This faith-based curriculum is for those grieving the death of a friend or family member. New participants are welcome to join either group at any time. We host Souper Suppers in Hancock Hall every Thursday until the end of April. Individuals, Sunday school classes, UMW Circles, families, or any small group are welcome to serve in several different ways: Prepare a meal to feed our neighbors. 11 A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial The United Methodist Women will be presenting A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial on Monday, February 18, at 10:00 a.m. in Hancock Hall. This year, Susie Weller will lead the program. She is the executive director of Children First, Inc., an Athens-based organization dedicated to promoting safe homes for children in times of family crisis. All women are invited to attend. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. The study will meet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7:00 p.m., beginning February 12 in room 229. The study is free and open to all. Register online. Senior Fun Luncheon February 28 This month s Senior Fun Luncheon is on Thursday, February 28, at 12:00 p.m. in Hancock Hall. Cynthia Graubart, food writer, acclaimed cookbook author, and former cooking show television producer, will lead the program. She will share her passion for food and love for her home state s abundant produce. Isaiah Feken, a gifted baritone and doctoral candidate in opera performance at UGA, will perform four solos. The luncheon cost is $6. All who are over 50 are encouraged to register now by calling the church office. Reservations should be placed by 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 27. 12 Barbara Brown Taylor Holy Envy Join us for an evening with Barbara Brown Taylor on Wednesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Hancock Hall. Barbara Brown Taylor is an Episcopal priest, professor, and wellknown author. In 2014, TIME magazine placed her in its annual TIME 100 list of most influential people in the world. Her latest book, Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others will be released in March. Barbara will discuss holy envy as a peaceful way to engage and live in community with people of religious differences. Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others, along with a few more of her books, will be available for sale that evening by Avid Bookshop. After the program, she will be signing copies of her book. More than 380 years later, they are still upholding this promise by performing the Passion Play once every ten years! In addition to Oberammergau, Germany, the trip will include stops in Innsbruck and Salzburg, Austria and Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany. 13 Scout Sunday February 10, 2019 Scouting ministries at our church were blessed in We sponsor four Scouting Units that provide leadership development, outdoor skills, and faith support to young people ages Your prayers, gifts, and participation in fundraising projects support our success. We thank you! Girl Scout Troop (girls, grades 1-7) has been on a journey of discovery. These girls in grades K-10 have connected with each other during retreats at the Athens Girl Scout Holder Center and campouts at Tugaloo, Watson Mill, and A.H. Stephens State Park. To be thrifty, girls have also had a few backyard campouts. Our 45 girls and nine leaders have connected to their community by visiting art galleries, showing appreciation to police officers, caring for animals, and entering a float into the Parade of Lights. Maya Clement and Dolan O Neal have completed Program Aide Training and served as assistants for the River Shoals Area Summer Day Camp. Several of the Girl Scouts are currently working on the high-award for their respective level. Five girls are preparing their bodies for mountain hiking and their funds in Swiss bank accounts for a trip to the international Girl Guide and Girl Scout lodge, Our Chalet, in Switzerland during the summer of Amy Atao amyatao@yahoo.com BSA Venture Crew 1 (girls & boys, ages 14-20) is in its seventh year. In 2018, Crew 1 earned Journey to Excellence Gold which is the top rating possible for the BSA quality unit system.the crew continues to prosper as we worked to replace a large cadre of six graduating seniors by recruiting new venturers and adult leaders to reach a level of seven venturers and seven adults. The crew completed a 12-day trip to Yellowstone National Park highlighted by wildlife viewing, horseback riding in the Tetons, whitewater rafting, and backpacking. Crew activities this year included rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, backpacking, and service to a variety of conservation projects. Marcus Fechheimer mfechheimer@gmail.com Boy Scout Troop 1 (boys, grades 5 & 6-12) begins its 84th year with Athens First United Methodist Church! We recently completed our recharter with 22 scouts and 15 adult leaders. Once again, Troop 1 has earned Journey to Excellence Gold which is the top rating possible for the BSA quality unit system. Over the past year, we have participated in weekend outings including whitewater rafting on the Nantahala, a visit to Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah, caving at the Lost Sea Caverns in Tennessee, two Advance-a-Ramas working on merit badges, and a week of summer camp at Camp Rainey Mountain. We also served as one of the staff Troops for the Cub Scouts Fall Family Camp at Camp Rainey Mountain. Dylan Wyrick earned Scouting s highest rank of Eagle Scout in October. Scott Miller served as Woodbadge staff offering the highest level of adult leadership training available in Scouting and also became the new Scoutmaster of Troop 1. In the coming year, we look forward to hiking, biking, canoeing the Okefenokee, horseback riding, and many other fun activities, including a 12-day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch. The pack earned Gold Status again, the top rating under BSA quality unit system ranking Journey to Excellence. Boys from Pack 1 participated in day and overnight camps, family camps, our annual flag retirement ceremony, and many field trips. The pack also hosted our annual Pancake Supper. Up next, the Pack will compete in the Pinewood Derby, clean the church before Easter, and host our spring family campout.
