Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. 9 The Steeple Prayer Beads Workshop Wednesday, February 7 6:30 p.m. Sunday, February 11 5:30 p.m. Plan to join Kristen Vincent, author of A Bead and a Prayer, on Wednesday, February 7, at 6:30 p.m. or on Sunday, February 11, at 5:30 p.m. to learn about the history of protestant prayer beads and to make your own set of prayer beads to begin using throughout the season of Lent. 10 Sympathy Heartfelt Christian sympathy is extended to Mary Ann Sullivan and her family in the loss of her father, Charles Hicks, on January 17. New Members On January 21 we welcomed Evan and Beth Massey and their children Mary Ford and Haynes; and Christy Fricks and Andrew Lentini and their children Gabriel, Jackson, Arlia, and Ocean to the Athens First United Methodist Church family. Wednesday Night Meals The meal on Wednesday, January 31, is provided by Pack One Cub Scouts. Our traditional Wednesday Night Meal will resume next week with dinner provided by Barberitos. Register athensfirstumc.org/registration Cindy McKoy GriefShare Join us this Wednesday at GriefShare as we investigate some of the overlooked, yet common, effects grief has on your mind, body, and spirit This thirteen-week faith-based curriculum features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. GriefShare groups are for people grieving the death of a family member or friend. We will meet each Wednesday from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in room 100 and be led by Martha Aenchbacher. Please register online so that we will have materials prepared for you. There is a $20 fee to pay for your workbook. You may pay that fee online when you register, or bring a check with you to the group meeting. Tickets can be purchased before and after the 11:00 a.m. service today outside of the sanctuary and in front of the preschool galleria. If you purchased a semester Wednesday night meal package, it does not include the pancake supper everyone will need a ticket for this meal! Only a limited number of walk-up meals will be available, so we encourage you to buy your tickets early! The cost is $5 per person with a $20 maximum per family. Souper Suppers Each week we will be serving a meal to the community and providing an opportunity for community guests to receive needed household items. We are still in need of groups to provide and serve dinners for the months of March and April. This is a great way to serve with your UMW Circle, Sunday school class, small group, friends, and family! If you are interested in serving in other ways, we will also be collecting the following items for the Souper Suppers store

11 as a way we can continue to support our community: large bottles of dish soap, toilet paper in packs of 4, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and 30 gallon trash bags in boxes of 10. This study challenges the popular and trending philosophies of the day, pointing out the fallacies in their claims and presenting compelling evidence for absolute truth as found in Jesus and revealed in scripture. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship. the kaleidoscope project Kaleidoscope Project Psalm 133 says how very good and pleasant it is when people live as one. We invite you to be a part of the Kaleidoscope Project on Thursday afternoons from 4:00 4:30 p.m. in the youth area. This new component to our Souper Suppers ministry allows the downtown community to come together to make music. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is the time when we prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual discipline. During our service, one of our ministers will lightly rub the sign of the IHNA During the week of February 11-18, we are partnering with the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens to host displaced families in our community in need of temporary housing. There are numerous ways to serve throughout the week. These opportunities include driving the IHNA van, preparing a meal, spending time hosting our guests in the evening and overnight, and helping with set-up and takedown at the beginning and end of the host week. There is a place for everyone to be involved with this wonderful ministry! 12 The Way of Blessedness Lenten Study Join Dianne Morrison for The Way of Blessedness, the third resource in the Companions in Christ series. Each week is an exploration of one of the Beatitudes from Matthew 5. This nine-week journey helps participants empty themselves of pride so that they can be filled with God s abundant love. This study will be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m., beginning February 21 through April 18, in room 200. The cost of the book is $9. For more information, contact Dianne Morrison. 13 ONE Student Ministries is taking on Spiritual Life Retreat (SLR) again this March for youth in grades SLR begins on Friday evening, March 2, and ends on Sunday afternoon, March 4. This retreat takes place at Camp Glisson, in Dahlonega, Ga., and includes worship, small group discussions, and enriching opportunities for spiritual growth. We are capping this retreat at 36 total students, so the earlier you register, the better. Registration is open until February 14. Please visit our webpage for more information and to register.
