OUR MISSION STATEMENT Good Shepherd is a Christian, caring community, nourished by a joyful spirit-filled liturgy that inspires our daily lives. We strive to welcome, accept and love all people as they are, and through our ministries reach out with active concern to those in need.

2 I SAID YES! I have been working in parish ministry for twenty-five years. I was baptized twenty-five years ago too! My baptism was directly connected to my call to ministry. In fact, I was called to be a pastoral music director and liturgist before I was baptized. My baptism was my yes to God s call to service and discipleship. I did not come to the church unfamiliar with Christianity. That story began years before. When I was a child, my friends and I would walk to Sunday school, stay for church service and then enjoy the fellowship that followed. We learned bible stories, sang hymns, and listened to sermons at the Grimes Community Church. In college I chose to study music because, for me, it is holy. I listened and sang prayers set to music. I became familiar and comfortable with the theology and worship of the Catholic Church through music. After graduate school I was invited to go to Mass with my daughter s friends. I said yes. It was Epiphany Sunday. They asked me to help with the music for confirmation. I said yes. Before I knew it, I was the music director for the parish. There I was selecting and leading the sung prayers of the assembly. It was probably a good time to look into being baptized. After meeting with Sister Margaret Mary for a few weeks, I was baptized on June 24, the Birthday of John the Baptist. I said yes to a lifetime of yes! Twenty-five years later, I am still saying yes to God s call to discipleship. I am the Director of Christian Formation at Good Shepherd Catholic Church where I help others say yes to God s call. How Have You Said Yes? By Lorrie Maples

If you have any questions, call Corinna at Reminiscing Ministry Is God calling you to help in this new ministry? We are looking for volunteers to serve as leaders at local nursing homes to guide groups of seniors in sharing their life stories. This will take one hour of your time, twice a month starting in September. They have fun and you will too! Training provided. Call Dorothy Link at First Communion & First Reconciliation Sacramental Prep Mailed Christian Formation mailed registration forms and information regarding First Reconciliation and First Communion preparation for children in 2 nd grade. If you did not receive the registration materials, please call the Christian Formation Office. If your child is in the 3 rd grade or older and desires to receive First Reconciliation or First Communion in 2009/10, please talk to Lorrie Maples in the Christian Formation Office. Presentation of the Gifts: Gift Bearers One of the most ancient customs of the Church is that of the people themselves providing the bread and wine for the Eucharist. Although the faithful no longer bring bread and wine from their homes as before, the rite of carrying up the gifts continues the spiritual value and meaning of presenting the work of human hands, an exercise of our royal priesthood. Please sign up on the sheets posted on the freestanding bulletin board in the west lobby of church. All Good Shepherd families and households are invited and encouraged to fulfill this priestly role. If you are single, invite some friends to participate with you in this ministry. If you want to do this but can t walk the steps, arrangements will be made for someone else to place the bread and wine on the altar; i.e. the acolyte, deacon, or presider will place the gifts on the altar for you. Just notify an usher. Birthdays, anniversaries, just being alive are great occasions for being gift bearers. A full and rich adventure in adult faith formation! Both programs start August 29, For more information call Jane Clare in the parish office. 5 Recording Secretary for Pastoral Council. Thanks to Steve Gardipee for his faithful service as volunteer recording secretary for the Pastoral Council since Steve will be moving on from this position, which leaves a vacancy for that particular role. Moving forward, to fill this position we are looking for several people to rotate taking the minutes for the Pastoral Council meeting. The council meets monthly, so a rotating group would mean taking minutes just a few times a year. For more information or to volunteer for this position, please call the parish office. Blood Pressure Ministry Needs a Helper We are looking for a host or hostess to help with the Blood Pressures once a month after the 11am mass. This person does not have to be a nurse or practitioner, but just a friendly face to help greet parishioners, give them the appropriate paperwork, and help the process move smoothly for those who've come to have their blood pressure taken. Does this sound like something with which you could help? If so, please contact Laverne Schoonover to volunteer at (262) Annual Lanterns for Peace Event Saturday. August 8th (5:30-9pm), Pere Marquette Park, downtown Milwaukee. Commemorating the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The event includes music and family activities beginning at 5:30pm, a program with speakers and music at 7:30pm, and the traditional Floating of Lanterns at 8:30pm. This event is sponsored by Peace Action Wisconsin. Check them out at A Quiet Observation On June 19 th I quietly observed my tenth anniversary at Good Shepherd parish. It has been a wonderful decade, some of the best years of my priestly ministry. Anniversaries are a time when you look back and remember what has been but you also look forward to what will be. Looking ahead, I realize that in two years (from June 19 th ) I will have completed my second term of 6 years at Good Shepherd. According to the policy of the Archdiocese a priest who is serving as pastor is allowed two sixyear terms at a parish---so those terms are up for me in June of But in September of 2012 I will reach retirement age of 68; and in these cases the Archdiocese often allows the pastor to stay beyond the two six year terms to reach retirement without transferring to a new parish for just one year. All of this time line is given as background to a request that I put in to our Good Shepherd Prayer and Worship Commission. I asked them to consider this---for ten years now the people of Good Shepherd have had a steady diet of me as their presider at Liturgy (except for when I was on sabbatical or on vacation); ten years of a steady diet, even no matter if it is your favorite food, is a long time. Other presiders bring out various other aspects of the liturgy by the way they preside, and that variety is to the benefit of the worshipping assembly by helping them round out their understanding of the Liturgy more fully. As you all know a percentage of the money donated to the Faith in Our Future Archdiocesan Campaign comes back to the parish through which it was contributed. Good Shepherd Pastoral Council after consultations with parishioners determined that the Faith in Our Future funds that come back to us would be used in three areas of our parish mission: to supplement our outreach efforts, to supplement our religious education/formation mission especially Generations of Faith, and to augment the Liturgy and worship life of the parish. At their meeting on Monday July 13, our Prayer and Worship Commission approved that they would go to the Pastoral Council and ask them to confirm that the expenditure of small a part of the Liturgy portion of the Faith in Our Future money to have an outside priest come in for one Mass on a weekend would be a suitable use of some of these funds. Fr. Jose Eluvathingal, who you enjoyed while I was on sabbatical, is interested in rejoining us in this way. In the Good Shepherd, Kenneth Mich Sign Up Sunday Are you interested in learning more about Good Shepherd? Would you like to join our wonderful parish? Have you been coming to mass weekend after weekend saying to yourself, I really should become a parish member.? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then please join us next Sunday, July 26 th at 9:40 in the Chapel for Sign up Sundays. Information about our parish life, ministries, faith formation opportunities and registration materials will be provided. If you have any questions, or are interested in attending, please contact Shari Rodriguez at the parish office at
