2 Welcome We re glad you re here! Thank you for joining us today. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804, when our church was formed to minister to the Native American and European settlers in Athens. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community. If you are unable to attend worship in person, each Sunday our 11:00 a.m. service is broadcast on WRFC 960 AM, and our 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. services are live-streamed on our website at athensfirstumc.org/webcast. Nursery Our nursery is available for infants through four-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m. 12:15 p.m. The nursery area is located on the first floor of the building, off the Washington Street entrance. Children Worship activity bags (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the narthex and by the south entrance of the sanctuary. Children s Church is held for children in kindergarten through second grade and follows the Children s Message during 11:00 a.m. worship all Sundays except for Communion Sundays. Sunday School We offer Sunday School for all ages, kindergarten through adult, each Sunday from 9:45 10:45 a.m. For a list of adult Sunday School classes and locations, visit athensfirstumc.org/ adultsundayschool. Connect We are blessed to have a large congregation and because of this we offer many programs and ministries. It can be overwhelming trying to decide where to get involved. If you would like a buddy to guide you along this process please notify a Helper. Helpers serve as part of our Welcome Ministry team. Look for them in the narthex or near the altar. You can also contact a Helper through our website athensfirstumc.org/helper. Another great way to learn about the life of our church is through attending a Newcomer Orientation held every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11 a.m. We also encourage you to visit our website, athensfirstumc.org, for information about our ministries, to register for events, and to listen to sermons from our sermon archive. 10 Baptisms On September 21 Flora Mae Crisler received the Sacrament of Baptism in our sanctuary. Flora is the daughter of Ansley and Geoffrey Crisler. On September 21 Casen Matthew Hassemer received the Sacrament of Baptism in our sanctuary. Casen is the son of Krystie and Gavin Hassemer. The Elijah Project ONE Student Ministries is excited to begin our second year of an inter-generational prayer ministry called The Elijah Project. Through the partnership of youth, college students, and adult church members and consistent, expectant prayer, we anticipate seeing God move in our church in a new and powerful way, and we invite you to participate! Come to the gym any Sunday morning now through October 5 from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. We will have stations in the gym where amazing team members will help parents create their account or rehearse checking in. Refreshments will be provided. Parents should come to the gym after they drop their children off. This check-in system will begin later this fall. In 1940, the Federal Council of Churches endorsed World Communion Sunday and began to promote it to Christian churches worldwide. We will be celebrating World Communion Sunday with participants in worship from REACH International, our international student ministry. During our service communion liturgy will be read in several different languages and prayers in worship will be from a world. Bigger Vision Charity Dinner October 2 The third annual charity dinner benefiting Bigger Vision is Thursday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Hancock Hall at Athens First United Methodist Church. All proceeds will benefit the Bigger Vision Community Shelter as they prepare to serve the homeless for their sixteenth year. Bigger Vision is a mission partner of Athens First United Methodist Church. Reserve tickets by phone, Betsy Butler betsy@athensfirstumc.org World Communion Sunday October 5 World Communion Sunday is a celebration observed by several Christian denominations, taking place on the first Sunday of every October, that promotes Christian unity and ecumenical cooperation. The tradition originated in the Shadyside Presbyterian Church in 1933, was adopted throughout the US Presbyterian Church in 1936,and Venture Crew BBQ Fundraiser October 5 On October 5, Crew 1 will have a smoked pork BBQ fundraiser in support of their trip to Philmont, New Mexico in Summer Plates will contain smoked chopped pork BBQ (prepared by Marcus Fechheimer and Jim Timberlake), pickle, apple sauce, coleslaw, bread, and a fortune cookie. Scouts will be selling tickets at $9 per plate the next two Sundays. Plates will be available in the serving area after morning worship on October 5. Thanks for supporting our Venture Crew 1. Erika Bates erika@athensfirstumc.org Host Week for Interfaith Hospitality Network October 5-12 We will be hosting Interfaith Hospitality Network October 5 through 12. Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) provides services and coordinates temporary housing for displaced families in local host churches. During our host week volunteers are needed in a variety of ways, including THE STEEPLE 9

12 driving the (IHN) van, spending time with guests (both overnight and in the evening), and providing dinner. Circles are comprised of women who come together for encouragement, Bible study, and service. This new circle will be built of woman from all ages and stages of life. An informational meeting will be on Tuesday, October 7 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Hull Dining Room. Any woman interested in joining this new Circle is welcome to attend. Cake donations are needed for the Cake Walk. It would be great if every international student ended up taking a cake home as an expression of our love and hospitality! If you plan to contribute a cake, please contact Lynn Bryant. Cakes may be dropped off at the reception desk by noon that Friday, October 17. Please wrap your cake on a disposable plate and be sure to include your name, phone number, and address. Additionally, volunteers are needed to provide crock pots full of chili and to help serve. Lynn Bryant lynn@athensfirstumc.org Route 56 Helpers Needed for the Fall Festival Children s Music Ministry Parent Night October 8 Family and friends of the children s music ministry have the opportunity to see how we are learning to Shine Your Light in our activities this fall. This is your chance to watch our precious little ballerinas and our new worship arts drama class to see the exciting things going on in your children s lives on a weekly basis. For 3s, 4s, and kindergarten the schedule and locations are the same as usual. Grades 1-4 will all meet upstairs in the Amphitheater at 4:30 p.m. for a performance by our drama classes and then go to the Chapel at 5:15 p.m. to Route 56 is excited to serve at our Children s Fall Festival. Route 56 helpers will assist in running games, face painting, serving refreshments, and helping with other activities. Fall Festival is October 19 at the Parrish farm. Registration and a brief training session for Route 56 helpers are required. Open Road and Octane will NOT meet that night. Registration deadline is October 9. 13 Desserts for REACH International Friday Nights The international students really enjoy homemade desserts at their Friday night Bible study. This is a simple way to serve our international students! If you are willing to provide a dessert for 30 students on a Friday night, please sign up for a date online. You may also want to include a recipe with your dessert so the students can try it themselves later. Most don t know how to bake but are eager to learn.
