We clearly want to be his follower, and we do follow him. The humbling reality is that we are inconsistent. At the very time that Jesus is telling us that he wants us to find ourselves by losing ourselves, we are too often being competitive and trying to be on top somehow. Fortunately, he keeps telling us about the real meaning of discipleship. Paul lays it all out in this week's first readings. The parable of the sower is quite helpful this week. How healthy and rich is the soil of our own souls? Can we feel the longing we have to make our hearts more receptive to the message of Jesus? Each morning, as soon as we can after waking up, perhaps associated with some automatic behavior like putting on slippers or a robe or getting a cup of coffee, we begin the day in the presence of our Lord. We can get into the habit of greeting our Lord, Good morning, Lord. Thank you for this day. Even if we didn't have a good night's sleep and we are waking up fairly tired, this habit can part of our routine. Naming our desire for the day can become the way we begin our day with the Lord. Repeating it, with more details, as we encounter the people and responsibilities of our day, will deepen our relationship with the Lord. Brief prayers (which are really just conversations) sustain the connection all day. In one circumstance this week, I might say, Lord, here I am being that very hard ground. Please get through to me in the part of me that is still 'receptive soil.' Another day, I might catch myself trying to make myself look good and I can say, Dear Jesus, your reminder helps me right here. Let me be a servant in this situation, with these people - forgiving, listening, compassion and freer. Sometime this week we might encounter someone who needs us to be like Jesus - healing something that is broken, or even deadly and we can say, Lord, let me do your will, imitate your faith in God here. Thank you for being with me. INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Who do you say Jesus is? Some look to Jesus as the reliever of pain and suffering. We want to believe in a God who will take away the discomfort we are feeling and make things better. Frustration and even a lessening of faith can happen when we realize this is not happening. Jesus is the Christ. As the Christ, he is the one who shows us how to keep both the joys and sorrows of life in balance. There is no hopping, skipping, or jumping over suffering. It is a part of life. In addition to the physical pain we are asked to endure, living the Gospel can bring rejection and suffering as well. Jesus the Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Do we have the desire and faith to follow him?

Beyond Forgiveness PRESENTER Jeanne Bishop Respected Author and Public Defender We do vengeance and retribution really well. We don t do restoration and redemption and healing very well, and we need to have more opportunities to do that. Wednesday, September 19 ~ 6:00 pm St. Charles Borromeo Church 132 McKeen Street, Brunswick All are welcome ~ Admission is Free For more info, please contact All Saints Parish Jeanne Bishop is the author of Change of Heart and public defender who became a prominent advocate for gun violence prevention and the abolition of the death penalty after the murders of her sister, brother-in-law, and their unborn child. In the process, she was inspired to forgive and reconcile with the man responsible for their tragic deaths. From the Office of the Bishop In August, as part of a grand jury report released in Pennsylvania, a priest named John Pascal Sabas was listed as an individual accused of sexual abuse of a minor. Though not a priest of the Diocese of Portland, the grand jury report stated that he served in Maine in the early 1960s at Sacred Heart Church in Yarmouth and St. Joseph Church in Portland. The abuse was reported as having occurred in Pennsylvania after he left Maine. A subsequent review of our files shows that no allegations have been received concerning this priest. All the same, the diocese encourages any victims/survivors of this priest to come forward and contact civil authorities as well as Michael Magalski, Director of the Office of Professional Responsibility for the Diocese of Portland, at (207) or michael.magalski@portlanddiocese.org. As always, the diocese wants to do what it can to assist, if at all possible, in a process which leads to healing. Our prayers and sorrow extend to all victims/survivors and their families. May our Loving Father continue to send his Spirit over us to guide our vigilance in providing for the care and safety of all in our Church. Looking forward to seeing your child / children in the fall. Blessings Sandy Litcher DRE Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood The Sisters have announced that after more than 80 years here in Portland, they will be closing their monastery on State Street on Oct. 4 th. We thank the Sisters for their ministry of prayer on behalf of all of us, and we are sorry to see this move but understand its necessity. The Jesuit Community has served the Sisters as chaplains for most if not all of their time here and their prayer has been important to us. Following the closure of the monastery, Our Lady of Hope Parish will offer a Saturday morning Mass at 8:00 AM at St. Pius X Church, beginning on October 6 th.. IV Bazaar Committee Bazaar Committee meeting - are you interested in helping with this years BAZAAR? Our first meeting will be on Thursday September 20 th at 7:00 PM in the St. Pius X church hall. We will meet every other Thursday until the BAZAAR on November 10 th. Please join us. Call Paul Leblond (pleblond@me.com) If interested. AED Thanks to the generosity of the Knights of Columbus (counsels 101 & 11257) the parish has acquired our first automated external defibrillator (AED). The Director of Risk Management for the Diocese of Portland strongly encourages all parishes to have an AED on site with the priority being the church building. We recently installed an AED at St. Pius X Church. For those of you unfamiliar with an AED it is a portable devise used to shock the heart into a functional rhythm, if needed. When the AED is applied properly to the chest, it assesses the heart rhythm, determines if a shock is needed and provides a shock when the rescuer presses a button. To learn how it works and see a training video go to: The Prayer Shawl group will be meeting in St. Pius X Church hall classroom Friday at 2:30 PM on September 21 st but will be changing to 1:30 PM the 1 st Tuesday of the month starting in October (October 2). Retreat Opportunity in September On Saturday September 22 nd, from 9:15 AM- 2:30 PM at St. Pius X, Gini Grommes, an Ignatian Spiritual Director and seasonal member of Our Lady of Hope, will offer an opportunity to prayerfully remember where God has been alive in us and with us. Please bring a bagged lunch and 3 pictures or mementoes that remind you of God s love in your daily life. Beverages will be available. Come and see! Prayer for Catechists God of our fathers and mothers, today we mark Catechetical Sunday, the day we recommit ourselves to teaching and forming disciples to continue your work in this world. In the beginning, you created man to please you and offer you companionship. We turned away from you without knowing the great love you had for us. Help us to recapture that understanding of your love for us and for creation. Give us wisdom to hand on to the next generation that love you freely give us. We ask all that is good to come upon our catechetical leaders and the people whom they lead to the faith. We ask all this in the name of the primary teacher of the faith, Jesus the Christ. Amen. Catechetical Sunday Knights of Columbus Council 101 meets the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Msgr.P.J. Flanagan Parish Center at St. Pius X. Grand Knight - William Green Knights of Columbus Council meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Parish Business Office at St. Joseph s in the Basement Meeting Room. Grand Knight - Justin Russell Knights of Columbus 4 th Degree Assembly meets the 2 nd Monday of the month 7:00 PM in the Msgr. P.J. Flanagan Parish Center at St. Pius X. Faithful Navigator - John Land The word "catechesis" means "to echo." Literally, we are to echo the good news of Jesus Christ to the world. This is not a suggestion; it is a command of our Lord. Some people are called and set apart in our communities as catechists, those formally trained and charged with passing on the Gospel to children and adults, inside and outside of our communities. On Catechetical Sunday, we acknowledge them and remind ourselves of the need for formation and growth in all of us. To be a catechist is a privileged calling, and today be sure to say "thank you" to one in your community. However, it would be wrong on this day to only look to those bearing the NAME of catechist for an echoing of good news. ALL of us are called to echo and share the Gospel message. Parents are the first and primary catechists in a child's life. But we also are important catechists in the lives of our coworkers, our spouses, our relatives, and our friends. Some say catechesis begins in the home, and while that is true, it carries with it a parent/child connotation. But where does catechesis really begin? It begins in the HEART. This year on Catechetical Sunday, may your heart be moved to motivate you to share with others the good news of Jesus Christ.
6 VIII School News St. Brigid School Stevens Avenue Portland, Maine William Burke - Principal Mary-Ann Russo - Director of Institutional Advancement Dear Parishioners, St. Brigid School opened its doors to 280 students on Wednesday, August 29. Despite the heat the students, their parents and teachers were eager to begin the academic year. As each academic year begins I become more aware of the effects of the passage of time. The eighth grade students at St. Brigid were fifth graders when I began serving as principal. The lives of these students has changed so much in three years and it will change again as they complete their final year at St. Brigid School. The student population continues to change at the school. This year the school experienced an increased interest from parents and students in our middle school program and fourteen students joined us in grades The PreK program for three and four year old students is near enrollment capacity. I encourage you to spread the word and to encourage people you meet to explore St. Brigid as an educational choice for their children. The readings for the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time are full of references that can be applied to St. Brigid School. We read in Isaiah, Here is your God and I can say that I encounter God each day in my interactions with the St. Brigid School community.in the Psalm we read that the Lord gives sight and raises us up. Each day I witness the Lord giving sight through academic study, providing new perspectives, and assisting students as they begin to grow and see the world a bit differently as members of a faith based community. The Lord works through my teachers and students when they help a classmate or colleague through a difficult personal issue or academic challenge. In the gospel of James we read that the people who witnessed the teaching of Jesus were exceedingly astonished. I can say without a doubt that the constant work of the Lord I witness each day at St. Brigid School leaves me feeling the same way! Sincerely, Bill Burke Principal Purchase with purpose. Shop for back to school supplies at smile.amazon.com/ch/ and Amazon donates to Our Lady of Hope Parish. Our Lady of Hope Parish (EIN: ) has been issued a $ donation from the AmazonSmile Foundation as a result of AmazonSmile program activity between April 1 and June 30, On the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear in Mark's Gospel as Jesus tell his disciples about his passion, death and resurrection to come in Jerusalem. Peter tries to prevent him from going there. Jesus rebukes him and tells the disciples and us that to be a disciple is to follow him, not trying to save one's life, but by dying to ourselves and losing ourselves for his sake and that of the Gospel. That is the only path to real life.
