Our bulletin publishing service will be Pilot Bulletins. With the switch to this new bulletin provider the parish will receive more color options for our bulletins, enhanced picture quality, up-grade of paper quality, laser print for clear, rich font, and several extra pages along with an up-front sign-on bonus of $ plus $ annual revenue sharing stipend to be paid to the parish in quarterly installments. The church bulletin generates revenue by the ads placed in it. In order for Pilot Bulletins to continue to provide this wonderful product, service and revenue for our parish ad space needs to be filled. You can help us fill these spots by placing an ad for your business or service or recommending a business or service that we could contact. You can either contact the parish office with that information or contact Pilot Bulletins directly (contact Ken Romano, ). Christmas Letter This year we mailed out a Christmas letter to all parishioners on our parish listing. If you didn t get one, can you please update your address in the Parish Office? If you have moved or joined the parish please let us know. In addition to sharing Christmas blessings, the letter summarized some of the goings on of our parish in the last few months. If you regularly read the bulletin, you probably already know most of what was covered, but we re trying to reach out to members of our community who are not always here and may not always see the bulletin. If you can help spread the word to your family or neighbors, that would be very helpful. Thanks Fr Paul SJ St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Celebrate the first American-born saint! St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was born in New York City in the late 1700s and raised Episcopalian. She married William Seton. Together they had five children. He fell ill, and the family moved to Italy for his health. While there, Elizabeth discovered Catholicism. Her husband eventually passed away, but God had more plans for the Seton family. Elizabeth felt a further stirring in her heart. She opened a school for girls in The calling grew. Within a year, Elizabeth had founded the Sisters of Charity, the first community for religious women established in the United States. Their work established the first Catholic school system in the country. On her feast day this January 4th, pray for our teachers and students!

4 Faith Formation Religious Education Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle January 2019 Prayer Intentions We now start the third year of urging parishioners and friends to pray for our parish and other world needs and for one another through these prayer intentions and the idea of a Parish Prayer Circle. I hope that these intentions and the commitment to pray have been a source of grace and blessing to you and to our parish, school, and world. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. The Pope Intention: Evangelization Young People That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world. 3. That our young people and all of us may find in Jesus, not harsh rules, but a call to a way of living life that is freeing and leads to a sense of purpose, direction, and an experience of being known and loved by God and invited to share love with others. Budget Envelopes We have been experiencing a large volume of parishioners not receiving their budget envelopes since making the switchover to our new vendor. We are not certain of why this is happening. There have been a few occasions that the address was correct on the former budget envelopes but not correct in the parish software we used when sending the information to the new vendor. Another problem is the new vendor's envelopes look different though still clearly marked with Our Lady of Hope Parish so people may have mistakenly thought it to be 'junk' mail and tossed them out accidentally. We are working to correct the situation. If you participate in the budget envelope program and haven't received your envelopes please call the parish office, , so we can make arrangements to get you envelopes. We are very sorry for any confusion and inconvenience this has cause. Liturgy of the Word Sundays 10:00 AM Mass St. Joseph Church January 6 th January 20 th February 3 rd March 3 rd March 17 th April 7 th May 5 th May 19 th Winter Weather Cancellations Weekday Mass Cancellations - when the Portland schools are cancelled or have a delayed opening beyond 9:00 AM, weekday Mass will be cancelled. This is to ensure everyone's safety on the roads and also to allow our grounds people time to plow parking lots and clear walks and steps around the churches. The Parish Offices will follow this same policy. St. Brigid's School will make its own school cancellation/delay notices. Weekend Masses are almost never cancelled, but each person should use good judgement about whether it is safe to Fr. Levens S.J. Fr. Bob Levens recently had a fall while out walking. Fr Bob assists us here at Our Lady of Hope parish and also serves as Faculty Chaplain at Cheverus HS. He has had to have surgery on his leg and will be at Campion Center in Mass for some time of recovery. His address there: Fr. Robert Levens, S.J. Campion Center 319 Concord Rd Weston, MA We pray for his speedy recovery. Hands Around the Capitol Rally in Augusta on January 12 The Hands Around the Capitol rally, marking and mourning the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court s Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, will be held on Saturday, January 12. The day will begin with Mass at 10 a.m., celebrated by Bishop Robert P. Deeley, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church on 41 Western Avenue. A rally will follow at 11:15 a.m. in the St. Michael School gym, located next to the church. At 12:15 p.m., participants will march to the State House, where they will join hands in silent protest while the capitol bell is rung 46 times, once for each year that has passed since the Roe v. Wade ruling. For more information, please contact Teresa McCann-Tumidajski at (207) or mrlc@mainerighttolife.com. You can also visit Daily Prayer This Week This week is a time with two special Sundays book-ending the week. Both celebrations offer an epiphany, an understanding and insight into the essence of who Jesus really is. When the Wise Men visit the poorest of families and find the baby Jesus, they have a clearer idea of what kind of king he will be. At the Baptism of the Lord the following Sunday, Jesus is baptized and the skies open and the voice of God proclaims, You are my beloved Son. More than just a prophet, this special relationship with God is made manifest in that moment. How can we make this week a special one as the Christmas season draws to a close? In some parts of the world daylight is plentiful right now, but for many of us the days are short and the dark of night surrounds us many hours each day. This could be the week to reflect on that darkness and the light that Jesus brings into our hearts. Each morning as our feet touch the floor next to our beds, we can open our hands briefly in the darkness and ask God to show us the light in our lives. Gratitude is a wonderful way to pray and to recognize the light we sometimes don't notice in our lives. Maybe in this final week of Christmas, we can light a candle at dinner and remember a special blessing we have been given or something we are grateful for in our lives. Dear Lord, You came to your disciples when they felt alone on the stormy waters and comforted them with your presence. Be with me today and let my heart be touched by the love you so lavishly give to me. Let me remember to turn to you in my fears and darkness and know that you will heal me. IV

You can also visit The Epiphany of the Lord "Behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying 'Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.'" How strange to journey so far for perhaps so little. Of course the magi go to the capitol city. Of course they entreat with King Herod. Of course this is where they expect newborn royalty to be. But where is the child? "In Bethlehem of Judea," the scribes say. And so the magi go on to what is yet another Christmas miracle. We don't know where the magi met the Christ Child, but it cannot have been lavish. Perhaps it was the stable. Perhaps it was a small hovel Joseph had found to wait out the census. But it would have been the home of a laborer, worn and threadbare. Here, in this unassuming abode, the magi are still "overjoyed...they prostrated themselves and did him homage." Have you ever gotten to the end of a great work and found the results to be underwhelming? How did you respond? Were you disappointed or elated at God's providence and your upended expectations? The magi journeyed hundreds of miles over treacherous terrain to pay homage to royalty they have seen prophesied in the stars. They encountered an ordinary family displaced from their home. This Sunday, the magi are an example for us. Can we see God in the unexpected? Do we encounter Him in the person who doesn't fit our expectations of propriety? Do we revere Christ's presence in the poor? Or do we expect to meet God only in places of honor and esteem? This week, ask God for the grace to honor Him in the unexpected places and unassuming people. He is waiting for you!

6 VI The Third Week of Christmas This Third Week of Christmas extends our reflection on the coming of our Lord among us. It is surrounded by two celebrations of epiphanies. An epiphany is a showing, a revelation, a manifestation. The day we call the Feast of the Epiphany makes use of Matthew's account of the Magi, the wise seers from the East to whom are revealed the good news of our salvation. The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord represents another epiphany. When Jesus comes out of the water, which he enters to symbolize the completeness of his entry into our lives, a voice from heaven makes known to us who Jesus is: "My beloved Son." After all these years of waiting and longing, after all the promises and hopes, he is here - born into conflict, baptized in the Jordan - for us all. The other part of the process of revelation, of showing, of epiphany is the part where we observe, recognize, take it in, and receive the good news as it is given to us. When we receive the gift, the gift giving is complete. When we recognize the one revealed, the epiphany is accomplished. When we accept who God is for us in Jesus, we let the Spirit give life to our salvation. The continuing readings from the First Letter of John are perfect to grow in a sense of how loved we are and how we are called to love. The gospels this week manifest to us a Lord who is full of compassion, who feeds the hungry and heals the sick. This is a powerful way to end the Christmas season and, long after the wrapping paper is thrown away, to look back and give thanks for the real gifts we have received this year. Employment Opportunity An immediate opening exists for a Pre-Kgrade 8 Music teacher. The position involves teaching four days per week for a total of thirty hours.
