1 THE COMMUNICATOR OFFICE HOURS: Monday - Thursday from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm and Friday from 8:00 am - 12:00 noon Church Phone: Church Fax: Website: BEAVER RIDGE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Catherine C. Nance, Minister... Church: , Ext Cell: cnance@beaverridgeumc.com MARCH 15, 2012 CALL TO ACTION Matthew 5:43 "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shall love thy neighbor..." Welcome to your new "Call To Action" column. Each month we will tell you about this exciting new activity happening throughout the Methodist churches around the world. You may be asking, "What is Call To Action?" The United Methodist church continues to be a spiritual influence in the world for the Gospel. Essential to its ministry are healthy, vital congregations. To that end your Church Council established five Call to Action goals for the year. Each goal will help our church reach out to others both locally and around the world. The first goal set by your Church Council is to increase our average Sunday attendance...seeing our attendance grow each week, even if by only one. Second, to increase the number of professions of faith within our church. Third, to increase the number of small groups we have in order to provide for the different needs of our members and neighbors. This can be a new Sunday School class or a small group study. Fourth, to increase the number of people who participate in our various outreach programs and missions. This is not just going on a mission trip far away, but helping with things such as the Second Harvest food give away or the Food Pantry. And our fifth and final goal is to increase our giving from our annual budget to various mission programs. You gave over $60,000 to missions work last year (outstanding!!). Each dollar was needed and was very much appreciated by those in need! We want to increase that amount. Over the next several months we will explain each of these five goals more in-depth. We will explain the numbers that your Church Council established, how we are doing and, most importantly, what you can do to help. But let's pause here and clarify that it is not just about reaching a goal or achieving a number that was set at the start of the year. The whole program is about creating a vital congregation that is reaching out to others that they may know Jesus Christ as their Savior; to know that there is comfort in His arms for all those who are suffering; to know that others want to help those in need; to know they are loved by Jesus...all those in Karns and around the world...our neighbors. I am excited about what we, together, can do! Stay tuned! In our next article we will explain the first goal that was established and what you can do to help Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church shine for Christ. Steve Lane Church Council Call to Action Coordinator
2 PAGE 2 THE COMMUNICATOR MARCH 15, 2012 Beth Sampsel joins us with her flute on March 25 at our traditional service. She will play the prelude and offertory and will accompany the choir as they sing "Celtic Communion." This anthem is a lovely arrangement of Bunessan, a traditional Gaelic melody. (Yes, you will recognize it!) The music at the traditional service on Palm Sunday (April 1) includes an anthem of celebration (Jesus riding into Jerusalem) and an anthem of somber mood, preparing us for Holy Week. At our Maundy Thursday service (7:00 pm) Jo Ludwig will sing "By My Side" (from Godspell). This poignant song reflects Mary's concern as Jesus prepares to leave to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. At our Good Friday service (Noon) Jo will sing the beautiful spiritual, "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?". Easter Sunday brings celebration with trumpeters. First a fanfare, then the congregation will join in an Easter hymn. Later in the service the choir will sing another anthem celebrating the risen Christ. Passion/Palm Sunday, April 1 This is the day we celebrate Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The children are invited to help begin the service by walking in and waving palm branches. Children need to be lined up in the narthex at 8:50 am for the early service and 10:50 am for the late service if they would like to participate. Maundy Thursday, April 5 at 7:00 pm Maundy comes from the Latin word meaning 'commandment.' On this evening we remember Jesus washing the disciples' feet and telling them he gives them 'a new commandment: that they love one another.' We also participate in Holy Communion remembering the Last Supper. A nursery will be provided during the service for toddlers and infants. Good Friday April 6 at 12:00 noon Sanctuary Good Friday is the day we remember the crucifixion of Jesus. This is a very quiet service with scripture readings and prayer. We 'strip the altar' (remove all the paraments, candles, etc. from the altar) and drape the cross inside and outside in black. Easter Sunday, April 8 Sunrise Service at 7:00 am Randy Creswell will lead us in worship at the cross in the front yard. Bring flowers to place on the outside cross. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on April 7! The morning will begin at 9:00 with a delicious pancake breakfast prepared by the United Methodist Men. At 9:30 the children will be entertained by Danny the Magician. The Easter Egg Hunt will begin after the magic show. This event is open to all children through 5th grade. Bring your Easter basket and join the fun! Worship Services at 9:00 and 11:00 am Nursery provided at both services. Easter Candy Needed Individually-wrapped candy is being collected to fill the plastic eggs for our upcoming Easter Egg Hunt. Donations may be placed in the designated bin in the church office hallway.
