Anyone interested in learning more about what it means to become a Catholic Christian, should contact the parish office. Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated at scheduled Liturgies. Parishioners who are expecting a child should contact the office at least two months in advance, or as soon as possible to make arrangements and meet with the Baptismal Preparation Team. Reconciliation Also known as penance or confession, the Sacrament of Penance is regularly available every Saturday at 3:30pm in the church. Individual appointments may also be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated communally during the seasons of Advent and Lent. Marriage Engaged parishioners who are interested in being married at St. Timothy Parish must contact one of the priests at least six months in advance. Call the office regarding Marriage Preparation classes. Sacrament of the Sick Praying for healing in body, mind and soul has always been a part of the Church s ministry to those who are ill. Anyone who is seriously ill or anticipating hospitalization, may celebrate the Sacrament on Saturdays following the 9am Mass, or upon request. Devotion/Prayer Groups Rosary is said Monday through Saturday prior to morning Mass. Guild of St. Timothy The Guild normally meets monthly. Please refer to the bulletin. New Jerusalem Charismatic Prayer Group meets on Thursday from 7:30-9pm. All are welcome!

One Size Fits All Sock Drive Thank you to all who participated in the One Size Fits All BHCHP Sock Drive. Through your generosity, we were able to collect over 450 pairs of socks for the homeless. Social Outreach Thanks you to all who have contributed to Birthday Wishes! These small parties will bring joy to homeless children. For April, we continue our focus on the homeless. We will be collecting new blankets, new sheet sets, dishes and pots and pans. The MA Coalition for the Homeless will provide pick-up for furniture. The first pickup is April 23. Please mark your calendars, and most important, contact Jeannette Chambers at cprplus@norwoodlight.com, preferably, or and leave you name, phone number and address, as well as what you are donating. Items must be in good condition. Please see the list of acceptable furniture at or on the bulletin board in the Ruocco Center. All 9 th grade students and their families are invited to attend a presentation and discussion with Linda Thayer on Respect for Life issues. This presentation will take place this Sunday, April 15 th during the 9 th graders normally scheduled class time (6-7:30). Please be sure to join us for this very important presentation! Grade 9 Reminders Students in grade 9 who have not yet submitted their Confirmation sponsor information should do so ASAP. Grade 10 Reminders Confirmation Rehearsal will be held on Monday, April 23 rd from 7-8:30 pm. Students will need to attend with their sponsors. If a sponsor is unable to attend, a parent must attend in their place. Confirmation will be held on Friday, April 27 th from 7-8:30 pm. Please remember the dress code- Young ladies: Skirts/dresses that are knee length and tops/dresses with spaghetti straps or that are strapless must be covered by a sweater. Young men: Dress pants and shoes, shirts and ties. Jackets are optional but many do wear them. Passion Play Participants On behalf of Mrs. Campion and myself, we just wanted to extend our gratitude for all that you did to make this year's Passion Play such a tremendous success. The feedback we have received has been very positive and many have commented on how moving and inspiring the play was. We are tremendously grateful for the time you dedicated to this, for the number of rehearsals, both at home and at St. Tim's that you did, and for your willingness to participate in this very important event. 5 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor A few people asked if they could have a copy of the homily I gave at the Good Friday service. I think listening to me once is more than enough, but here is what I said: On March 9 th of this year, the N Y Times printed a rather controversial ad. It stated that it was time for liberal and nominal Catholics to leave the Church. What sparked the ad was the recent controversy surrounding the recent mandate from the Dept. of Health and Human Services. The ad stated that the Catholic Church s attitude to reproductive freedom was dragging society back to the dark ages. It challenged Catholics to choose women s rights over the bishop s wrongs. It further stated that the Church was basically an anti democratic old boys club that causes misery, poverty, unwanted pregnancies and death. It faulted the Church for not allowing women to be ordained; it stated that parochial schools turn their students into future obedient donors and voters; and that the Church s response to the sexual abuse crisis was inadequate and wrong. The ad was certainly not a ringing endorsement of the Catholic Church and its mission. Having spent a little bit of time in Haiti and I m sure Fr. Emerson could second this observation from his years in So. America, a great deal of this ad is patently untrue. In Haiti, for example, the Church is one of the few institutions that provide food, clothing, health care, and education for the people of that impoverished nation and it never asks your religious affiliation or the details of your life before offering assistance. Many people do not realize that second only to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts itself, the Catholic Church is the largest provider of social services, and again those services are provided without a check on a person s religious affiliation. I am fairly certain that my parochial school education did not turn me into an unthinking robot and in fact that education is one of the greatest gifts I have received. Having said that, for many people today, it is a struggle to remain an active member of the Church. If you feel called to ministry and feel that that door is closed to you, that is a challenge. If you or someone you know is divorced, the Church s teaching on marriage can be a challenge. If you or someone you know has a same sex attraction then the Church s position in that regard can be a challenge. The Church s teachings on war and peace; on capital punishment; on euthanasia; on immigration all these issues can pose major challenges as well. No doubt at times indeed lots of times it can be a struggle to remain in this large, multinational entity we call the Roman Catholic Church. But, this is not a new reality. It has always been a struggle and challenge to live in the Church and indeed to follow Christ. Did not Jesus say that to be a disciple means picking up one s cross daily daily and walk in His footsteps footsteps that led Him to the cross and will lead us to the cross at times as well? To be a person of faith means embracing a very complex reality. Faith can bring great comfort and solace it can also bring great challenge and struggle. The Church and Jesus challenge us with great ideals; they ask us to look at life in a unique way; they ask us to stretch beyond our comfort zones. But the Church and Jesus also remind us that just because we do not achieve all those ideals at a particular moment in our lives does not mean that we are failures. It does not mean that we are sinners. It does not mean that there is not a home for us in the Church or in the arms of Jesus. The bottom line must always be that Jesus loves all of us unconditionally, and as a church we must strive to do the same. I would like to close with two examples of people who, in my judgment, made the Church a better and more Christ like place. Francis of Assisi lived at a time in the Church s history when the Church was very corrupt. It seemed obsessed with the desire for riches and power. It certainly was not the Church envisioned by Christ. But through the grace of God, Francis did not walk away from the Church but set out to rebuild it, and by the grace of God he did help the Church of his day to turn back to the ways of Jesus. The second example was Pope John XXIII. Elected at 78 years of age a career Vatican insider he was elected with the hope that he would be a maintenance oriented Pope who would keep the Church on an even keel and not rock the boat. Yet John sensed the winds of change in society and by the grace of God and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit he summoned the Second Vatican Council and helped the Church to be in dialogue with the world. People sometimes ask me if I would have liked to have been a pastor in the 50 s and 60 s. Those were the days when churches were full; you could say the stupidest things and people would say, at least to your face, what an insightful remark Father; you didn t worry about finances or what the Boston Globe might print. In those days I would probably have made it to be the pastor of a big parish with two or three curates to do my bidding. It s a lot different today I only have Fr. Emerson to order around, and if truth be told, he calls most of the shots in the rectory. Is it a struggle to be a priest today? In some ways, yes. The future is a bit more uncertain; we are asked to do more with less. But we don t get to choose the times in which we live or the challenges we face. This is true of us all. What we are asked to be is people of faith, hope and charity. We are asked to walk in faith with Christ, and in His Church both when doing those things is easy, but especially when doing those things are difficult. Like Francis and Pope John we are asked to rebuild the Church and make it more Christ like. To do that is hard work. It involves a great amount of energy and commitment; great faith and great grace; great patience and a forgiving heart. Working together and with God s help and grace we can help to rebuild the Church, but that will involve the cost of discipleship, but that is what it means to walk with Jesus and with Him to carry our cross.
