We might think of the Holy Family as "the perfect family" but Scripture gives us other indications, that in coming to take on life with us, God's Son did not choose perfection, but precisely to know the struggles and sufferings that are the lot of many of our brothers and sisters and even ourselves. Mary's pregnancy was a cause of scandal and, if Joseph had acted differently, might have cost Mary her life. We are told that Mary, Joseph and Jesus had to flee their home and become refugees in Egypt to escape Herod. At the time of Jesus' life, the nation was under foreign (Roman) occupation, and the poor struggled economically. And, if you look backwards in Jesus' family tree you won't find a "pure bloodline" but rather evidences of infidelity, arranged murder, foreign (Gentle) blood. As one contemporary Christmas carol puts it "not a well-established family with an heirloom christening shawl, but a homeless, wandering couple parented the Lord of All... God, determined to be different from the standards we think best, in his choice of friends and family, lets forgotten folk be blessed. Not obsessed by our achievement, worldly wealth or family tree, may we, in and with God's chosen, find our fondest pedigree." On this feast, then, we can ask God's blessing on our own imperfect family, secure in the knowledge that God knows about all that. Somethings to think about... First, thanks again to everyone who returned a Commitment Card for "Embrace Our Parish Future." We're working on your responses and will be getting back to you in the New Year. Surprisingly we received a large number of returned letters from the mailing that went out to the parish. That means people have moved and not given us a new address. We have learned in our planning process that good communication is important. Sometimes that will be directly at Mass, sometimes in the bulletin or on our website or App, but sometimes it will be most helpful to send you material by mail. If you haven't updated your mailing address lately, please do that. If you are receiving offering envelopes, please do use them. It is very helpful to know you are here and "with us." Unused envelope sets do cost the parish and if a family is not using them, it may mean they are no longer in the parish. And, importantly,...i'd like to offer opportunities for those of us who find it helpful to gather occasionally with others to share Scripture and our journey and faith. If this is of interest to you, think about how you'd like to do that - a group meeting monthly? In your home? At church? Something less frequent? Would you be willing to help coordinate such a small group (6-8 or 10 people). Let me know. Peace and blessing, Fr. Paul SJ

Paving Project - Embrace our Parish Future A Big Step Forward Thanks to 62 donors or families we have reached the challenge goal of $5000. ($ 8,875) to match a gift by a parishioner. This is a good kick-off to our complete project goal of $108,000. We have also received two additional very special gifts so the total received to date for this project is now $ 28,875 All the money raised for this project is in a special account for this purpose only. Until we need to draw on it this spring, it will be earning interest for us. Many thanks for this strong beginning - we still have $ 79,125 to raise, so your continuing help is essential. Gifts have generally come in requesting anonymity. If that is not true for you, let me know. We have had one gift given in memory of Dorothy Handlon. Gratefully, Fr. Paul SJ Fr. Donal MacVeigh, S.J. (screenshot of St. Pius X Church Live Streaming ) III A New Year's Blessing "God of our lives, you are always calling us to follow you into the future, inviting us to new ventures, new challenges, new ways to cre, new ways to touch the hearts of all. When we are fearful of the unknown, give us courage. When we worry that we are not up to the task, remind us that you would not call us if you did not believe in us. When we get tired, or feel disappointed with the way things are going, remind us that you can bring change and hope out of the most difficult situations." This is the year that God has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. May this year be a year of growth in faith, hope and love in our parish and school. May peace be with us and among us. Fr Paul SJ Communion Visits at Home Are you - or do you know someone who would like to receive the Eucharist but is unable to come to church? Please let us know at the Parish. We have a number of parishioners in the ministry of Home Visits who could come to your home for a visit, prayer, and Communion. This is an active ministry in this parish as we seek to serve our elderly and ill parishioners.

4 IV Faith Formation Religious Education Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle January Intentions Members and friends of our parish are invited to join our Prayer Circle - no meetings or dues! Just a commitment to pray for the monthly intentions. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. Pope Francis' Intention this month: Christian Unity. That all Christian s may be faithful to the Lord's teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore communion among the churches by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity. 3. For those young people and adults who have been physically or psychologically abused, that they be healed. For abuses, that they admit their wrong-doing, and seek treatment and healing. For the community, that we seek justice and forgiveness for offenders and not demonization. Thanks "Twas a night or two AFTER Christmas and all through the parish offices things have settled down - a bit. During the days of preparation for Christmas and Christmas weekend, it has been very busy. Thanks to everyone who is making our Christmas season here at Our Lady of Hope and St. Brigid School brighter, charitable, and festive. May all your labors and generosity be well blessed. Thanks for the cards and good wishes extended. The Way We Grow is a group for young families looking for an opportunity to grow in the faith, be encouraged by their vocation to motherhood (or fatherhood!), participate in Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, and meet other families who share the core values and teachings of the Catholic Church. Various topics and speakers are presented each month in a very informal and casual setting. Meetings take place in the parish hall every first Friday at 10:00 am. Children welcome and encouraged to attend! For more information Katie Paladino at katiepaladino9@gmail.com Have you thought? In this season of gift giving, have you thought about ways to support our parish beyond our weekly offering? For those who use Amazon, the Smile program there will benefit our parish. We benefit from your returnable bottles and cans through the Clink program. Bags for this are available at both churches. Neither of these ways costs you any extra money. You can include the parish or St. Brigid School in your future planning through a bequest. If this is a possibility for you, we can show you how to do that. Ongoing contributions to our Paving Project - no matter how small - will help us get this very necessary work done at the lowest possible cost. The Twelve Days of Christmas Contrary to the "count-down-to-christmas" of the retail world, the Twelve Days of Christmas BEGIN on Christmas day (or in some cultures on Dec 26) and continue on to the Feast of Epiphany, January 6th. The "Twelfth Night" of Christmas is the eve of Epiphany, Jan 5th (though we are having our party on Saturday the 6th!). In the not-so-distant past (my mother remembered it this way) gifts were exchanged on Epiphany "Little Christmas" not December 25th. The Christmas Season is a time of celebrating the birth of Jesus, but not as an anniversary of a past event, rather a birth that is happening right now. Nativity sets centuries ago were made of characters is contemporary dress, not that of the ancient world. Many of the customs and images of the Christmas season make sense not so much as celebrations of the nativity but rather as signs of fulfillment in Christ. We stuff breads with harvest bounty and bake them in the form of crowns and wheels. We drive the darkness away with lights and greenery and blazing flowers. We send greetings of peace, we give gifts out of love. In a parish I once served, the neighbor across the street behind the rectory used to have elaborate decorations on and in his house starting on Thanksgiving weekend, but by Christmas afternoon, all was dark and taken down. That certainly misses the point of how the community of faith celebrates this season. I hope that after a month of extra busy-ness for many of us, we can take time to linger in front of the tree or the manger scene, to connect with friends and also spend a bit of time thanking God during these Twelve Days of Christmas. 6 VIII School News St. Brigid School Stevens Avenue Portland, Maine William Burke - Principal Mary-Ann Russo - Director of Institutional Advancement Adorations Tuesday Evenings 7:00 to 8:00 PM St. Joseph Church Fridays 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM St. Pius X Church Rosary Devotion Monday through Thursday following 9:00 AM Mass St. Pius X Church Dear Parishioners, The month of December, the season of Advent, and my role as a member of St. Brigid School community have all come together to provide me with a window into the human condition. The past few weeks have been full of anticipation, human emotion, and experiences that shape the lives of all the people I work with each and every day. The anticipation and build up towards Christmas can be found all over the school. Classrooms are decorated and the nativity story is heard on a daily basis. The generosity of our students, families, staff, and benefactors take many shapes and forms. From stuffing a METRO bus with toys, the large number of sweets and eats delivered to the school, the increasing number of parents participating in classroom parties and events, and the generosity exhibited by people who wish to see our school grow by sharing their time, talent, and resources. Hand in hand with the anticipation of Christmas is the human emotion that defines who we are as a people. During Advent, I have witnessed the humanness of the people I encounter on a daily basis. Each day is filled with opportunity to make the choice to act with kindness, be an attentive listener, and to put the gospel message of Jesus into action. We are all shaped by our experiences and must also remember that the choices we make can also impact our immediate and distant futures. The number of experiences that I have witnessed in the school community this past month have run the gamut of human emotion and must have certainly tested the faith of many people. The birth of a child, The death of a loved one. The satisfaction of a job well done. A student dealing with a changing friendship. The joy of making high honors or scoring a basket in a grade 1 basketball game. These experiences stay with us, inform our future, and make us who we are becoming. Into this world, God sent his son Jesus to show us the way to salvation and to build a kingdom based on love. As we anticipate the coming of the new year, let s pray for God s guidance as we work with one another to shape the world by following the example of the gospel message of Jesus.
