When we gather together, the Spirit of the Lord meets us, and through grace, brings us into a community of love, hope, and peace. Let us pray. Almighty God, in the abundance of your many gifts, grant us grace to fill one another s lives with love. Redeem, restore, and remold us until we are made new. Transform our daily bread into the bread of life, and the cup that we drink into the cup of salvation. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Creator God, holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. He prayed that we might be one as he is one with you, and he asked that we might be known by the love we have for one another. On the night... 2 We celebrate your love for us in Jesus Christ. Proclamation Anthem Lyrics Give thanks to God on high for saints of other days, whose hope it was to live and die in love s consuming blaze, for Christ and His kingdom, his glory and His praise. Their vision long fulfilled our prayer is still the same: upon their work of faith to build, their word of truth proclaim, for Christ and His kingdom, and for his holy name. New tasks today are ours who serve a world in pain, new calls to challenge all our pow rs of heart and hand and brain, for Christ and His kingdom, while life and breath remain. Give thanks to God on high for all the future sends, in praise of Christ to live and die who calls His servants friends, for Christ and His kingdom, whose glory never ends! Praise God the source of all our gifts; praise Jesus Christ whose power uplifts. Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. THE SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 14:15-21 p. 15 new testament THE SERMON The Difference You Make, Makes All The Difference Chuck Hodges Response THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION When we gather to praise God and celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion, we remember that we are people who have preferred our wills to the will of God. Accepting God s power to become new persons in Christ, let us confess our sin before God and one another. 5

8 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. services God, you call us to step out in faith, to place our lives in your hands, and to wholeheartedly commit to following you. We confess that we find it difficult to do. It is not always easy to follow where you lead to turn away from our own personal wants and desires, to let go of our safety nets and trust that you will provide for us in all things. Forgive us when we doubt you. Increase our faith. Open our eyes to see past our own interests and concerns, to your broader vision for us and for our world. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey, and set before us the way of life. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Congregation sings: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. He showed us your love and compassion by feeding the multitude. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the 6

9 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. services new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." On the day you raised him from the dead he was recognized by his disciples in the breaking of the bread, and in the power of your Holy Spirit your Church has continued in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Song Lyrics For everyone born, a place at the table, for everyone born, clean water and bread, a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing, for everyone born, a star overhead, and God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace: yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy! For woman and man, a place at the table, revising the roles, deciding the share, with wisdom and grace, dividing the power, a system that's fair, for young and for old, a place at the table, a voice to be heard, a part in the song, the hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled, for young and for old, the right to belong, for everyone born, a place at the table, to live without fear, and simply to be, to work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right to be free. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Congregation sings: Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. The Invitation This table is open to all who confess Jesus as the Christ and seek to follow Christ s way. Come to this sacred table not because you must, but because you may. Come not because you are fulfilled, but because in your emptiness you stand in need of God s mercy and assurance. Come not to express an opinion, but to seek a presence and to pray for a spirit. Come to this table then, sisters and brothers, as you are. Partake and share. It is spread for you and me that we might again know that God has come to us, shared our common lot, and invited us to join in God s Kingdom. Receiving of the Elements of Communion and Consecration of Our Gifts All are invited to commune at Christ s table and to bring your pledge card forward. If you need to be served in your pew, please call this to the attention of an usher. All elements at both stations are gluten-free. The Music During Communion For Everyone Born arr. 10 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. services *THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Most gracious God, we give you thanks for every good gift we have received through the bounty of your love. Guide us along the path of giving that binds us together and connects us with you, the Great Giver. Accept the stewardship of our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness for the work of your Church, so that in every act of mercy and justice, we become conduits of your love. Everything we are, and everything we have, comes as a gift from your gracious hand a gift which continues to renew us. Accept, O God, the tokens of our love and signs of our pledge and commitment which we have brought forward this day. You are a God of abundance. Our gifts and offerings can expand and grow beyond our understanding, just like five loaves and two fish can feed a crowd of five thousand. In thanksgiving for our life and for the life of Athens First United Methodist Church, we give glory to You, Lord God, the Source of all being; to Jesus Christ, Eternal Word; and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. *THE HYMN Loaves Were Broken, Words Were Spoken beach spring Loaves were broken, words were spoken by the Galilean shore. Jesus, Bread of Life from heaven, was their food forevermore. By your body broken for us, by your wine of life outpoured, Jesus, feed again your people. Be our host, our Life, our Lord. By the loaves you break and give us, send us in your name to share. Bread for which the millions hunger, words that tell your love and care. By your body broken for us, by your wine of life outpoured, Jesus, feed again your people. Be our host, our Life, our Lord. Sending Forth *THE BLESSING AND CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Blest Be the Tie That Binds dennis Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. *THE POSTLUDE Joyful, Joyful Paul Manz 8

11 The Steeple "Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children." Matthew 14:
