1 THE COMMUNICATOR OFFICE HOURS: Monday - Thursday from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm and Friday from 8:00 am - 12:00 noon Church Phone: Church Fax: Website: BEAVER RIDGE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Catherine C. Nance, Minister... Church: , Ext Cell: cnance@beaverridgeumc.com JUNE 15, 2012 I VE BEEN HEALED! When we hear someone talk about healing, we usually get a little uncomfortable as images of TV evangelists slapping people in the head come to mind. Occasionally we will hear someone say the doctors said there is no trace of cancer; they can t explain it, but I know I ve been healed. We respond with Praise the Lord but then wonder how come our brother or aunt still has cancer when folks have been holding them in prayer for months. I am always struck by the sign on an office door at one of the hospitals: OUTCOMES MAN- AGEMENT. I am sure that is hospital business lingo for patient care after one leaves the hospital. But we often see our prayers as OUTCOMES MANAGEMENT. Dear God, this is how I would like for things to turn out... The United Methodist Book of Worship helps us understand healing from a Biblical perspective. The word healing comes from the same word for salvation. When Christians talk of healing, we mean being restored spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. The Service of Healing in our worship book includes prayers, confession, hymns, and silence. There is no hitting anyone on the forehead. There is opportunity for laying on of hands which simply means doing what we normally do when we pray with someone: we touch them on the shoulder or hold their hand. Our Tuesday study group has been reading about Christian practices and the first one we discussed was healing. Some were surprised to know that we have A Service of Healing in our tradition and there were others who have attended such services and shared how meaningful it was to them. Part of my job responsibility is to offer prayers for healing. I would like to invite you to join with me in A Service of Healing on a Sunday night, July 8 at 7:00 pm in the chapel. You don t have to be sick to come! It is an opportunity to pray for others as well as yourself. I will leave copies of the service in the library and on the table outside my office so you can see what to expect at this kind of worship service. It is very quiet and very reverent. The hoped for outcome is restoration (healing) in all of its layers. For my own personal worship, I used to attend an Episcopal church each Wednesday at noon that offered a Service of Prayer and Healing. It was the same liturgy every week with communion. Those who wanted to say the name of a loved one (or their own name) could do so. Some went to the altar for anointing (a little oil is rubbed on the forehead). There was something very comforting about saying the same words each week, seeing the same twenty or so people with a few new ones each week. I would say it was very healing. Feel free to ask me about this or invite a friend. I will offer the service again on August 12 and September 9. Catherine

A summer study group is meeting on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 in Room 209. It is geared for adults who feel as if they "don't know anything" about the Bible. The focus is on CONTENT rather than history and development of the Bible. Come and join us! SUMMER OPEN GYM!!! Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:30!! Gym Night is open to all! 3 PAGE 3 THE COMMUNICATOR JUNE 15, 2012 Project Crossroads - Marion, VA June If you have ever wanted to participate in a mission trip but felt like you did not have the time, this trip is for you! We will leave from BRUMC on Wednesday afternoon and return on Saturday. We usually do some kind of construction work such as building a handicap ramp at someone s home, working on a roof, or some remodeling inside a home. We have a wonderful place to stay the Project House for Project Crossroads. There is a minimal cost. If you are interested in helping or would like more information, please contact Joe Dooley at dkj221@comcast.net or sign up on the Missions bulletin board across from the church office. The work done at Project Crossroads is vital to the people in the Marion, VA area. Do You Have a Pick-Up Truck? We are needing more volunteers who can drive to Second Harvest (in Maryville) to pick up food for our food pantry. We go once a month on a weekday morning. Volunteers back the truck up to the dock; workers there help load. You bring it back to our pantry and unload. We also need 'strong backs' who can meet drivers here at the pantry and help unload. If you are able and willing, please call Judy Shaw at Food Pantry Offering Suggested Food Pantry donations for June are dry cereal and packages of cornbread mix. Items may be placed in the food basket located in the coffee hour/office hallway. United Methodist Women In Action Members of Dorcas Circle had a good outing to Wesley House last month, delivering all the wonderful items our church members donated. The people that work and volunteer at Wesley House were so happy to receive the paper towels, toilet tissue, lotions and other donations for the senior s Bingo prizes. The seniors who go there for lunch and Bingo in the winter months are so appreciative of anything that is done for them. Dorcas Circle is now gathering donations of snacks for the children that attend the summer program at Wesley House. Approximately 75 children attend five days a week all summer! We hope to collect juice (the small plastic bottles are perfect), packages of crackers, cookies and other snacks. It is wonderful that there is a safe place like Wesley House that can open their doors to these children daily for supervised care. Please put your donations in the baskets marked Wesley House located in the hallway and to the left of the office. We will collect items all summer long, taking a basket to Wesley House as soon as it is full. We hope we have to make several trips!! Dorcas Circle delivers donations to Wesley House s senior adult program.

4 PAGE 4 THE COMMUNICATOR JUNE 15, 2012 To Our Church Family, To say, "Thank You" doesn't seem to adequately express how grateful we are for your outpouring of love onto our family. We are simply blown away by the generosity of Beaver Ridge UMC. We don't know why we were surprised. This church has always come together for "family". When Thomas' needs became what they are today we thought we would just be a 2 car family if we wanted to go anywhere altogether. Thanks to your generosity, we are on our way to traveling TOGETHER. We thank you and thank God FOR you. We have been so incredibly blessed. Welcome Rev. Manning...July 24th We look forward to welcoming Rev. Glenna Manning to our pulpit on Sunday, June 24th at both the 9:00 and 11:00 services. Make sure you are here to hear! Jay and Jessica Lifford Taylor, Tatum, Tori, Tricia and Thomas 2012 May Financial Summary Total contributions to the General Budget at the end of May were $184, and the total expenses were $174, Total contributions for the Family Life Center were $62, and total expenses were $63, The General Budget account balance at the end of May was $39, and the Family Life Center account balance was $5, Thank you for your faithful support of our Church. It s History Time for Senior Beavers! Our Senior Beavers will be going to Greeneville, TN on Tuesday, June 12. Meet at the church at 9:30. 5 PAGE 5 THE COMMUNICATOR JUNE 15, 2012 Thank You for Your Generosity!! "Our church is very generous." Those are the words Jesse Kelly spoke as she and Jonah Kahm and Tori Lifford helped sort coins from the Change for Children jar. Jesse is right: You are very generous and loving and giving.
