2 Welcome We re glad you re here! Thank you for joining us today. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804, when our church was formed to minister to the Native American and European settlers in Athens. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community. If you are unable to attend worship in person, each Sunday our 11:00 a.m. service is broadcast on WRFC 960 AM, and our 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. services are live-streamed on our website at athensfirstumc.org/webcast. Nursery Our nursery is available for infants through four-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m. 12:15 p.m. The nursery area is located on the first floor of the building, off the Washington Street entrance. Children Worship activity bags (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the narthex and by the south entrance of the sanctuary. Children s Church is held for children in kindergarten through second grade and follows the Children s Message during 11:00 a.m. worship all Sundays except for Communion Sundays. Sunday School We offer Sunday School for all ages, kindergarten through adult, each Sunday from 9:45 10:45 a.m. For a list of adult Sunday School classes and locations, visit athensfirstumc.org/ adultsundayschool. Connect We are blessed to have a large congregation and because of this we offer many programs and ministries. It can be overwhelming trying to decide where to get involved. If you would like a buddy to guide you along this process please notify a Helper. Helpers serve as part of our Welcome Ministry team. Look for them in the narthex or near the altar. You can also contact a Helper through our website athensfirstumc.org/helper. Another great way to learn about the life of our church is through attending a Newcomer Orientation held every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11 a.m. We also encourage you to visit our website, athensfirstumc.org, for information about our ministries, to register for events, and to listen to sermons from our sermon archive. 9 Wednesday Night Meals Register by Noon on Tuesdays In Your Mailbox This Week! To kick off our stewardship campaign, we have created a special mailer that introduces this year s theme. We will be focused on 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Be joyful always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances. Be on the look out this week for this mailer, and we look forward to seeing you on November 23 to celebrate Consecration Sunday. The meal for October 22 is Jason s Deli. This meal is $5 and is served from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in Hancock Hall. Registration by Tuesday, October 21, at noon is required. The program will be provided by the UGA Hodgson Singers under the direction of Dr. Dan Bara. They are one of the best college glee clubs in America; they won first place in International competition in June in Baden, Austria. Please make reservations for this luncheon by Monday, October 20, by calling the church office. Dan Maxey AFUMC Service Day October 25 The missions ministry of Athens First United Methodist Church is excited about the beginning of AFUMC Service Days. AFUMC Service Days have begun in response to our church family s strong presence during the Great Day of Service. Many said they wanted more days to come together as one to serve, and AFUMC Service Days are the THE STEEPLE 7

10 answer to that call. Please join us for the first AFUMC Service Day on Saturday, October 25. This Service Day will also be a celebration of the beginning of Stewardship. We will gather at 8:30 a.m. for coffee before serving from 9:00 a.m. to noon. There are family-friendly projects but childcare is available with registration for children four years and younger. There are several projects to choose from: caring for our church building through organizing, cleaning, and construction projects, hosting the Mobile Food Pantry on our sanctuary steps, serving at the Salvation Army Community Garden, and disassembling a swing set and reassembling it at a second local location. Let us know if you will be able to serve by registering online. Childcare is available by registration for children under 4. Instead of our normal Wednesday night meal, we will be celebrating with a potluck dinner. Meat will be provided; please bring sides. Dinner will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Hancock Hall! We are looking forward to a delightful night of celebration and fellowship at this churchwide potluck dinner. Men s Study: Follow Me October 29 Follow Me looks at our response to Jesus request to follow Him. This group will begin meeting on October 29 at 7:00 p.m. after the Mission Harvest event. Two different sessions of this study will be offered. The Wednesday night session will meet on November 5, 12, and 19 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in room 222. The Sunday night session will meet November 9, 16, and 23 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in room 224. There is no cost to participate, all materials are provided, and childcare is available by registration. Please make your reservations by Friday, November 7 by calling the church office. Dan Maxey Listen: Praying in a Noisy World Beginning November 5 Listen: Praying in a Noisy World by Rueben P. Job is a sixweek small-group study that focuses on how to pray and how to listen, understand, and respond to God s guidance and direction. Each week has a daily prayer pattern that includes a prayer practice, scripture, and reflection. This study is great for both newcomers and those who have participated in other studies. Participants are asked to read the introduction through week 1 (pages 5-34) prior to the first group session, if possible. The study will meet on Wednesdays November 5- December 17 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Come and preview the study after Mission Harvest on October 29. The book is $13 or is available on Kindle. We will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a true Thanksgiving feast in Hancock Hall. Following lunch we will have a special service of prayers of thanksgiving and prayers for peace led by veterans. A Volunteers Needed at International Student Life Thanksgiving Dinner November 17 Volunteers of every talent are needed to help serve the nations at the REACH International/International Student Life (ISL) Thanksgiving Dinner on November 17 in Hancock Hall. 13 The Quarter Life Crisis New Young Adult Sunday School Class Altar Rail Offering Each Sunday those who worship at Athens First United Methodist Church have the opportunity to leave a special offering on the altar rail. These funds are not a part of the budget, and are used to help those who come to Athens First United Methodist Church in need. Funds given on the altar rail help families who have exhausted all other opportunities for assistance and who are in desperate circumstances. Donations may be left on the altar rail after any worship service. Are you looking for a Sunday School Class? If you are between the ages of 25 and 35, then look no more. A new class has recently begun, The Quarter Life Crisis Class. This class meets at 11:00 a.m. in room 224 and is designed to reach out to the young professional members of Athens First United Methodist Church. If you are seeking more involvement in the church, friendships, or just a place to belong, this class is for you. For additional information please contact Beth Jackson. Currently in the church library is a display of some of these authors books. Please stop by the library and take a look! This ministry started with five lunches each Sunday five years ago, now we are up to 40 lunches per week! This is a wonderful project for small groups or Sunday school classes to do together. So often when we see those in need we struggle to find a way to respond. Preparing sack lunches is a meaningful way to meet a need in our downtown community.
