The sale will be in the main lobby ONLY after masses on March 28&29. Proceeds are for the benefit of Ellacuria, our sister parish in El Salvador. Eternal Rest Please remember in your prayers Jim Maples, husband of our Director of Child Ministry, Lorrie Maples. Jim was born into eternal life on Thursday, March 5, Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, March 10th at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. How would you like to participate? As noted in last week s bulletin, Mark Brandl will be ordained to the priesthood on May 23rd and celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving here at Good Shepherd on May 30th, at 4:30pm. Mark is the first son of the parish to be ordained a priest in our 52-year history. Mark invites us to be a further part of that day in two ways: 1) A head-count! Some of us feel close to Mark and would like to be a guest at the dinner that follows the Mass. Mark needs our names so he can have an accurate meal count. Call in your reservation to the Parish Office as soon as possible. (By April 10) 2) Helpers! Others of us will also feel that we would like to help out with that day. Mark is also looking for people who are willing to help with the food service for the meal. Mark has asked that we collect names of willing people so that he will know ahead of time if there are enough people to do it.
