This work has been a very long time in coming. Thanks to those members and friends of the parish who have given contributions to pay for this project. Several have been making weekly gifts (anonymously). Thanks for your faithfulness. It is appreciated. However, many or most members of the parish have not yet made a contribution at all. With the additional cost necessitated because of the lack of proper drainage, our cost increased, leaving us now around $80,000 to raise. We need help from everyone. We have begun a study of other pressing needs of our physical plant ( pressing means just that things that really need to get done or fixed, not extras. That report will be ready for all of us to see by the fall. Fr. Paul SJ Pastoral Council During the weeks of the Easter season we have, as a parish, been praying over the selection of new members for our Parish Pastoral Council. From the candidates nominated, three people have been selected to fill seats left open by members whose terms have ended. Our new Council members are: Parishioners Bill Slavick, Mary Ellen White, a member of the faculty at St. Brigid School, and Michael Luna, a graduate of St. Brigid School and current student at Cheverus High School. Thank you very much to these three for being willing to serve us. Thanks to Sr. Claire Pouliot and Cindy Russell who have served us generously and well these past year. Thanks also to Doug and Amy Weissman who were sharing a seat until they moved from the parish. The next meeting of the Council for all members, outgoing, continuing and newly chosen, will be June 20 th. We will meet at the St. Pius X Hall at 6:00 PM for a business/social meeting including dinner. Fr Paul SJ Project Feed-Note of Thanks Project Feed has sent a note of thanks to OLH parishioners for the food that you have given. In recent weeks they are received 11 bags of groceries. Your ongoing support of Project Feed and those who depend on it is truly appreciated. Feeding the hungry is one of those things Jesus expressly asked us to do. II

4 Faith Formation Religious Education Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle June Intentions Members and friends of our parish are invited to join our Prayer Circle - no meetings or dues! Just a commitment to pray for the monthly intentions. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. For our young people, those graduating from St. Brigid School, Cheverus, and other area primary and secondary schools and universities, that their journeys ahead be blessed, that they seek God in their lives and seek to be people for others. 3. For those for whom summer brings extra work: migrant farm workers, those staffing restaurants, hotels, parks and other attractions, for lifeguards and safety personnel. We pray for their well-being. Universal Prayer The Catholic Appeal * As disciples who are called to make a difference in our world, may our offering bring new opportunities for the Church to reach out to those in need through the Catholic Appeal. * As stewards who are grateful for the many gifts with which God has entrusted us, may we respond generously to the Catholic Appeal. * As disciples who are dedicated to supporting our brothers and sisters in need, may we prayerfully discern how we can help others through the Catholic Appeal. * As Catholics who live our convictions, may we be channels of Christ's presence in our world by participating in the Catholic Appeal in a spirit of unconditional love. * As Christians who are committed to the ministries of our diocesan church, may our support of the Catholic Appeal be a meaningful and practical expression of our faith. * As a people blessed by the Lord, may others come to know the caring and compassionate Christ as we share from our bounty through the Catholic Appeal. * As a people who have been saved by the Lord, may our commitment to the Catholic Appeal reflect God's gracious generosity to us. * As a people whom the Lord has called by name, may we say "Yes" to his invitation to sacrificial service and charity. * As disciples who are alive in the Risen Lord, may our actions reflect our desire to grow in the love and light of Christ. There are discussion questions that go along with the book. You can find them on our website ( KeystoSpiritualWellnessQuestions.pdf). You might want to take a look at the questions even if you are not reading this book! Some of us expressed a desire to get together and talk about what we are reading. You can just invite folks to do that with you. Also, if you want to talk about this book, come by the St. Pius X Hall on Sunday June 17 2:00-3:00 PM Making our faith part of our lives.. we seek your help! One of the goals that has come from our Parish Planning process this year is making more opportunities available for those who want to grow in a deeper experience of their faith. This fall we will be inviting members of the parish to join in small groups to reflect on the Scriptures and Jesus call to us. Right now we need a few willing hands to help us get this plan off the ground. No training needed just a generous heart. If you have a generous heart and can give us a bit of time, please contact the Parish Office as soon as possible. Thanks Fr Paul SJ If you are at Mass, then you can. Be a Eucharistic Minister (or reader). We are especially in need of women and men, teens, to assist in distributing Communion at our weekend Masses. We will provide the training you need. Most weeks we are short one or more ministers, and during the Summer our regulars may be away. A small investment on your part. A big help to the parish. We will schedule you to meet your needs. For more information contact the Parish Office or talk to one of the priests. Father s Day Prayers Let us pray for fathers: for loving fathers, for caring fathers, for absent fathers. Let us pray for fathers who read to their children, for fathers who have had to watch a child die, for fathers who provide for their families, for fathers unable to work. Let us pray for fathers who have two or more families, for fathers who have long been in love with their wives, for fathers who struggle in their marriages, for fathers who became fathers this day for our own fathers, our friends fathers, for men unable to father children, for fathers we know who need our support and our prayers. Loving God, as fathers, mothers, as children, we ask for your blessing and we bring you our prayers. Fathers the pray of an older person They didn t have the opportunities we had, but made more of them. Without degrees they made their mark locally, writing in parish magazines. Proved in the thirties and the War, they knew unemployment without joyriding. They knew rationing without resentment. Our fathers lived life fully and they lived in us, our school reports, our holidays, our student days, unlikely choice of jobs and odd liaisons. Now they are gone, their passing tolled by every nerve and cell in us, their grieving sons and daughters. Eleanor Nesbitt Happy Father s Day IV

Bulletin Items for the bulletin are due 10 days prior to publication. Please submit information to andrew.litcher@gmail.com.thank You The Summer Solstice The timing of the solstice is not based on a specific calendar date and time. It depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point from the equator. This year for the US and Canada it is Thursday June 21 at 6:07 AM. The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice). In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer. This summer solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year. In zip code dawn breaks at 2:36 AM, sunrise is at 4:59 AM, sunset is 8:26 PM and darkness descends at 10:49 PM. The length of our day is 15 hours 26 minutes. For our ancestors, the turning of the seasons was an occasion of special prayer and thanksgiving. As we enter the special time of a Maine Summer, let us, too, pause to give thanks. These words can be our prayer of blessing and may be sung to the tune of Morning Has Broken : Touch the earth lightly, use the earth gently, nourish the life of the world in our care. Gift of great wonder, ours to surrender, trust for the children tomorrow will bear. We who endanger, who create hunger; agents of death for all creatures that live; we who would foster clouds of disaster, God of the planet, forestall and forgive. Let there be greening, birth from the burning, water that blesses and air that is sweet; health in God s garden, hope in God s children, regeneration that peace will complete. God of all living, God of all loving, God of the seedling, the soil and the sun, teach us, deflect us, Christ reconnect us, using us gently, making us one Parish Finances for May 2018 Offertory $45, General expenses- $44, Total $ Extraordinary expenses paid in May: The above total doesn't reflect the capital improvement expense of $25, (the 1st of two payments) for the gutter repair at St. Joseph Church and the current quarterly Diocesan assessment of $18,

6 Dear Parishioners, The academic Year for the students at St. Brigid School concluded on June 15 and now it is time for the students to enjoy the summer vacation. There are only 73 days until school begins again on August 29 and I hope that my students and the staff at the school enjoy some much-deserved time off. I will miss all of the interactions that take place with the members of the school community but will eventually settle into the familiar pattern of summer work at a school devoid of 290 students. The interactions that I will miss the most are the spontaneous conversations with my students, their parents and my staff. Summer is a time when I reflect back on the memorable stories that made me laugh, cry, or shake my head in disbelief. Just last week, I was in the fourth grade classroom and the students were working on grammar and spelling words. Taking that subject as a conversation starter, I stated that sometimes I have to pause and think about the spelling of the word tomorrow. The mm and rr thing. Ella looked up from her seat and said, Mr. Burke, I have trouble with ambidextrous, obligatory, Caucasian, and amethyst. I stood there in stunned silence for a moment, smiled, and then realized once again why I have the best job in the world. Ella smiled and went right back to work in her grammar book. That was the end of the conversation. You can t make this stuff up! As the academic year ends, I invite members of our parish community to spread the news that there are still openings in all grades for students and families who wish to join our school community for the academic year. Please share the story of St. Brigid School with all of the people you know. We are only a phone call away at School s Out for Summer almost The School Year at St. Brigid s ends this week. Here in the Parish Office we ll miss the signs and sounds of life around the place, though we admit to being happy to gain a few extra parking places. We ask God for a safe summer of fun and growth for our students and some well-earned rest for our faculty. Main office folks (Mr. Burke, Mary Ann Russo and others) will be in and around as well as enjoying some vacation time. In the ministry of St. Brigid School, our parish has much cause for gratitude and holy pride. Our recent planning process (and you ll hear much more of that come September) identified one of the key hallmarks of our parish is that we are an intergenerational community. St. Brigid s is a big part of that. Thank you to those parishioners who have taken special interest and St. Brigid s and who have helped the school in many ways. Already we have plans in the works for further growth and development in the educational and spiritual mission of the school founded in the Mercy Tradition and inspired by the Jesuit educational Vision. Our catechists have carried on good and valuable ministry in caring for the young people in our parish-based faith formation programs as well. We look for ways we can expand our youth programs here and that depends on the interest and participation of our parish families. We are eager to hear your ideas and receive your help. Blessings and congratulations to those leaving one stage of schooling and moving on whether that be 8 th graders, high school seniors, college and university grads or adult learners of all types. And, as a pastor I know likes to say, summer may be a vacation from school, don t make it a vacation from God. Help our young people grow up equipped to handle all the serious challenges to their well-being by keeping them involved in the prayer and community life of a parish. Fr Paul SJ I wish you a refreshing and restful summer.
