We gather to share Word and sacrament, to discern the ways of faithful service. Where in the world shall we serve our God? At home and school and business place in this community and throughout every land. How in the world shall we serve our God? By working toward justice where there is oppression, by offering comfort where there is pain, by sharing love where there is hatred. Why in the world shall we serve our God? Because the Spirit beckons us, because Jesus calls us to enact our faith. Let us now worship the one who calls us! We confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We overlook the poor and the hungry, and pass by those who mourn; we are deaf to the cries of the oppressed, and indifferent to the calls for peace; we despise the weak, and abuse the earth you made. Forgive us, God of mercy. Help us to trust your power to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the joy of life abundant given in Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. 6 Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. From among all the nations of the earth you have called us to be your children, members of the family of God, and members of the Body of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. And so, with your children on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son, Jesus Christ. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection You gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. Jesus commissioned us to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth, among all people in all times and places, and to make disciples of all nations. And today his family throughout the whole world joins at his holy table, proclaiming the real presence of Christ Jesus, who unites us together and makes us one. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples and said: Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. Renew our communion with your Church throughout the world, and strengthen us all to witness faithfully in your name. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. 10 Announcements New Members On September 29 we welcomed Virginia and Charles Schutte to the Athens First United Methodist family. Baptism Benjamin Beck Nesbit received the Sacrament of Baptism on September 29 in our sanctuary. He is the son of Jenny and Jason Nesbit. Adelaide Marie Schutte received the Sacrament of Baptism on September 29 in our sanctuary. She is the daughter of Virginia and Charles Schutte. Sympathy Heartfelt Christian sympathy is extended to Jeff Van Tone and family in the loss of his mother, Evelyn Crist Van Tone, on September 20 in Conyers, Georgia. Agapé We are collecting deodorant, new washcloths, razors, travel wet wipes, and toothpaste for our Agape collection. These items will go to local mission partners. Please bring donations of these items to the basket behind the reception desk. 11 This We Believe October 9 What do Methodists believe? This We Believe: The Core of Wesleyan Faith and Practice, a seven-week study of fundamental Methodist beliefs by Bishop William Willimon. This study provides a fresh way to understand our beliefs, hear God s voice, share in God s grace, and live every day as a child of God. The study will meet on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. October 9 through November 20. Register online at athensfirstumc.org/registration. The book is $13 or available on Kindle.
