2 A Message From Pastor Ben Today is like National Thanksgiving Day! We have called today Volunteer Sunday, not to give volunteers more work to do, but to say THANK YOU for all the work they have done, and continue to do. Our church has been so blessed as each and every day we have people volunteering within it, helping us to fulfil our mission to know Christ and to make Christ known. So if you are a volunteer, not only in our church, but in our wider community, I want to say THANK YOU for what you do. Without you, I believe our church, our community would not be the same as you sacrificially give of your time, talents and gifts for the glory of God. As we continue through our Being Rich in What Matter Most series we focus on being rich in good deeds, because God has blessed us with more than we need. We are rich. But we will not trust in riches, but rather in Him who richly provides. And because we have more we will not only give more, but we will also do more. My prayer this morning is for each person to see that they are not saved by good works (because we cannot earn our way into heaven doing good deeds ), but we are saved by grace, through faith in Jesus to go out and do good works. If you are not yet volunteering in our church, school or parachurch ministries, please contact us about ways that you can get involved. Otherwise THANK YOU again for all your do as a volunteer in our church, in our community, in our city and around the world. We are blessed to have you in our midst today. Funeral Service of Nikita Jade Hinsch Wednesday 6 th May The funeral of Nikita Hinsch eldest daughter of Greg and Linda, sister to Kayla and Teisha will be held at St John s Lutheran Church this Wednesday 6 th May at 10am. 3

4 Parish Women's Guild Thursday 7 th May We will meet on Thursday 7 th May at 9.00am in the St John's Hall. Pastor Ben will lead our bible study. Please bring something to talk about for our Show and Tell - "Memories". All women are welcome to attend, so if you are free, please join us. Bethany Working Bee Saturday 9 th May A working bee is to be held at Bethany on 9 th May commencing at 8 am. Many hands make the work light and the fellowship is always great. Bethany Traditional Service Sunday 10 th May at 7.30am Mother s Day Next Sunday (10 th May) is Mother s Day. We want to honour and bless all mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers, so please invite whoever it is that you need to invite along to worship and have your family photo taken with them prior to (or after) worship. We will have photographers at each of our times and locations, so make sure you make the most of Mother s Day and bless Mum with a special gift that will come from us in the following weeks, and join us to celebrate and worship the greatest gift of all God s Son, Jesus. Mother s Day Cards and Gifts Don't forget to make your mum feel special this mothers day. Take advantage of the great prices and convenience of shopping at St John's card/gift cupboard. Open every Sunday. Can you help us? We need toys! Do you have some toys sitting around your house that you don't want any more? Are they suitable for babies to four year olds? Alternatively bring them along to church and we will collect from there. Thanks. Magazines needed for Bethany Prep Children Bethany Prep classes need Women s magazines for pictures to cut out. If you have any, or know of someone who does not need them anymore, could you please bring them to Bethany Church or drop them into the school office? With thanks, Jenny Schiller What Do Cakes and Couches Have in Common? They are both great to help us relax and feel good. Our parish youth are fundraising to pay for new couches in St John's Hall. They are selling decadent, delicious, desirable cake slices for $5. This will be ongoing through April and May, so bring your $5 to St John's or pre-order (Jo or Margaret ) and we will deliver a selection to choose from, to Bethany or Grace services. Any cash donations also accepted. 4

5 Volunteering Opportunities Have you felt God leading you towards visiting and even giving Holy Communion to those people across our Parish who are unable to attend church? We are in need of people to either visit regularly (once a month or bi-monthly) or to just visit intermittently throughout the year. We are also in urgent need of people to be available to visit regularly and give Holy Communion. Please keep this important ministry in your prayers. God will equip you if you feel he is directing you to answer this call! Donations for Natural Disasters NEPAL EARTHQUAKE DISASTER ALWS ACTION LUTHERAN EMERGENCY ACTION The worst earthquake in Nepal in 80 years has left more than 2500 people dead. Many more are injured, missing or homeless. You can give emergency help straightaway through ALWS. Your help will be directed through our Lutheran (World Federation) team based in Kathmandu. High priorities are likely to include food, clean water, clothes, blankets, shelter, medical supplies and psychosocial support. ALWS has already committed $50,000 for emergency aid. 8 Financial Support for the Mission and Vision of the Church A natural response to God s love! Since you excel in so many ways in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving. I am not commanding you to do this. But I am testing how genuine your love is by comparing it with the eagerness of the other churches. (2 Corinthians 8:7-8) The Corinthian believers excelled at everything. They had faith, good preaching (speakers), much knowledge, much enthusiasm and much love. But Paul wanted them also to be leaders in giving. Giving is a natural response of love. Paul did not order the Corinthians to give, but he encouraged them to prove that their love was sincere. When you love someone, you want to give him or her your time and attention and to provide for his or her needs. Giving to God is just one way we show how much we love Him and care for others! How is our giving going? Keep an eye on the graph below. God provides for the ministry of Ipswich Lutheran Church through your tithes and offerings, so please consider how you can give to continue to help people to know Christ and make Christ known. 8
