Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. We remember the prophets and priests, the ministers and teachers who have taught us the way of God: Teachers of the faith, we remember you. We remember our grandparents and parents, aunts and uncles, those who have gone before us in our lifetime: Family of our faith, we remember you. 9 The Steeple All Saints Sunday Today we celebrate All Saints Day, when we remember and honor those saints who have gone before us. We will light a candle and ring a bell for those in our congregation who have passed away since this day last year. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son, Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. College Care Packages Last Day Today is the last day for our college care packages! You can drop off items and empty shoe boxes in marked collection bins in the youth hallway this morning. Please stick to bringing in these items: cookies, candy, granola bars, poptarts, bags of ground coffee, boxes of tea, ballpoint pens, mechanical pencils, sticky notes, highlighters, and index cards. If you would like your college student to receive a care package, please the name and school address of your student to Laney Jones today! We will meet in Hancock Hall immediately following the 11:00 a.m. service. At 12:00 p.m. a light lunch will be served. The training will begin at 12:30 p.m. and conclude by 2:30 p.m. There will be an additional 10-minute session required for volunteers interested in becoming Level 3 volunteers (babysitting, transportation, and Care Connection positions that work one-on-one with children). When you register, you will create a profile that will serve as your application to become part of one of our Foster Care/ Care Connection Teams. 11 Calling All Military Families Within our church family are military families mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins who have a family member who is actively serving in our military. The Congregational Care Ministry would like to extend our care to these families. We have identified 24 military families within our church family and displayed their photos in the library hallway. We want to speak to them, ask about their active duty family member, offer support, and of course, pray for them. Is someone in your family serving in the military? We would like to add you to the rolls of our Military Family Hall of Fame. We want to show our appreciation for all of our military families who sacrifice so much to protect us. Let us know who you are and who in your family is serving our country so that we can be more aware of your sacrifice. Church office Carole Langley carolelangley@charter.net GriefShare: Surviving the Holidays GriefShare: Surviving the Holidays is a helpful, encouraging seminar for people facing the holidays after the death of a loved one. The seminar features video interviews with counselors, grief experts, and others who offer practical and honest suggestions about a variety of topics, including what to do about traditions and other changes, being prepared for surprising emotions that may hit over the holidays, and how to handle potentially awkward moments. Those who attend will receive a Survival Guide filled with practical tips, encouraging words, journaling ideas, and exercises for daily help through the holiday season. This seminar will be facilitated by Martha Aenchbacher. Please join us on November 12 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Hancock Hall. 12 Interfaith Thanksgiving Service The Interfaith Clergy Partnership of Greater Athens (ICPGA)is hosting an interfaith Thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 19, at 4:30 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the UGA Tate Center. Members of our Sanctuary Choir will be participating in the ecumenical choir. The service will be followed by a reception. Parking at Tate Center parking deck will be free. WRFC Radio Broadcast Just a reminder that throughout the UGA football season, WRFC will broadcast the 8:30 a.m. sermon live. A recording of the 11:00 a.m. service will play at 12:00 p.m. Poinsettias Purchase poinsettias in honor or memory of a loved one through the church office. The flowers will be placed in the sanctuary by the Flower Guild on Sunday, December 17, and a booklet listing all of those participating will be available in the narthex. The flowers may be picked up after the 11:00 a.m. worship service the same day. Orders with payment may be made at the church office or by mail. Orders must be made no later than November 27. We are partnering with local non-profit agencies to provide gifts for children through Salvation Army Angel Tree and families through Project Safe. This is a special time designed to engage the hearts and minds of all ages as we look toward Christmas. Enjoy a pancake breakfast including pancakes with toppings, bacon, eggs, and fruit from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. After breakfast, experience an interactive worship service together at 9:45 a.m. Please register online for the pancake breakfast to facilitate planning and preparation. Often these families receive little to no advance warning before welcoming a child into their home. The Ark s goal is to pack 200 Family Placement Packs this December, and we are serving as a drop-off location. We will be collecting the following items: children s books, games, diapers, baby wipes, onesies, teething toys, plush toys, bibs, and bottles. 13 LOVE Community CHRISTMAS PARTY Date DECEMBER 20 Time 12:00 P.M. Location ATHENS FIRST UMC HANCOCK HALL Our plans have changed for our annual Christmas Community Meal which was scheduled for Thursday, December 14. We have the opportunity to partner with Action Ministries, First Baptist Church, Chapelwood United Methodist Church, Oconee Street United Methodist church, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals and we are excited to announce our Community Christmas Party! Join us for this service-centered event on Wednesday, December 20, in Hancock Hall. Together, we will serve a free meal and provide winter necessities to community guests in need. Set up for the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. and we will begin serving the meal at 12:00 p.m. Although this new event will take the place of our annual Christmas Community Meal, we look forward to continuing the tradition of coming together and serving our neighbors for the Christmas season.
