2 Welcome We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. 9 The Steeple FAMILIES ON THE FIFTH Kids in Grades 1 4 and their grownups are invited to join us for Church House Rock! We ll dig into the background and meaning behind these words we say every week in church. GriefShare groups are for people grieving the death of a family member or friend. Erica Cooper, bereavement coordinator of Gentiva Hospice, will facilitate both groups. The Monday group will meet at 6:30 p.m. beginning January 23, and the Wednesday group will meet at 10:00 a.m. beginning January 25. New participants are welcome to join at any time. To begin, we will hear the Emily Carey of the UGA Hodgson Singers. Our program speaker is John Cleaveland, a landscape painter and graduate of the University of Georgia. He recently has traveled extensively in Europe studying World War I battlefields, along with their histories, and then painted many of them. He will bring some of them to the program and talk about the historical 8

11 effect World War I had on history. Tom Jackson, our own church member and distinguished scholar/educator, will share in the program from his vantage point as Chair of the Georgia Centennial observance of World War I. Co-leader John Campbell will share his travel experiences with the class. Co-leader and certified lay speaker Bob Dean will discuss the study guide lessons and companion video on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., from January 25 through March 15. Hamilton said that he wrote the book because he believes "...that by reclaiming the faith, heart, and practices of John Wesley and the early Methodists, we can rediscover the best parts of our own hearts and churches, and in so doing we might help spark a revival of Christianity in our time." Tickets will be sold from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the reception area and at noon outside the sanctuary on February 5 and 12, or can be purchased from any Troop 1 member. Lunches will be available for pick-up in the snack area of the gym. Limited walk-up lunches will be available, so buy a ticket to be sure you get a meal! Register athensfirstumc.org/registration Beth Dickinson Spiritual Life Retreat March ONE Student Ministries is taking a Spiritual Life Retreat (SLR) this March for youth in grades SLR begins on Friday evening, March 17, and ends on Sunday afternoon, March 19. This retreat takes place at Camp Glisson, in Dahlonega, Ga., and includes worship, small group discussions, and enriching opportunities for spiritual growth.
