1 NOVEMBER 2016 Dear Friends, Riches gotten quickly will dwindle, but those who acquire them gradually become wealthy. Proverbs 13:11 Have you ever found yourself wishing for a bolt from the blue, something so improbably lucky that you'd be set for life? Especially without working for it? If only this time you'd win the lottery! If only there was a coin, or a piece of furniture, or an old book that you would discover in your home that was worth far more than you ever imagined! If only, while digging around in the back yard, you came across something more valuable than your wildest dreams! One reason people dream of things like this is because every now and then it actually happens. Never mind all those depressing statistics about how quickly overnight millionaires go bankrupt. Why can't money just fall into our laps? Which leads me to a California couple, whom we will call John and Mary, who noticed something odd sticking out of the ground in the yard. It was an old can. They dug it up. Then they found another. And another. There were eight cans filled with nineteenth-century gold coins. Real gold coins. Real, rare gold coins. Later, John said, "I thought any second an old miner with a mule was going to appear." The couple contacted a firm that specialized in American coins, and the firm quickly confirmed that the eight cans were filled with over 1,400 authentic, well-preserved US coins dated between 1874 and The coins were worth over ten million dollars! According to a report by Rube Vives in the Los Angeles Times, the couple "said they plan to keep some of the coins and sell others...with the intention of donating part of the proceeds to charity." Some of the rest would be used to pay off their home. Mary was quoted as saying, "Whatever answers you seek, they might be right at home. The answer to our difficulties was there under our feet for years." It's a wonderful story so why don't all of us start digging in our backyards? Of course, it's because this kind of thing almost never happens. As fun as it might be to dream, the Scriptures remind us that when it comes to earning all we can, nothing is more certain to produce riches than hard work. Join us this season as we consider John Wesley's instructions to the people of faith as he suggests what we can do to be successful in our Christian walk and in life. Pastor Larry

6 PAGE 6 THE COMMUNICATOR NOVEMBER 2016 Y o u t h N e w s! October was busy and wonderful over in SWATland! We had our first staycation since we've welcomed our 6 th graders. It was exciting to meet new friends, as well as catch up with friends we've been missing! Twenty-eight youth participated during the weekend! We enjoyed our small group time, as well as worshipping with the Blank Paiges, having lessons, playing laser tag, lifesized foosball and mario kart, grog, and underground church, unloading pumpkins, watching UT football, and eating delicious food. We appreciate Tim Brown, Randy Creswell, Julie Graham, Kelly Kelly, Devon Graham, Paige Lann, Jordan Graham, Zach Field, Ethan Porter, and Beth Field for coming by to help! The youth are collecting items for flood victims in North Carolina. If you have any donations you can bring, please leave them in Lisa's office or at the bottom of the stairs in the FLC. Anything and everything will be helpful...clothes, furniture, towels, pillows, etc. The youth are raking and running on Nov. 12 th! Meet at the church at 1:00 to go to lunch, and then we'll be going to homes of church members to rake their yards! If you know of someone in need, let Lisa know! We'll return to the church by 6:00. On November 13 th, it's shower time. The youth are hosting a church shower for the FLC kitchen. Check the registry at Bed, Bath and Beyond, or pick up a Target gift card. Refreshments will be served and fun is ensured for all! Join us from 2:00-4:00! On Saturday, November 19 th, we're THINKING THANKSGIVING! Come to the Education Bldg. to get Thanksgiving boxes ready for delivery to those in need. On November 30 th we'll be decorating the youth room! Grab your egg nog and cookies and bring a stocking! Let's make The Base look like the North Pole. The youth will also be collecting money to go Christmas shopping for the less fortunate! We will be having a middle school vs. high school showdown this year! Let's see who can raise the most! Last year our boys and girls had a showdown and the boys won, so they'll be enjoying a boys night out on November 20 th right after Youth. It's time to start thinking about Christmas Staycation on December 16-18! Sign up by November 30 th to make sure you get a Secret Swata! Thank you to everyone who joined us for lunch on October 16! We made almost $700! We're so thankful to our church family for their support! All donations go to our amazing youth! Also much appreciation to Kasey Kahm, Kelly Kelly, Lori Hopper, Jesse Kelly and all the parents who brought desserts! You all made the meal a major success! Resurrection will also be here before we know! It will be $40 if you have helped at a fundraiser this year, or $80 if you haven't lent your services before. Resurrection is a fantastic weekend of fun! It is a conference held at the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge. We will stay at a beautiful cabin and enjoy awesome worship and sessions! There will also be free time to explore Pigeon Forge. Don't miss out on an awesome weekend January 20-22! Great job to the Blank Paiges who filled in for worship on October 23 rd! We're so proud of you for standing in front of our congregation and singing God's praises! We had a fantastic time at Central UMC! Each youth from our church was paired up with someone from Central and carved a pumpkin! Winners included a Jack the Skeleton pumpkin, an Ariel pumpkin, and a "pumpkin pie." It's almost basketball time! Our high school boys games start on November 12 th. They'll be hosted at our gym, so come by and watch our boys play! If your youth is interested in playing middle school boys or girls basketball, let Lisa know!
