2 Welcome We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. 9 The Steeple PLEASE JOIN US FOR S U N D A Y S I N Summer of CELEBRATION J U N E A N D J U L Y WORSHIP 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. HOLY COMMUNION CHAPEL 8:30 a.m. SUNDAY SCHOOL 10:00 a.m. We have experienced many changes and challenges this year, not the least of which has been the absence of our beloved Senior Minister. As we enter into summer, we find that this is a time to come together and celebrate with our church family. We have much to give thanks to God for, and so during the months of June and July, we will be offering a Summer of Celebration. The most important thing for you to note is that our service times will change for each Sunday during June and July. We will offer two service times, at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Sunday school classes will meet at 10:00 a.m. In addition, we will offer Holy Communion in the chapel at 8:30 a.m. each Sunday. We pray that each of us will embrace this opportunity to come together with our community of faith, to link arms with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and to celebrate the many blessings the Lord has bestowed on us during this time. 7

Building Committee Update You may remember Church Council announcing and launching a study of the Saye building and property by forming a building committee in December Jill Bateman, the Chairperson of the Building Committee, has shared an update with the congregation. Learn More athensfirstumc.org/buildingcommittee The Ark Thank You The Ark sends a huge thank you to Athens First United Methodist Church for adopting the most moms and winning their congregational challenge with the Adopt-A-Mom program this Mother's Day! The Ark delivered flowers to over 200 unsuspecting moms. What a blessing! Thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ this Mother's Day! 8 New Staff Member We would like to welcome Tona Moyers to the Athens First United Methodist staff. Tona is our new Receptionist. Tona was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. She relocated to Watkinsville in November 2016 so that she could live closer to family. Tona enjoys traveling, music, and getting together with friends and family. She is excited to join the Community Bible Study group as a Core Group Leader starting in August Tona is grateful to be a part of the Athens First United Methodist team and feels that God has blessed her by placing her here. 12 Seamless Women s Study Join Susie Thrasher in a unique seven-week Bible study on Wednesday mornings. Seamless by Angie Smith is a sweeping overview of the Bible and a way of understanding it as one complete story. Each week of study features key information that ties all of scripture together into the seamless truth of the gospel message. All women are invited to join. This year we are excited for our kids at Vacation Bible School to help other kids by donating money to The United Methodist Children s Home! The Children s Home works hard to keep families together, and to find safe, nurturing homes for hurting children. Each day we will encourage and challenge our VBS participants to bring in money and celebrate the money raised the day before. The proceeds from our VBS t-shirt sales will also go towards our final donation to the Children s Home. Please begin helping your child think of ways that they can raise money to help. Let s see what a difference our kids can make as they work together to help the kids of The United Methodist Children s Home! Instead of always looking for Sack Lunch Ministry Our ongoing Sunday morning Sack Lunch Ministry meets every Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. to distribute 40 lunches to our neighbors in the community. We are in need of volunteers this summer for this wonderful ministry. If you would like serve by preparing and/or distributing lunches this summer, register online or contact Betsy or Mary Young. The group will return Friday, June 2, to offer a Home Concert at 5:00 p.m. in Hancock Hall. Everyone is invited to come to hear the choir sing and share stories about the places they have been. Smart Lunch, Smart Kid ensures that these children are fed in the summer and on school breaks. Please join us every Wednesday, beginning June 14, as we partner with Action Ministries to provide lunch to our neighborhood children. Two teams will be sent to two neighborhoods to play, encourage, and build relationships! Please join us as we serve our neighbors and transform Athens by sharing God s love. For a consignor fee of $10, consignors can sell as many items as they would like, while making sixty percent of all earnings and forty percent going towards supporting foster care. This is a great way to make extra money, get rid of children s things you no longer have a use for, and support a great cause! In addition, all consignors are invited to shop at our preview sale, Thursday, August 3. If you would like to consign at this year's sale, please register online to receive your tags and begin preparing for the sale. Contact Betsy or Mary Claire for more information. Donations As spring cleaning commences, consider donating your gently used children s items to the sale including both warm and cold weather clothing, uniforms, and other miscellaneous children's items. All proceeds from this year s sale will go to support foster care in Athens and surrounding communities. Please bring all donated items to Betsy's or Mary Claire s office. Contact Betsy or Mary Claire if you have any questions. Volunteer As we prepare for the Children's Consignment Sale, we have many needs for volunteers! Tagging Tuesdays will be every Tuesday in July (except July 4); this is a time where we sort, organize, and tag donations to prepare for the sale. We also need volunteers the week of the sale, to help with everything from set up before the sale, to being a cashier during the sale, and to clean up after the sale!
