We are guided all week by the story of Paul's journey, all the way to Rome. The final words of Jesus to his apostles, and to us, fill this week. They are comforting. His deep desire for unity among us is powerful. They prepare us to hear him praying to the Father for us. It is a week in which we can intensify and deepen our prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. We can ask for the grace all week to be open to the Spirit's coming and work in our lives. Come, Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful. Enkindle within us the fire of your love. Allow us to join you in renewing the face of the earth. Mother's Day O Lord, hear our prayers for all mothers today: mothers, grandmothers, expectant mothers and for those who would wish to bear children but who cannot. For single mothers for whom being a mother is especially difficult. We pray for mothers who worry over sick children and for those who have lost a child through illness or accident or any cause. We remember our mothers who have died and those grieving the deaths of their mother on this day. Let your mothering love surround them at this time and bring them comfort and strength. International Day of Families In 1993, the UN General Assembly declared that the 15th of May should be observed as the International Day of Families. A resolution was passed to make it official. The aim of the day is to reflect the importance communities around the world attach to families. It also serves to promote awareness of family related issues and increase peoples' knowledge of various impacts families can be affected by. Various themes are chosen. For example, 2017 it was "Families, education and well-being". While in 2016 it was "Families, healthy lives and sustainable future". The Theme for 2018 is "Families and Inclusive Societies". The aim is to explore the role that families and family policies can play in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16. This is one of 17 goals that have been adopted by countries with the aim to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Goal 16 is to promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies. This Tuesday let us take a special moment to give thanks for our families and to ask God's blessing on all families - families that look like those of our childhood and others. Let us ask God for the grace to be welcoming and supportive of the families of our parish and community.

The requested donation is $20. To arrange for this, either contact the Parish Office or place your gift and a note in an envelope and but it in the collection basket. We also have vigil candles at St. Joseph Church which can be lit. The Poor Box Finance and Administration Older church buildings often had "poor boxes" mounted near a doorway, there to collect offerings for those in special need. There are two boxes at St. Joseph Church, and our community has been regularly providing support to various community agencies from the money parishioners have placed in the boxes. Each month the recipient is listed on the box: Project Feed, St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, etc. We are one parish with two church buildings; we now have two poor boxes up at St. Pius X Church so that all of us may help in this good work as we are able. Pastoral Council Selections We have received the names of candidates for our Parish Pastoral Council. These names have been placed on the altar in each of our churches and we will pray over this selection for the next several weeks. On Pentecost we will choose the names of the three people joining the Council. "Paving Our Way to the Future" In the past week three more contribution have arrived for the Paving Project ($1, total). Thanks to all donors. We now stand at $36, collected toward an expected cost of $108,000. That means we have $71, to raise. Every contribution helps and is appreciated. Gratefully, Fr. Thanks On May 3 over 160 of us gathered at the Hall at St. Pius X to give thanks to the gift of generosity-in-service in our parish and in one another. The goal of a parish is to equip one another for carrying on the mission and ministry of Jesus. Many of you do just that. Over 270 of our members are active in parish ministries of one sort or another - plus those directly involved at St. Brigid School. The primary role of the "staff" here is to help and encourage you and provide you with what you need to do this ministry. It was great to celebrate your generosity and enthusiasm. Very special thanks to Tony Heskett our "Volunteer Coordinator of Volunteers" for making our Thursday event possible and to members of our Pastoral Council who assisted in serving. Thanks, also to the students from St. Brigid School who helped serve at this dinner as well. They did a fine job and their positive presence and spirit were a plus to the night. Congratulations. 4 Faith Formation Religious Education Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle May Intentions Members and friends of our parish are invited to join our Prayer Circle - no meetings or dues! Just a commitment to pray for the monthly intentions. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. Pope Francis' intention for this month: That the lay-faithful may fulfill their specific mission by responding with creativity to the challenges that face the world today. 3. For families and individuals struggling with addictions and other health crises, that they seek the help needed and that we support them with our love and our prayers. Thanks to Christina We extend the thanks of our parish to Christina Siravo who had been a cantor at our Saturday 4 PM Masses and Sunday morning Masses at St. Joseph's for a number of years. Her voice and ministry have been a blessing to many of us. Christiana has decided to re-focus her time and her work and so has completed her ministry here at OLH. Blessings to you Christiana. In all likelihood a number of different cantors will be sharing those Saturday and Sunday Mass times. Congratulations To all the children who received Confirmation / First Eucharist on May 6 th from Bishop Robert Deeley at St. Pius X Church. Anointing of the Sick MEMORIAL DAY MASS IV We have had a number of calls for anointings in recent weeks. Please be aware of these two points: 1. The Sacrament of Anointing is not a sacrament of the dying. The anointing is best done when the person is alert and able to participate in this beautiful blessing. There are other, special prayers, that can be offered at the time of a person's death. Also, waiting until the situation becomes an emergency may mean no priest is available to come in time. 2. If the ill person is in one of the health care facilities in the Portland area (for ex. The Barron Center, St. Joseph's Residence) then either have the staff at that facility contact the parish for the anointing or be sure the staff knows that you are calling. Our priests regularly visit these facilities. And if Hospice is involved, either have them call the parish or tell them that you are making that call. Otherwise the parish can get 2 or even 3 calls for the same person. This has happened several times recently. Please direct your call to the Parish Office , not the number at St. Pius X Church. We have an endowment for the parish! The Our Lady of Hope Parish Endowment is for anyone who wishes to make a gift that can benefit our parish and its mission for years to come. Anyone can make a gift to the endowment, in any amount, at any time. Gifts can be of cash, a bequest in a will, stock, insurance, or property. Your gift will make a difference, and assist the parish needs in perpetuity. The Foundation makes distributions annually, to the parish for use as designated. Income from this endowment can be used in ways determined by the parish. Checks should be made out to The Catholic Foundation of Maine for the Our Lady of Hope Parish Endowment. For more information about how you can leave a legacy through a gift to our parish endowment, contact Elizabeth Badger, Executive Director, at the Catholic Foundation of Maine, The annual outdoor Mass for deceased Veterans and family members will be held at 9:00 a.m. Monday, May 28 th at its usual location in the St. Dominic/ Armed Forces section of New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Msgr. Paul F. Stefanko will be the principal celebrant. In the event of rain, the Mass will be held at St. John and Holy Cross Parish, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland at the same time. Limited chairs are available so feel free to bring your own lawn chairs! This event is sponsored by the Roman Catholic Communities of Cluster 22 in cooperation with Adam and Caitlin Walker and the Staff of Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. Note regarding May Next week, May is the annual Clergy Institute of the Diocese. Our Parish Office will be open but Fr. Paul, Fr Jack and Fr Vince will not be available this week. Thanks to Fr. Levens our daily Masses that will happen as scheduled. Note these 9:00 AM Masses will be held at St. Joseph Church due to the parking lot reconstruction at St. Pius X.

5 V Catholic Belief on end-of-life issues As the Maine State legislature readies a ballot question dealing with physician-assisted suicide, it is important for us to be aware of Catholic belief and pastoral guidelines in terms of end-of-life medical treatment both for our own needs and to help respond to the questions of our friends and neighbors. We have a good summary of that teaching in a document called Three Beliefs. Copies are available at both churches and also on our parish website. Our parish priests are also able to help you with your questions. Join us for summer bible camp 2018! 6 Dear Parishioners, The students and staff at St. Brigid School are entering the final days of the academic year. The school year has been full of surprises and blessings and as we enter the home stretch I will share some highlights with you about the PreK-Grade 3 students. The 4-5-year old s have excelled at reading books this year. Mary-Ann Russo - Director of Institutional Advancement Each student maintains a reading log and at last count this group has read close to 3000 books. I am confident that these children will continue to develop their love of reading instilled in them by their parents and teachers. The kindergarten students continue to master their 100 sight words, learn disciplined habits of work, and develop the skills necessary to move on to first grade. It is truly amazing to witness their growth in all of the aspects of their formation. The grade 1 students recited the morning prayer and the pledge of allegiance over the PA system during the month of April. It was wonderful to listen to them lead us in prayer each morning. The grade 2 students can best be characterized as a very inquisitive group with varied interests and passions. They are readers, very prayerful people, and are poised to take over the third grade. Many of our second-grade students received the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation last weekend at the 9am St. Pius X Church. The third graders are mastering their math facts, practicing cursive writing, and exploring the world of science. They will be visiting historic sites in Portland, releasing salmon that they have raised in their classroom, and continuing to serve as members of Team Jesus and as members of the Sisterhood service organization. St. Brigid School is the place to be and each and every day I am affirmed in the belief that God s light and love shines upon our school and that we are following the command to love one another. I will share some highlights from grades 4-8 next week. Sincerely, Bill Burke Principal "Recalculating with the Holy Spirit Cara Callbeck "Discernment" ( Book Order Thanks to everyone who ordered a copy of "Seven Keys to Spiritual Wellenss" The order has been placed, and we will let you know when the books arrive and also have some options to join in discussion for those who wish to do that. Thanks! School News St. Brigid School Stevens Avenue Portland, Maine William Burke - Principal I am not the greatest driver. I am easily flustered, particularly when I am in the unfortunate position of having to drive in an area unfamiliar to me. In those flustered and confused moments, I am comforted by one word spoken all too often by my GPS: recalculating. The word reassures me that no matter how far off-course I may have gotten from my desired destination, my trusty GPS is working to get me back on track. I know I'm going to get there eventually with the help of that handy little device-and by the grace of God, of course! The word "recalculating" took on even more meaning for me when I was going through the Spiritual Exercises. An important part of the Exercises is discernment. St. Ignatius set out his rules for discernment in the hopes that a retreatant will integrate useful tools for discernment in all matters of life, in a way that will help the person follow God's will. In my work, I am required to make decisions quickly and adjust courses of action based on information as it becomes available. I don't have the luxury of taking the time to reflect very deeply on any given matter before I am expected to act decisively. The speed at which I make decisions at work has slowly encroached into my personal life, and I find myself, all too often, making decisions first, and then discerning after that fact. I struggle trying to find some way of incorporating Ignatius's rules for discernment into this life I lead where I have become accustomed to making all of my decisions quickly. This is still a challenge for me. So perhaps I am not the best at discerning, and that means that sometimes I find myself heading down a path that was likely not of God but of my own limited insight. I am heartened, however, by what our retreat director reminded us of during the Exercises: that God takes our decisions and makes the best of them. The way I see it, the Holy Spirit takes these ideas of mine and my imperfect decisions, and recalculates. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight" (Proverbs 3:5), but when you take that next wrong turn on your journey, rest assured that the Holy Spirit will recalculate and gently guide you back on course. At several times this year students from St. Brigid School have assisted at parish events. They were real pros in serving at the Wine Pairing Dinner in January and again at our recent (May 3) Volunteer Appreciation Night Dinner. They carry out their assigned tasks very well and their good spirit is infectious and appreciated by all. Congratulations and thanks to them and to their teachers and parents. We can all be very proud of such wonderful young people. That is the good spirit of our school. VIII
