There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated 38 the world was not worthy of them. New Arrivals Congratulations to Katie and Mark Day on the birth of their son, Holt Lendon, on August 7. Friendship Partner Training Today Please join us on Sunday, August 18 or September 8, at 6:30 p.m. in room 258 to explore the possibility of befriending an international student through our church s International Friendship Partner Program. We ask that you keep the entire Preschool community: children, parents, teachers, staff, and board in your hearts this week! Prayer Shawl Ministry August 21 All are welcome to join a group of expert, novice, and beginning knitters and crocheters as they create prayer shawls. Completed prayer shawls are prayed over by the group, and given to those who are grieving or have special needs. The group meets weekly on Wednesday evenings beginning on August 28 on a come as you can basis between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. in the parlor at the top of the elevator near the Hancock Street entrance. 11 Congregational Care Training Event August 21 During times of joy or crisis, we in the Athens First United Methodist Church family seek to provide one another loving care and encouragement in a variety of ways. Contact: Martha Aenchbacher martha@athensfirstumc.org Beth Moore Bible Study: Living Beyond Yourself August 21 Come experience the power and promise of the Holy Spirit as we explore the Fruit of the Spirit! We ll dig deep into the original languages of the Old and New Testaments to show us what the writings of the Bible truly say regarding the fruit of the Spirit, as described by Paul and others in the context of Galatians 5:22-23, in addition to related Biblical texts ranging from Genesis through the epistles. A 10-week study with two sessions offered, begins August 21 at 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-2:30 p.m. Cost is $17. Register with Janet Strickland. 12 Jesus Calling Express Study August 28 Come and meet with a group of women to talk about the Jesus Calling devotional and how God is moving in your life. No preparation is necessary, come as you are able. Please bring your Bible and copy of Jesus Calling. If you do not have a Jesus Calling devotional you may buy one for $8, or we can provide a copy. 13 MILITARY FAMILY QUESTIONNAIRE Measure of a Man Men s Bible Study September 4 All men are welcome to the men s Bible study The Measure of a Man, Twenty Attributes of a Godly Man by Gene Getz. This study meets Wednesdays, September 4-November 20, 6-7:30 p.m. at Athens First Methodist Church and is led by Chris Caldwell. Cost is $15 and pre-registration is requested (online or at the desk). This Bible study contains four heart-to-heart messages designed to help women embrace the Biblical mandate to love and to develop skills for loving others. The cost is $7 and childcare is provided.
