2 A Message From Pastor Milton temple. Today, we continue our look at Haggai. The Lord of hosts sent the prophet Haggai to speak God s word to Joshua the high priest and to Zerubbabel the governor and to the people of God to begin the task of rebuilding the temple. Did the leaders and the people listen to Haggai? The answer is YES they did. Twenty three days after Haggai began speaking to them, the two leaders and the people began to rebuild the Three and half weeks have passed since the work at the temple had been renewed. However, there were signs that the people were starting to become discouraged in their work. The hard economic times was proving a strain on the people and their resolve. The Lord of hosts steps in and helps his people. He sends Haggai who addresses the issues that are discouraging the people. Haggai addresses the constant comparison between the glory of the first temple and the seemingly inferior new temple. God only knows one house, this house. Haggai encourages the people to remain strong in their resolve to rebuild the temple. He reminds them that with God s help they will finish the temple. They are to keep on persevering through discouragement. Haggai also addresses the fact that they are living in economically tough times. God promises to provide the people with the necessary funds to finish the temple. It is easy for you and I to become discouraged. It is true that we are living in testing times at the moment. God speaks to us through his word. He says to us today, take courage for I am with you. (Haggai 2:4). Not only is God with us as he was with his people during the time of Haggai, God promises to provide us with the resources that we need to continue his work here on earth. Finally, God s glory is shining through his church through his people. Today, just as in the time of Haggai, God is bringing his peace to his people. 5 Knowing Christ and Making Christ Known The Old Grandfather clock In a story told recently, an elderly couple had a small farm with a few milking cows. Their home was simple. They relied on a very old grandfather clock in the hall to wake them in time to start milking at 6:00am. When they heard the old clock strike the hour, they would count, knowing that if they heard five chimes, they could sleep longer. One morning the husband woke to hear the clock chiming. He counted four, five, six (OK time to get going). But then he heard seven, eight (he was alarmed), then eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. The old well-worn clock was faulty. The old man reached over and shook his wife s shoulder vigorously and shouted, Quick, Martha. We gotta get going. It s later than it s ever been. He was right of course. It is always later than it s ever been, always closer to Christ s return, always fewer days left to witness for the Lord. Lord, lay some soul upon my heart And love that soul through me, And may I humbly do my part To bring that soul to Thee. (Anonymous) Financial Support for the Mission and Vision of the Church Keys to Using Money Wisely Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:33) Money seen as an end in itself quickly traps us and cuts us off from both God and the needy. The key to using money wisely is to see how much we can use for God s purposes, not how much we can accumulate for ourselves. Does God s love touch your wallet? Does your money free you to help others? If so, you are storing up lasting treasures in heaven. If your financial goals and possessions hinder you from giving generously, loving others, or serving God, sell what you must to bring your life into perspective. What is REG? (Regular Electronic Giving) Regular Electronic Giving is a way that you can give: regularly and electronically (cashless). If you would like to give in this way to be able to easily give your first and your best to God, by being able to tithe in line with your pay period (weekly, fortnightly, monthly) please contact the office who can help set this up for you. 8 Buchholz Estate information Buchholz Estate funding is available for any secondary school campers who live in the LCAQD district and are unable to pay for camp registration fees. The 2016 ministry focus is young people from immigrant families with limited resources, particularly those of Asian and African origin and young people from smaller congregations with limited resources. Accordingly all applications will be considered but preference will be given to applications from these priority areas. The form is downloadable here and we encourage this to be used in conjunction with congregational support and/or family support to enable funds to be used to help more potential campers. 10 Prayer Corner Church Prayer Time A time of prayer is held at Bethany every Sunday at 8.30am. Any and all are welcome to join in with these prayer times. Prayer Points for the whole church, the flock of Christ for all who are newly baptised or confirmed for those who persecute God's people, like Saul, that they may repent for Christians who have fallen into sin, like Peter, that they may be restored to service for the nations of the world, that the good news may be heard in every land for those who are sick, disabled, or elderly, and who must be cared for by others for all Christians, that we may be fishers of people, casting out the net of the gospel Care Slip & General Parish Prayer Requests We pray that as we build our lives we build the right things not just the easy and popular things. Our lives should reflect our Lord. Lord, thank you for your provision - protection - promise that you're with us ALWAYS. Continuing prayers for the refugees throughout the world. For those suffering loss and pain, whether it be physical or mental. The many ill & infirm in our Parish - for Comfort and / or Healing as God sees fit. For an end to terrorism. Comfort for families who have lost love ones. That God will restore to us the joy of our salvation to be able to serve Him and fulfill the work to which he has called us as a member of His body, the church.
