Richard Bertrand, SJ 09/09 to 09/15 Daily Prayer This Week This week's daily communion with our Lord can be about the mysteries of self-sacrifice and healing. In the back of our minds each day, we can have a desire to take time out of our busy days just as Jesus did, for prayer and speaking to his Father. We can be aware of the judgmental religious leaders of Jesus' time, who ignored the beam of wood in their own eyes to point out the splinter in someone else's eye. We can also ask for the vision to see how we might be blind to our own snap judgments of others. If we begin each morning by praying a desire, the rest will follow for the day. Good morning, Lord. Thank you for this day. Help me today to bring to you the parts of myself that need your healing. Be with me as I face the poverty, hunger or tears of this day. We can go into this prayer, in more depth or detail while we are in the shower or getting dressed. If we let these desires make their way into the background of our day, we can focus our consciousness no matter what we are doing. Even in activities that require our full consciousness and attention, it is possible to shape that consciousness in the context of our desires. For example, I might be in an important meeting, that doesn't allow me to day dream. But, I can walk into that meeting room saying in my heart, Okay, Lord, be with me here. While I'm so tempted to be seen as a 'success' here, heal all of that focus on myself and free me to do my best and to be attentive to the needs of others. Let me focus on you and your desires for the greater good here. Especially when we are facing something that is quite difficult, requiring real self-sacrifice and genuine love, we can let our background conversation with the Lord release us from our typical response or behavior. Lord, I'm so full of fear sometimes. I see you boldly heal the man with the withered hand in front of the steely gaze of your critics. You healed because you knew it was the right and compassionate thing to do. Help me to be more courageous in choosing the right thing in my life today. FIAT is a discernment group for high school students, college students and beyond who want to know more about RELIGIOUS SISTERS, and may be questioning this vocation for themselves. All meetings are on the 2 nd and 4 th Friday of each month, from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Convent/409 Pool Street/Biddeford. Come join us on Friday, September 14 at 6:00 p.m. For more information fiatmaine@gmail.com or

(this is the school to which folks here gave money earlier this year via the Slavicks and Sacred Heart St. Dominic) Questions: Call Liturgy of the Word We would very much like to offer a Liturgy of the Word for children during at least one weekend Mass on a regular basis. This allows the children to hear the Word of God on their level and is an important way for us to help families with young children in our intergenerational parish. This does not replace faith formation but helps the children to better understand the Bible. A couple of you have come forward to offer your time and energy to this ministry. We need 2-3 more to make it a go. Won t you lend your hands and heart to this worthwhile work? If you are interested in finding out more or in volunteering, we would love to hear from you. Please call or ourlady.religioused@gmail.com Many thanks Sandy Litcher, DRE and Fr Paul SJ On the Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time, Isaiah offers comforting words: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. In Mark's Gospel, Jesus heals a deaf and mute man. The people are astonished and say of Jesus, He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. III

4 Faith Formation Religious Education Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle September Intentions Members and friends of our parish are invited to join our Prayer Circle - no meetings or dues! Just a commitment to pray for the monthly intentions. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. Pope Francis monthly intention. For young people in Africa. That young people in Africa may have access to education and work in their own countries. 3. For people in places of suffering, whose names only God and their friends and families know, and whose lives God cherishes. Beyond Forgiveness PRESENTER Jeanne Bishop Respected Author and Public Defender We do vengeance and retribution really well. We don t do restoration and redemption and healing very well, and we need to have more opportunities to do that. Wednesday, September 19 ~ 6:00 pm St. Charles Borromeo Church 132 McKeen Street, Brunswick All are welcome ~ Admission is Free For more info, please contact All Saints Parish Jeanne Bishop is the author of Change of Heart and public defender who became a prominent advocate for gun violence prevention and the abolition of the death penalty after the murders of her sister, brother-in-law, and their unborn child. In the process, she was inspired to forgive and reconcile with the man responsible for their tragic deaths. From the Office of the Bishop In August, as part of a grand jury report released in Pennsylvania, a priest named John Pascal Sabas was listed as an individual accused of sexual abuse of a minor. Though not a priest of the Diocese of Portland, the grand jury report stated that he served in Maine in the early 1960s at Sacred Heart Church in Yarmouth and St. Joseph Church in Portland. The abuse was reported as having occurred in Pennsylvania after he left Maine. A subsequent review of our files shows that no allegations have been received concerning this priest. All the same, the diocese encourages any victims/survivors of this priest to come forward and contact civil authorities as well as Michael Magalski, Director of the Office of Professional Responsibility for the Diocese of Portland, at (207) or michael.magalski@portlanddiocese.org. As always, the diocese wants to do what it can to assist, if at all possible, in a process which leads to healing. Our prayers and sorrow extend to all victims/survivors and their families. May our Loving Father continue to send his Spirit over us to guide our vigilance in providing for the care and safety of all in our Church. Faith Formation News To register for classes this year you may stop by the Religious Education Office Monday, and Thursday 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and Friday by appointment 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM to register. We continue to have the 2 year Sacramental Preparation program in our diocese. Level 1 - For students in Grades 1 and Grade 2 who are just beginning their faith formation. Level 2 - The immediate preparation for all three (3) sacraments (Penance, Confirmation, and First Eucharist) for those who have completed Level 1. New this year, we will have a combined group of 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th Grades. We will be using Venture from Pflaun Gospel Weeklies. It uses the readings from the Sunday Mass and how it can be applied in their everyday life. Classes begin September 16 th, at St. Brigid School. We meet weekly from 8:55 AM to 9:55 AM. Looking forward to seeing your child / children in the fall. Blessings Sandy Litcher DRE Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood The Sisters have announced that after more than 80 years here in Portland, they will be closing their monastery on State Street on Oct. 4 th. We thank the Sisters for their ministry of prayer on behalf of all of us, and we are sorry to see this move but understand its necessity. The Jesuit Community has served the Sisters as chaplains for most if not all of their time here and their prayer has been important to us. Following the closure of the monastery, Our Lady of Hope Parish will offer a Saturday morning Mass at 8:00 AM at St. Pius X Church, beginning on October 6 th.. IV Bazaar Committee Bazaar Committee meeting - are you interested in helping with this years BAZAAR? Our first meeting will be on Thursday September 20 th at 7:00 PM in the St. Pius X church hall. We will meet every other Thursday until the BAZAAR on November 10 th. Please join us. Call Paul Leblond (pleblond@me.com) If interested. Church Magazine Racks The parish has been providing copies of a number of Catholic magazines (The Tablet, America, Commonwealth, St. Anthony Messenger) at St. Pius X. We also had supplies at St. Joseph but found copies were rarely taken there. This availability was made possible by a special arrangement with Paulist Press. Unfortunately they are discontinuing this offer effective September 1. That means the parish can no longer offer this selection of periodicals. Reading current Catholic material is a very good thing, helpful for our continuing growth in faith and understanding. The parish priests encourage you to subscribe to a good Catholic periodical such as those we have been providing. Regrettably the parish is unable to assume the expense of keeping copies in the church racks at the regular subscription rates.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Feast day September 14 Knights of Columbus Council 101 meets the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Msgr.P.J. Flanagan Parish Center at St. Pius X. Grand Knight - William Green Knights of Columbus Council meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Parish Business Office at St. Joseph s in the Basement Meeting Room. Grand Knight - Justin Russell Knights of Columbus 4 th Degree Assembly meets the 2 nd Monday of the month 7:00 PM in the Msgr. P.J. Flanagan Parish Center at St. Pius X. Faithful Navigator - John Land The one symbol most often identified with Jesus and his Church is the cross. We celebrate The Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast traces its beginning to Jerusalem and the dedication of the church built on the site of Mount Calvary in 335. But the meaning of the cross is deeper than any city, any celebration, any building. The cross is a sign of suffering, a sign of human cruelty at its worst. But by Christ s love shown in the Paschal Mystery, it has become the sign of triumph and victory, the sign of God, who is love itself. Believers have always looked to the cross in times of suffering. People in concentration camps, in prisons, in hospitals, in any place of suffering and loneliness, have been known to draw, trace, or form crosses and focus their eyes and hearts on them. The cross does not explain pain and misery. It does not give us any easy answers. But it does help us to see our lives united with Christ s. We often make the Sign of the Cross over ourselves. We make it before prayer to help fix our minds and hearts on God. We make it after prayer, hoping to stay close to God. In trials and temptations, the cross is a sign of strength and protection. The cross is the sign of the fullness of life that is ours. At Baptism, too, the Sign of the Cross is used; the priest, parents, and godparents make the sign on the forehead of the child. A sign made on the forehead is a sign of belonging. By the Sign of the Cross in Baptism, Jesus takes us as his own in a unique way. Today, let us look to the cross often. Let us make the Sign of the Cross and realize we bring our whole selves to God our minds, souls, bodies, wills, thoughts, hearts everything we are and will become. O cross, you are the glorious sign of our victory. Through your power may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.

6 VIII School News St. Brigid School Stevens Avenue Portland, Maine William Burke - Principal Mary-Ann Russo - Director of Institutional Advancement Dear Parishioners, St. Brigid School opened its doors to 280 students on Wednesday, August 29. Despite the heat the students, their parents and teachers were eager to begin the academic year. As each academic year begins I become more aware of the effects of the passage of time. The eighth grade students at St. Brigid were fifth graders when I began serving as principal. The lives of these students has changed so much in three years and it will change again as they complete their final year at St. Brigid School. The student population continues to change at the school. This year the school experienced an increased interest from parents and students in our middle school program and fourteen students joined us in grades The PreK program for three and four year old students is near enrollment capacity. I encourage you to spread the word and to encourage people you meet to explore St. Brigid as an educational choice for their children. The readings for the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time are full of references that can be applied to St. Brigid School. We read in Isaiah, Here is your God and I can say that I encounter God each day in my interactions with the St. Brigid School community.in the Psalm we read that the Lord gives sight and raises us up. Each day I witness the Lord giving sight through academic study, providing new perspectives, and assisting students as they begin to grow and see the world a bit differently as members of a faith based community. The Lord works through my teachers and students when they help a classmate or colleague through a difficult personal issue or academic challenge. In the gospel of James we read that the people who witnessed the teaching of Jesus were exceedingly astonished. I can say without a doubt that the constant work of the Lord I witness each day at St. Brigid School leaves me feeling the same way! Sincerely, Bill Burke Principal Purchase with purpose.
