It s a busy time of year and it s going to get busier. Be sure the parish office has your address so you can receive the most current information on what s happening at your parish. Feel free to call the parish office ( ), the parish office Linda.McCormack@Portlanddiocese.org, drop a note in the offertory basket with your name and address on it or on the home page of the parish website Subscribe to our list for Bulletins and Events (Click Here) and we ll get you all set up to be in the know. As the commercial world prepares to end Christmas (12/24 at the latest), the Christian community is called to begin the celebrations. In our tradition the Twelve Days of Christmas begin on Dec 25 (or 26) and continue to January 6 th the Feast of Epiphany. Christmas week itself has several feasts: Dec 26, the Feast of Stephen, Dec 27, the feast of St. John, a time to toast each other s good health. The Feast of the Holy Innocents reminds us that God s coming to our world was not welcome by all and a reminder of the suffering of the innocent in our world today. At Epiphany we look to see signs of light and hope in the midst of the struggles of the world. There is a wisdom in celebrating these days of the Christmas season. Some families make it a point to say a little prayer at the Christmas crib these days. Others move the figures of the kings closer to the stable as Epiphany comes closer. We might use some moments by the tree or the crib to recall the blessings this past year has brought and to place before God our hopes for 2019.

4 Faith Formation Religious Education Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle December Intentions Members and friends of our parish are invited to join our Prayer Circle - no meetings or dues! Just a commitment to pray for the monthly intentions. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. The Pope s December Prayer Intention Evangelization In the Service of the Transmission of Faith. That the Church, and each of us, may tell the story of our faith and of God s love in a way that reaches the hearts and minds of our friends and neighbors. 3. Lord, in these Advent weeks of waiting for You, help us to be touched by all the small signs of peace and joy which are in our midst. Faith Formation I wanted to give the parish an update on what is happening in our Sunday morning Faith Formation classes. We meet weekly at St. Brigid School from 8:55 to 9:55 AM. We have great catechists, so willing to share faith with the children. Our kindergarten class uses Seeds which is published by Pflaum. This program uses the Sunday readings on the child s level to help them learn about Jesus. Our Level (Grade 1) and Level 2 (Grade 2) use Sadlier texts to help give them basic knowledge of their faith and prepare them for Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Our diocese has a two-year sacramental preparation program with several parent / child meetings for each level to help family faith formation. Our grades 3, 4 and 5 are combined as a group and use Venture, also published by Pflaum. It uses the Sunday readings and applies them to their everyday life. If you have a child in 3 rd, 4 th. or 5 th Grade they are more than welcome to join our program. The 3 rd, 4 th. and 5 th graders really enjoy the program. We had our child safety program Circle of Grace early in the fall. It is a great faith-based safety program. Before Thanksgiving the children made a turkey ornament listing the things they are thankful for in their lives. In December all grades made Christmas cards for Recovering Soldiers who are at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, DC. They wished the soldiers merry Christmas and thanked them for their service to our country. The children did an awesome job on the cards. Lastly the children will be making ornaments of the Holy Family to take home for their Christmas Trees at home. We also have restarted Liturgy of the Word for children in the lower grades. We meet one or two Sundays a month depending on school vacation. It takes place at the 10:00 AM Mass at. The schedule is in our weekly bulletin. Thank You Sandy Litcher Welcome to Fr. Ed Quinnan, S.J. Fr. Ed Quinnan, S.J. is joining us for Christmas this year. He is the Jesuit Provincial s assistant for Parish Ministry, and he s making a special visit to help us with the Christmas season Masses since Fr. Levens is not able to give us help this year. Welcome to a Maine Christmas, Fr. Ed! Liturgy of the Word Sundays 10:00 AM Mass January 6 th January 20 th February 3 rd March 3 rd March 17 th April 7 th May 5 th May 19 th IV Our Lady of Hope Parish (EIN: ) has been issued a $30.99 donation from the AmazonSmile Foundation as a result of AmazonSmile program activity between July 1 and September 30, Thanks to our customers shopping at smile.amazon.com, AmazonSmile has donated over $100 million to charities around the world! smile.amazon.com/ch/ A Christmas Time Prayer Lord Jesus, we thank you that when the world was very dark you came to bring light into our darkness. You came in the night to bring light into the lives of Mary and Joseph. You came to Bethlehem then, as now, a very troubled town bringing light to all who came to trust you. You come to us now, into our lives and into our world, bringing light still to your people. We ask you now once again to accept this worship that we bring as we come again to the manger. Help us to see there the light that will shine for us, not just at Christmas but every day of the year. John Harvey

Campion Center 319 Concord Rd Weston, MA We pray for his speedy recovery. The First Noel is one of the oldest Christmas ballads still sung today. It was first in print in 1833 but goes back at least 300 years before that. Both England and France claim it, thus the two spellings: The First Nowell or The First Noel. Most probably written by a person unable to read, the song gets some of the biblical points wrong (ex, having the shepherds following the star), the spirit more than makes up for its errors! Like all other carols, The First Noel was not used originally in church the clergy wouldn t allow that. These were the songs of the people and this one was often sung when the Yule log was lit at the start of Christmas. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. There will be a Christmas Carol Sing-Along Ceremony at 4:00 PM on Christmas Eve, preceding the 4:30 PM Mass at St Pius X Church. Please join us! Thank you for donations to Threads of Hope. In conjunction with a cash award, these eighth grade students will also have their essays submitted to our State Council for their perusal and potential choice of a State winner. It is with deep gratitude that the Knights would like to acknowledge all of the teachers at St. Brigid s School but especially Lori Newman and Sue McCuller, our eighth grade teachers. We most certainly want to acknowledge a debt of gratitude to St. Brigid s Principal, Mr. William Burke, who enthusiastically supports our efforts. The Christmas Message Peace on earth to all of good will This past month was the 70 th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, not long after the horrors of World War II. We sing of the angels message of peace at Christmas. Practicing it is more difficult and very specific. Perhaps we can think of how we can live by these principles of non-violence as we sing the Christmas song of peace? Respect for the opponent as a fellow human being; care for everyone involved in a conflict; refusal to harm, damage or degrade people/ living things/the earth; belief that everyone is capable of change; appeal to the humanity of the opponent; recognition that no one has a monopoly of the truth, so trying to bring together different truths; belief that the means have to be consistent with the ends; openness rather than secrecy; if suffering is inevitable, the readiness to take it upon oneself rather than inflict it on others; not retaliating to violence with violence. from A Religious Perspective on Peacemaking by Kathy Galloway.
