Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. 11 The Steeple Scout Sunday February 12, 2017 Scouting ministries at our church were blessed in We sponsor four Scouting Units that provide leadership development, outdoor skills, and faith support to youths ages Your prayers, gifts, and participation in fundraising projects support our success. We thank you! Girl Scout Troop (girls, grades 1-7) is in its fifth year. There are 35 scouts and eight adult leaders from all over the community. In the past year, we have camped at Elijah Clark State Park, Ft. Yargo State Park, and three times at Watson Mill State Park, where we also completed a service project with the Friends of Watson Mill. Four of our Juniors attained the highest award for their level. Rena Caitlin, Maya Clement, Dolan O Neal, and Carolina Turner earned the Bronze award. In addition to camping, we took a trip to the Georgia Aquarium, went Ice Skating at the Classic Center, and decorated Christmas trees at Iris Place. Today we are hosting a Fashion show in Hancock Hall for the World Thinking Day celebration. Jennnifer Lewis jbmlewis@gmail.com Boy Scout Troop 1 (boys, grades 5&6-12) is now in its 82nd year and has 16 scouts and seven adult leaders. Once again, the Troop earned Gold Status in the Journey to Excellence program. Thirteen scouts attended summer camp at Camp Rainey Mountain completing 29 merit badges. Uly Johnston completed National Youth Leadership Training at Scoutland. An adult leader completed Woodbadge training. Seven scouts and three adult leaders went to Sea Base in the Bahamas for a week-long adventure sailing, snorkeling, and exploring the islands. In 2016, Troop 1 had two young men attain the highest rank in Scouting; Daniel Gragson and Seavy O Neal both earned the Eagle Rank. The Troop plans to cross over several Webelos Scouts this spring and is currently preparing for a Chicken BBQ fundraiser next week, a Souper Service project in March, a Spring Court of Honor in May, and summer camp at Camp Daniel Boone in June. Chuck Hanna cjhanna@gmail.com BSA Venture Crew 1 (girls & boys, ages 14-20) is now in its fourth year and currently has 14 members. Since completing a successful expedition at Philmont in 2015, Crew 1 has been active at a variety of venues including a backpack trip to Case Knife Gap, canoeing on the Tugaloo River, camping at Fort Yargo, day trips to climbing gyms, bike trips, and a journey to the Hike Inn at Amacalola Falls State Park. In 2017, Crew 1 has new leadership and has recruited a new group of youth that look forward to backpacking, mountain climbing, and whitewater kayaking. Crew 1 will also be starting practice hikes for another trip to Philmont in the summer of Service Projects include a Souper Supper with the Troop and volunteering at the Project Safe Thrift store. Jim Timberlake jim.timberlake@abernathytimberlake.com Cub Scout Pack 1 (boys, grades 1-5) is now in its sixth year. Pack 1 s membership includes 68 boys and 20 adult leaders. The pack earned Gold Status, the top rating possible under BSA s quality unit system ranking Journey to Excellence. Boys from Pack 1 participated in day camps, overnight camps, family camps, and smaller outings and field trips. In the coming months, the Pack will compete in the Pinewood Derby, clean the church prior to Easter, and host our annual Pancake Supper. Fourteen adults attended The University of Scouting in December and three adults completed Woodbadge training. Last May, five leaders were recognized with Cherokee District awards and Cubmaster Nat Carmack was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest adult recognition a Council can bestow. Four Webelos Scouts crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 1 in 2016 and 10 more are expected to cross over this year. Nat Carmack carmacknat@gmail.com 9

We thank everyone for their support of this ministry to share food with those who are hungry around the world! Boy Scout Troop 1 is selling BBQ chicken box lunches for $9 per plate for carryout on Sunday, February 19, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Lunches include a BBQ chicken half, freshly cooked that morning, plus coleslaw, applesauce, bread, and pickles. Tickets will be sold following each service today at the Hancock Avenue entrance, the music suite entrance, and outside of the main sanctuary entrance. Tickets can also be purchased from any Troop 1 member. Lunches will be available for pick-up in the kitchen opposite of Hancock Hall and seating will be available in Hancock Hall. Limited walk-up lunches will be available, so buy a ticket to be sure you get a meal! Thank you for supporting Troop 1 as they raise funds for trips and equipment for our growing and active Scout troops. Denson was recently named one of the 100 most influential citizens of the state by Georgia Trend magazine. Daniell s popularity allowed him to run unopposed for Oconee s highest office. Church office New Pickleball Opportunity Join us every Tuesday and, beginning February 23, every Thursday afternoon from 1:30-3:00 p.m. to play pickleball! This is a great sport consisting of ping pong, tennis, and badminton all in one! We enjoy fellowship while getting exercise; this is a great game for active adults. Rusty Wood rusty@athensfirstumc.org GriefShare Children's Soccer Boys and girls ages 3-6 are invited to join us for our spring season, March through May All teams are coed. Practices and games will take place on Saturday mornings. This thirteen-week faith-based curriculum features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. GriefShare groups are for people grieving the death of a family member or friend. Erica Cooper, bereavement coordinator of Gentiva Hospice, will facilitate both groups. The Monday group meets at 6:30 p.m. and the Wednesday group meets at 10:00 a.m. New participants are welcome to join at any time. This will be a great worship service of information, celebration, and inspiration. In life and in death, Jesus words were powerful and meaningful. Despite the serious effort and increased pain required for Jesus to speak as he hung on the cross, Jesus spoke seven final words statements that have much to teach us about Jesus, his Father, and ourselves. Please join us in this study for Lent. We will be offering it on Sunday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. beginning February 26 in room 222 and on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. beginning March 8 in room 222. The study is free of charge. The study is also available Youth Choir Weekend Save the date for Youth Choir Weekend! The Wesleyan Youth Choir will be hosting three visiting youth choirs for a weekend full of fun, fellowship, singing, and worship. You will not want to miss the talent show on Saturday night, February 25, at 7:00 p.m. or worship on Sunday morning, February 26, at the 9:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. Guest youth choirs include Trinity United Methodist Church from Birmingham, AL; Peachtree Road United Methodist Church from Atlanta, GA; and First United Methodist Church from Buford, GA. 12

Lyric and Celebrate Choirs will meet at 4:30 in the Chapel and will welcome visitors beginning at 5:00 p.m. for a time of prayer and singing. Cherub choir (3s) will sing for friends and family at 5:30 in their usual room on the third floor and Sonshine (4s) and Joy (K5) choirs will join together with visitors at 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel.
