2 Welcome We re glad you re here! Thank you for joining us today. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804, when our church was formed to minister to the Native American and European settlers in Athens. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community. If you are unable to attend worship in person, each Sunday our 11:00 a.m. service is broadcast on WRFC 960 AM, and our 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. services are live-streamed on our website at athensfirstumc.org/webcast. Nursery Our nursery is available for infants through four-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m. 12:15 p.m. The nursery area is located on the first floor of the building, off the Washington Street entrance. Children Worship activity bags (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the narthex and by the south entrance of the sanctuary. Children s Church is held for children in kindergarten through second grade and follows the Children s Message during 11:00 a.m. worship all Sundays except for Communion Sundays. Sunday School We offer Sunday School for all ages, kindergarten through adult, each Sunday from 9:45 10:45 a.m. For a list of adult Sunday School classes and locations, visit athensfirstumc.org/ adultsundayschool. There will be delicious food and good music. The Churchwide BBQ is one of the few times when our entire church gathers in one place and the same time. This is great time to meet or catch up with friends who attend different services. Covenant is similar to Disciple Bible study in that you journey through the entire Bible. However, Covenant is unique in the way it focuses on understanding God s enduring commitment to His people. This year we will implement an electronic check-in system which will provide an important level of security for children in our building. This will complement the Safe Sanctuary procedures that we currently follow. We re excited about this opportunity to partner with parents in ensuring the safety of our church s children and youth. Check-in and check-out will be required each time any child or youth between with ages of infant through grade 12 participate in programing (Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Wednesday evening). The program will be provided by Ms. Esther Tonea, a third-year undergraduate student studying music performance in voice and cello at the University of Georgia. Ms. Tonea is a member of the Athens First United Methodist choir, symphony orchestra under the direction of Mr. Mark Cedel, and the Hodgson Singers at the University of Georgia under the direction of Dr. Daniel Bara, which won first place at the summer 2014 European tour at the Ava Vernum International Choral Competition in Austria. In 2013 Ms. Tonea won second place in vocal performance at the Georgia Music Teachers Association Competition. She intends to continue in performance competitions in the future and plans on pursuing a career in music performance. Church Office Dan Maxey Join Scouting Children s Choir Dance The Children s Music Ministry is excited to announce an additional offering for our 3 s, 4 s, and kindergartners on Wednesday evenings. Payton McCarty, a professional dance instructor who is also on staff in the Weekday Preschool, will lead a dance class from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. in room 145 of the Music Suite. Children will learn the basics of ballet and dance in a setting that allows them to explore how to use their bodies to praise and worship God through meaningful movement. We hope you will come to our kick-off night on August 27 to see for yourself the exciting opportunities in Children s Music and the Worship Arts. Cub Scout Meetings Pack 1 (boys grades 1-5) meets in the Cub Scout Hut on Lumpkin Street (Saye Building) on Sundays at 3:00 p.m. and occasional Fridays at 7:00 p.m. for special events. First meeting of the school year is September 7. Rick Warren, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Daniel Amen, and Dr. Mark Hyman collaborated to transform your spiritual, physical, and emotional health. This study will be offered On Trend: Drop off to Date Night September 19 The most important thing to wear is a smile. Ann Taylor On Trend is a night of faith and fashion. During this fun evening we ll be covering fashion tips for young professionals, new moms, and those enjoying retirement. Here is a preview of some tips for new moms to get them from drop off to date night. Layers: Wearing layered clothing is a must for a mom on the run. A fitted tee with a hip-length cardigan is a good look. If you get too warm or if baby spits up on the cardigan, you can take it off. Or, you can even use it as an impromptu baby blanket! Good jeans: Everyone should have at least one pair of dark wash, well-fitting, high-quality jeans. All-purpose tote: Trade the tired old diaper bag for a more fashionable bag. Ballet flats and wedges: Ballet flats are available in all different styles and easily slip on and off. You can even stash an extra pair in your bag for a shoe emergency! If you d like a heel to give you a boost, wedges are another comfortable option. This fall the Towel Brigade is offering a study on Wednesday evenings that explores how love inspires others to embrace our Savior. This study is based on the book Love Stains by Bob Johnson, and will encourage participants to break free from any guilt or pressure to share the gospel and instead encourage simply leaking Jesus wherever they go. This study will meet from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings August 27-October 22. The cost of this study is $16. Childcare is available by registration. This name is reflective of the servant leadership Jesus displayed when He performed actions such as washing His disciples feet. The mission Men s Study: The Power of God s Names All men are welcome to this Bible study based on Tony Evans book, The Power of God s Names. This study, beginning on August 27, looks at how through the names of God the nature of God is revealed to us. This study meets from 6:30-8:00 p.m. and is led by Keith Wilson and Bruce Powers. The materials for this study cost $12.
