Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. Accepting God s power to become new persons in Christ, let us confess our sin before God and one another. Together we confess that God unites us in faith. Together we come to 5

8 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. services know the height, and the breadth, and the depth of the love of Christ. Together we are built up to the full stature of Christ. Together we know and bear one another s burdens. We admonish one another. We comfort one another. We suffer with one another. We need one another. We build up one another. Together we pray. Together we serve God in this world. Together we fight against all which may threaten or hinder this unity. Thanks be to God. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. When we were lost and afraid, in the bounty of your love, you delivered us from the prison of our fears, and offered us hope and a new beginning. Even when we turned inward and rejected your ways, you reached out to us anew, assured us of our place at your table, and taught us the joy of turning toward love. In the words of the prophets, you extended your mercy and grace by calling us back to faithful living, and by showing us the blessing of radical hospitality. And in the fullness of time, you sent your Son, Christ Jesus, to reveal the depth of your saving love for all people. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. And so in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Come to this table then, sisters and brothers, as you are. Partake and share. It is spread for you and me that we might again know that God has come to us, shared our common lot, and invited us to join in God s Kingdom. 12 Souper Suppers Join us as we open our doors and hearts to love and serve our neighbors by inviting them into our church for a warm meal and fellowship. We host Souper Suppers in Hancock Hall every Thursday until the end of April. Individuals, Sunday school classes, UMW Circles, families, or any small group are welcome to serve in several different ways: Prepare a meal to feed our neighbors. Work with children in the gym or at our Kaleidoscope music program at 3:30 p.m. Greet community members, help in the Souper Suppers Store, or serve in our dining room at 4:30 p.m. Serve with our cleanup crew at 5:30 p.m. If you are interested in serving or preparing a meal, please contact Betsy or Sarah Beth to get involved! In this study, we will explore how God created us to seek after Him a God who desires to be found and known. In this lifelong quest of faith, learn to develop your intimacy with Him and embrace the adventure that comes with living a life for God. All women are invited to join. This thirteen-week group will meet on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. in Room 100. This faith-based curriculum features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. This group is for men grieving the death of a family member or friend. Please register online so that we will have materials prepared for you. There is a $20 fee to pay for your workbook. You may pay that fee online when you register, or bring a check with you to the group meeting. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. The study will meet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7:00 p.m., beginning February 12 in room 229. The study is free and open to all. Register online. 13 Disciplines Devotional Bible Study Disciplines Devotional Bible Study is an outstanding way to stay connected to God. As a small group, we read scripture, share thoughts on the daily devotion, and pray. This ongoing group is open to all and meets on Mondays, from 1:15-2:15 p.m., in room 200. We invite you to join at any time throughout the school year. The weekly scripture readings include passages from the Old Testament, New Testament, and Psalms from the Revised Common Lectionary. Vacation Bible School takes place June 10-13, Robin Stewart robin@athensfirstumc.org April Allen allenapril35@gmail.com Oberammergau Passion Play Trip Join us for this one-of-a-kind trip and experience the Oberammergau Passion Play in July After the Black Plague, rampant across Europe, left their small village, the grateful people of Oberammergau promised God that they would show their gratitude by putting on a passion play. More than 380 years later, they are still upholding this promise by performing the Passion Play once every ten years! In addition to Oberammergau, Germany, the trip will include stops in Innsbruck and Salzburg, Austria and Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany.
