November is here, and that means snow is right around the corner. As most of you who have been receiving this newsletter for some time know, this is when the UCY/UCYA office kicks into high gear for the winter. We have a brand new executive and an exciting schedule coming up, and I hope many of you can join us for some of them! As usual, I would like to start off with some thanks. The World Youth Day traveling icon made its arrival in Winnipeg at the beginning of the month and visited several parishes throughout the city and surrounding area. It will continue its trip in Winnipeg into November before it moves on to its next destination. Many thanks go out to all the parishes who hosted the icon and those who will be hosting it in November. Please see the events on the back page of the newsletter to see where the icon will be traveling in the next few weeks. Secondly, On Thursday, October 18 and Friday, October 19, the youth and young adults traveling to Australia for World Youth Day helped to serve at the fundraising event for the St. Nicholas parish Raising the Roof campaign. Entitled Ivanka Chews the Fat, the two evenings of comedy "Education is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know." Daniel J. Boorstin UCY/UCYA Winnipeg From The Director s Chair A Recently Spotted Bumper Sticker: I bet Jesus would use HIS turn signals! November 2007 performance and dinner enabled the youth to receive some of the proceeds to help offset their cost to travel to Australia. Thank you to all! You did a wonderful job! Finally, on October 26 to 27, the Bi-annual Convention of the Ukrainian Catholic Council was held. During the Saturday afternoon session, a special youth component was held in which participants took the Myers-Briggs personality profile to help them discover what gifts they could bring to the Church. After a brief discussion, elections were held for a new executive for the term. Welcome to all our new members and thank you to all of our departing members for your hard work over the past two years. Please see page 2 for a list of the executive members. Also, I would like to thank all the parishes and participants for the great diverse showing at this year s youth convention. I was extremely glad to see representation from many areas in the city and different age groups. Coming up this month, members of the Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adults will be attending a special presentation by Dr. Patch Adams. Entitled the Art of Healing, this presentation will be the keynote for the Interfaith Health Conference on November 29 th. Moving on to upcoming events, this year we will once again be creating ornaments for the Holy Family Nursing Home, this time with members of the youth and young adults. This will take place in late November. During our annual caroling to the nursing home, we will again deliver the ornaments to the residents. Keeping with the Christmas theme, the youth and young adults will again be involved with Operation Christmas Child, in which participants fill shoe boxes with needed items to be delivered to less fortunate children during the holidays. If you would like more information on how to participate, please call me at or visit your local Safeway. That s all for now, see you in December & the start of the 6th year of this publication! Thank you for your support in reading this newsletter month after month! Yours in Christ, Tamara Lisowski "If we'd only stop trying to be happy we'd have a pretty good time." Edith Wharton

5 Volume 5, Issue 10 Page 5 Our Young Adults: Where Do They Fit In? by Tamara Lisowski, Youth and Young Adult Coordinator for the Archeparchy of Winnipeg Over the past six years, I had the opportunity to work with individuals ranging in age from 13 to 35 as coordinator of the Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adults. I have seen these individuals, regardless of their age, work side by side and share their talents and ideas with each other to come up with some very interesting projects and activities. A number of them have even brought friends from outside of our Church to events and meetings and they in turn have become active members in various parishes. I am constantly refreshed by their positive outlook on things despite the fact that they have to juggle school, jobs and other activities outside of church and still find time to give back to their parishes. It was much to my surprise, then, when I found out that some parishes would not financially support some young adults to attend Archeparchial functions as they were over 18. Needless to say, the individuals were deeply upset. They had given so much of their time and energy to their parishes and to the Archeparchial youth, often in ways that were not always obvious, but because of age were excluded from joining in community with the rest of the Church at these events. When trying to find a rationale behind this, one answer I was given was that the young adults were old enough to make their own money to pay for things and should not need any financial support. Anyone who knows someone enrolled in College or University knows how tight finances can be. The majority of the money they make from part-time jobs often goes straight to supplies and tuition and, for those who live in residence, food and rent. Yet we do not bat an eye at financing individuals who are already well-established in their careers to attend conferences. In the end, we are left with a fairly significant group of young people between the ages of 18 and 35 who are very eager to grow in their faith but feel marginalized. The late Sr. Marie Bielski, SSMI, recognized the potential of this group and, just prior to her repose in the Lord, launched Unity as an event to bring these individuals across Canada together. After attending the past three, I wonder why this sense of community among our young people cannot be translated to community between all of our generations in the parishes. I am constantly asked the question about why there are so few young people in the Church, ignoring the fact that the ones who are there are working twice as hard. While it is important to worry about who is not in church, let s not forget about the ones who are there and honour and support their accomplishments. The following are points taken directly from the Ukrainian Catholic Youth Constitution that I would like to emphasize: VII. GOALS OF U.C.Y.C. MINISTRY To journey with youth to full responsibility and participation in the life, mission, and work of our faith community. Young people are full members of the faith community here and now in the present. They are equal partners and should be fully involved in Church life and community life. Youth have talents that should be developed and used to enrich the Body of Christ. Youth ministry seeks to draw young people into a supportive experience of the local Christian community. This is accomplished by training, practice, and togetherness. Young people and adults must be open to youth having a vital role in parish life. Youth ministry seeks to make parishes youth-friendly. This means that parishes value the talents of young people. Parishes should celebrate the dynamism of youth. Parishes should demonstrate that they value and celebrate young people by tapping into this vital resource. Ideally, parishes do this by listening to youth and supporting them with prayer, time, facilities, and financial resources. It is so important for parishes to recognize the need to become youth-friendly if they are to benefit from the loyalty and active participation of youth. (con t on page 6)
6 Page 6 (con t from page 5) News from out & about! The Inspiring Message of 'Bella' by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson Once in a great while, a movie comes along that has the ability to touch hearts in a profound way with its positive message. During the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, the Vatican released a list of such movies as the Vatican Top 45 movies ever made. IX. MEMBERSHIP All youth, young men, and young women, of the Ukrainian Catholic Church community are eligible for membership in the organization. The programs can be directed to 3 levels. The levels reflect the different needs of the varying ages of youth. The three levels are: Junior High, Senior High, and Young Adults. SECTION F. CONVENTIONS The Eparchial Conventions shall consist of at least one session for administrative purposes, but most of the convention sessions should pertain to real concerns and needs of youth. This could take the form of a conference or a youth rally. Every parish shall be encouraged by the Eparchial Youth Ministry Team to send as many participants as possible to attend the Eparchial Convention. A few months ago, I had the chance to see another movie that I believe is similar in both its quality, and in its powerful moral message. That movie is Bella a film that will be released this year, and has already won the Toronto Film Festival the largest film festival in the world. Bella tells the story of a young unwed mother, and how the pure love of a friend helps her choose life. It is a heart warming film, and it presents a message that I believe will appeal to people who have never given much thought to the culture of life. It is not a film about what people shouldn t do, it is a film that time and again shows us what we should do, and inspires us to do it. As a result, I believe this film is one the Knights of Columbus should support. Our support can take many forms. First, and most important, I would like to ask that you see this film. Second, I would ask that you tell your friends about it. Finally, I hope that you will consider working with your council and local parish to purchase and sell tickets to the film in the week before it is released. It is my belief that the Knights of Columbus can help make this film a success, thereby sending a message to Hollywood that wholesome movies will be well received at the box office. In this way, we can begin the process of moving the film industry in a direction that can help rather than hurt our children. This year, I ask you to join your brother knights in promoting this movie to bring a message of hope to Hollywood.

According to a researcher (sic) at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be at the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself but the word as a whole. Finding Your Way! Reverend Billy Graham tells of a time early in his ministry when he arrived in a small town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was. When the boy had told him, Dr. Graham thanked him and said, "If you'll come to the Baptist Church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven." The boy replied, "I don't think I'll be there... You don't even know your way to the post office." Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Forty Faith is the assurance of things hoped for... (Hebrews 11:1) "Christ freed Peter from the fear which had seized him on the stormy lake. Christ enables us too to overcome the difficult moments in life, if with faith and hope we turn to him and ask his help." --Pope John Paul II, Poznan, Poland Think About That Faith and hope are the opposites of fear. Fear will always paralyze us and keep us from doing what we could do if we did not have fear. In the difficult moments of life it is easy to give in to our fear, but it is in these moments that we must have the greatest trust in the Lord. Take Action This week you will experience something difficult. When that happens, pause and say a prayer. Ask God to help you. Ask God to give you faith and hope that you can make it through the difficult experience. Say A Prayer Dear God, when life is difficult help me to turn to you rather than be consumed by fear and doubt. I know that in you all things are possible and that you love me. Did You Know? 9 Volume 5, Issue 10 Page 9 Overflowing Gratitude Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR Here's a thought based on Oprah's book club: Sit down at the end of each day and write out 5 things for which you are grateful. We go through life each day so unaware, and take for granted so many things. There are those persons, unseen and unknown, to whom we need to be grateful. We take for granted turning on a light switch. We assume electricity will light the lamp, but how about the people that keep the system running? Same for the water, and the supermarket. We walk in and everyday it's filled with food. How did it get on the shelves; how did it get to the stores; how did it get out of the fields; how did it first get planted? Everyday we need to overflow with gratitude. Looking at life from such a perspective will begin to change our daily attitude towards all life, and, possibly, even towards our self and others. Too many of us strive for new abilities instead of striving to develop abilities we already have lying dormant within us. Alfred A. Montapert Until you make peace with who you are, you'll never be content with what you have. Doris Mortman "Only those risking to go far will ever know how far they can go." Anonymous God is Whispering Faber "There is hardly ever a complete silence in our soul. God is whispering to us well-nigh incessantly. Whenever the sounds of the world die out in the soul, or sink low, then we hear these whisperings of God. He is always whispering to us, only we do not always hear, because of the noise, hurry and distractions which life causes as it rushes on." Thought for the Month! Fellow citizens, why do you turn and scrape every stone to gather wealth and take so little care of your children, to whom one day you must relinquish it all. Socrates

This will be our first meeting with the new executive members for Saint s Corner Also known as Andreas the Apostle; Endres the Apostle Memorial 30 November Name Meaning strong, manly (Andrew) Profile The first Apostle. Fisherman. Brother of Simon Peter. Follower of John the Baptist. Went through life leading people to Jesus, both before and after the Crucifixion. Missionary in Asia Minor and Greece, and possibly areas in modern Russia and Poland. Martyred on an saltire (x-shaped) cross, he is said to have preached for two days from it. Andrew was at first a disciple of John the Baptizer along with John the Theologian. When the Forerunner pointed out Jesus as the Christ, they both became His disciples. Andrew took his brother, Saint Peter, to meet Jesus. He is called the Protokletos (the First Called) because he was the first Apostle to be summoned by Jesus into His service. Andrew and his brother Peter made their living as fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. Both men became Apostles, and while Peter symbolically came to represent the Church of the West, Andrew likewise represents the Church of the East. Some peculiar marriage-related superstitions have attached themselves to Saint Andrew's feast day. One says that young women should note the location of barking dogs on Saint Andrew's Eve: their future husbands will come from that direction. Another is that on the day after Andrew's feast, young people float cups in a tub; if a boy's and a girl's cup drift together and are intercepted by a cup inscribed "priest", it indicates marriage.
