In 2010, The Three Days begin on the evening of April 1 st and end on the evening of April 4 th. Make it your purpose to celebrate with your community the sacred liturgies when the Church is at her best. [See schedule above.] With the evening of Holy Thursday, Lent ends. We then live into The Three Days, the center of our liturgical year The. The Three Days express the Church s essence and the heart of Christian discipleship. We celebrate the central mystery of our faith the death and resurrection of Jesus. During the Three Days, old Christians are renewed and new Christians initiated. These "holiest days" of Christianity enable us to re-enter the saving mysteries, not to re-enact events from history. Jesus will not be raised from the dead again. We do not enter the uncertain of the outcome. The Risen Christ died once and ever lives in glory. In the we enter our newest experience of our dying and rising as disciples of Christ. In remembering, all Christ is and did is made present in the Church. A ssemble with other disciples of this community. Make the Three Days different from all other days in essence and practice. Keep the Three Days free of social engagements, free of busy work, free of mindless diversion and even free of meals, except for the simplest nourishment. After the Mass of the Lord s Supper until after the Easter Vigil, keep the Fast, not of penitence, but of anticipation. Make room in your life for the Resurrection. Please bring back your Habitat for Humanity Lenten collection boxes this week or next. We will be sending the money collected to the Haiti branch of Habitat for Humanity where the need for assistance is still great. And THANK YOU. LISTEN TO THE LORD Listen to the Lord is a ministry for children K5-5th grade. Every Sunday at the 8:30 AM Mass and at the 11:00 Mass, children are sent to the day chapel after the opening prayer to break open the Word with their peers. They sing a short psalm and gospel acclamation, hear the reading, share what they have heard, pray intercessions and sing the creed. The children are always well behaved and a joy to be with. Please consider this ministry as it is important to the children and to Good Shepherd. We have wonderful materials, training, support and flexible scheduling, if you decide this ministry is for you. Cast Members are Good Shepherd Parishioners Where: In the Church Tuesday of Holy Week March 30-7:00 p.m. And Good Friday, April 2 3:00 p.m. Cost: Free An Introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls With Dr. Deirdre Dempsey of Marquette University Thursday, March 25 th ~ 7:00 9:00 pm at Good Shepherd Parish ~ Daniels Hall This evening will offer an overview of the Dead Sea Scrolls including: * The history of the finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls; This Week! * The politics and problems that impacted the publication of the scrolls, and * The importance of the scrolls for Christians and Jews. Dr. Dempsey is an associate professor in the Department of Theology at Marquette University. She has taught courses on the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as courses on a variety of Old Testament books. Her Ph.D. is from the Catholic University of America - the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures and her area of expertise is Northwest Semitic Languages - Hebrew and Aramaic. Dead Sea Scrolls Registrants 12:00 Noon Departure For those who have registered for the Dead Sea Scrolls on March 28 (Palm Sunday): The school bus will depart Good Shepherd at 12:00 p.m. Please plan to arrive between 11:45-12:00. Good Shepherd Tours of the Dead Sea Scrolls will begin at 1:00 p.m. Included in our package, the Imax film, Secrets of the Dead Sea begins at 2:30 p.m. Participants will have access to the entire Public Museum as well. The bus will depart from the Museum at 4:15 p.m. We will be back at Good Shepherd about 5:00 p.m. Fire up! (The bus is full. You may call in to be on a waiting list in case someone cancels.) A MEN S DISCUSSION OF THE SHACK Continuing on March 24, 2010, all men are invited to a discussion of The Shack, a fictional book written by William Paul Young depicting a broken man s dialogue with the divine. Even though we started in January and the discussion continued in February, it is not a pre-requisite for the gathering in March. The gathering, sponsored by the Good Shepherd Men s Group, will take place in Rm. 203 at 7:00 pm. 5 Attention all Liturgical Ministers Please sign up in the sacristy for the liturgies Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday. Please fill in the days you want as soon as possible, and note the practice times for the liturgies. Practice for all the Holy Week liturgies are on Saturday, March 27. All liturgical ministers are expected to attend. Holy Thursday, April 1, 6:15 p.m. Sign-up for our on the boards in both lobbies. Married, single, old or young, all are invited. Bring a friend, and then celebrate the Mass of the Lord s Supper, 7:30 p.m. Agape, Holy Saturday, April 3, following the Easter Vigil Come celebrate with your parish family. Please bring sliced cheese (A-M) and crackers (N-Z) to share during the agape. Drop off in the kitchen prior to the 8:00 p.m. service. Passion (Palm) Sunday Next Sunday is Palm Sunday. We gather in Daniels Hall for the blessing of the palms and hear the first gospel reading. Please gather in the hall so that we, as one body, can walk the journey with Jesus through his passion, death and resurrection. The liturgical color is red; so, wear some RED. Incense will be used in the Palm Procession from the hall to church at all the Palm Sunday Masses, March 27/28. A Christian Passover Supper (Seder Meal) March 28 5:00 p.m.: If you have not returned your reservation form, please do so as soon as possible to the Prayer and Worship Office. Come and celebrate with your family and your parish family this very special meal on Sunday, March 28 beginning at 5:00 p.m. and lasting till about 7:00 p.m. Deadline is Monday, March 22. Cost is $6.00 per adult and $3 for children 12 and younger. Although the meal is intended for families, it begins with a minute ritual prayer that may be too long for children under the age of four. Reservation forms can be found in the west entrance, the Prayer and Worship Office. This Christian Passover Supper follows the order of a full meal and prayer service similar to the Jewish families celebration of Passover. Ours is called a Christian Passover Meal, because it not only reminds us of the Passover feast of the Jews, but also celebrates the tradition from which Jesus instituted the Eucharist. Jesus came up to Jerusalem for the Passover and was crucified during this time. The meal gives one an idea of what the Last Supper was like. Our dinner menu includes beef, potatoes, vegetables, salad, dessert, coffee and milk. In the Spotlight, 2010 An Adult Formation series - 9:45 am Sunday Mornings Daniels Hall Childcare Available This Week: 5th Sunday of Lent March 21 Discovering the Bible s DNA The Old Testament with Dr. Patrick Russell This two session mini-course will unveil the Bible s basic themes its DNA structure which organize the biblical books and their contents. The first session will focus on the Old Testament. while the second session will delve into the New Testament. Through this process, we will discover that the biblical writings outline the two fundamental ways that we are genetically drawn into relationship with the greatest mystery: God s love. Next Time: 2nd Sunday of Easter April 11: Discovering the Bible s DNA The NEW Testament with Dr. Patrick Russell Dr. Patrick Russell is Assistant Professor of Scripture studies at Sacred Heart School of Theology, in Hales Corners, WI. He has his Ph.D. from Marquette University in biblical studies. He is author of The God Questions: What Forms and Shapes Us (Liguori Publications, 2007) and numerous articles on Scripture and spirituality. He is married to Stephanie and they have four sons.
