I hope everyone had a safe and happy summer. For all those returning to school, University or work, may the Lord bless you for the coming year and bestow his abundant mercy on you. While I know that the summer is often a time for everyone to unwind and relax, there were a few people who were kept hopping over the summer. First of all, I would like to again thank Joan Lewandowsky and her fine group of counselors for another successful camp at Ukrainian Park. This has been Joan s eighth year as camp coordinator and she always does a fine job! Also, in mid- August a group of 14 Manitobans made the trek by car, van or airplane to Ancaster, ON for the fourth installment of Unity, the national gathering of Ukrainian Catholic young adults aged 18 to 35. The Eparchy of Toronto did a wonderful job in hosting the event, which was facilitated by Fr. Roman Dusanowskyj of Sydney, NS and our own Sr. Janet Kozak, SSMI of Winnipeg. Using the theme Life on the Edge, we knew we were in for an eventful weekend when Fr. Roman literally went over the edge and repelled down three stories of Mount Mary Academy for his grand entrance! Our Winnipeg participants from St. Joseph s parish and the Welcome Home also played a key role on opening night by staging the play on the life of Blessed Vasyl, which incorporated people from all of the eparchies present. Special thanks go to Fr. John Sianchuk and Mary-Jane Kalenchuk and Andrew Popiel for transporting all the materials in The Beast from Winnipeg and to Jay Korban for making a special day trip to play his role of Metropolitan Slipyj before flying We cannot hold a torch to light another s path without brightening our own." Ben Sweetland Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News Volume 7, Issue 8 UCY/UCYA Winnipeg From The Director s Chair back to Winnipeg to perform at Folklorama the next night! Thanks also go all the Winnipeg participants for their spontaneous Manitoba song during Taste of the Eparchies. A wonderful time was had by all and I hope to see all those present on the planning team for Unity 2012 in Winnipeg! More on that later. Of course, with the fall comes the startup of new activities. As part of the ecumenical youth director s initiative, a series of workshops have been planned for the fall in various locations around Winnipeg. Along with the Anglican Church in Winnipeg, I will be co-conducting a workshop on planning youth events on a shoestring budget which will be held on Oct 7, 2009 at 7 pm. For all parish youth directors and those interested in being youth directors, this will be a good starting point. Also this fall, The Archdiocese of Winnipeg will be hosting its Theology on Tap Sessions Again. One of the speakers will be our very own Fr. Richard Soo, SJ who will be speaking about the Byzantine Rite on October 15 at 6:30pm. Please come out or bring a friend to expose them to the secrets of our Rite! But before that, we will have our first Executive meeting on Sunday, September 20 at 1pm before the 2 nd Annual start of the pastoral year kickoff BBQ at the Chancery! The BBQ will start at 2pm and I am looking forward to seeing all the parish youth again and hearing all about the summer activities and vacations! Building on the success of last year s sports day at St. Andrew s Parish, they will again be hosting a sports day at the parish on November 14 (Time: A Recently Spotted Bumper Sticker: 7 days without God makes one weak! September 2009 TBA). This is a great time for fellowship and a great way to kick of the fall. Come and join us! Of course, the biggest event this fall will be the bi-annual convention on October 16 thru 17at the Victoria Inn. It is at this convention where we will elect our Archeparchial executive for the term. Those who were at last year s convention will remember what a good time it was and I am glad to see so many from that convention still involved in youth events. As usual, we are hoping to allow people who wish to attend just the youth session to attend without charge and my ultimate goal is to have at least one representative from each parish or district. We hope to see you there! Finally, as I mentioned before, Unity 2012 will be held in Winnipeg to coincide with the 100 th Anniversary of the arrival of Blessed Bishop Martyr Nikita Budka to Canada. We are currently assembling a planning team for the event and our first national meeting will take place from November 6 to 8, 2009 in Winnipeg. The Winnipeg planning team will have a meeting on Wed, October 28 at 7pm. If you would be interested in being on the planning committee for this event, please call Tamara at or youth@archeparchy.ca. I know several people are still around from the first Unity in 1996 and we would love to have your input. That s all for now, see you in October. Tamara Lisowski When you are through changing, you are through. Bruce Barton

Have a seat... Relax... And read this slowly. That just because two people argue, It doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, It doesn't mean they do love each other. That we don't have to change friends if We understand that friends change.. That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that. That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love. That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life... That it's taking me a long time To become the person I want to be. That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.. That you can keep going long after you think you can't. That we are responsible for what We do, no matter how we feel. That either you control your attitude or it controls you. That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. That money is a lousy way of keeping score. That my best friend and I, can do anything, or nothing and have the best time.. That sometimes the people you expect to kick you When you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up. That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, But that doesn't give me the right to be cruel. That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated. That it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself. That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief. That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but, we are responsible for who we become. That you shouldn't be so eager to find Out a secret. It could change your life Forever. Two people can look at the exact same Thing and see something totally different. That your life can be changed in a matter of Hours by people who don't even know you. That even when you think you have no more to give, when A friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help. That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon. That you should let all of the people that you believe in read this, I just did. 'The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; They just make the most of everything. Thank you God for all the wonderful people who help us throughout the journey of life. 4 Page 4 Unity 2009!!! Awesome!!! Living on the Edge: Toronto Eparchy Hosts Unity 2009 Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News Thank you Saint Therese for favors received novena. MS by Tamara Lisowski, Archeparchial Youth Coordinator (all photos from Unity 2009 website) From August 13 to , Ukrainian Catholic Young Adults aged 18 to 35 converged on Mount Mary Retreat Centre in Ancaster, Ontario for a weekend of understanding, embracing and celebrating their faith. Entitled Life on the Edge: Unity 2009, the event continued the tradition begun in 1996 by the late Sister Marie Bielski, SSMI, of a Ukrainian Catholic Young Adult gathering for Canada and North America. Over 120 participants from across Canada and the northern United States enjoyed a prayerful and energizing weekend which was co-facilitated by Fr. Roman Dusanowskyj of Sydney, Nova Scotia and Sister Janet Kozak, SSMI, of Winnipeg. From the very beginning, the theme of life on the edge was apparent as Fr. Roman captured everyone s attention by repelling down three stories of Mount Mary Academy during the welcoming barbecue! Following ice-breaker activities, everyone joined together in the school gym for an opening prayer service honoring the Ukrainian Martyrs. Water from every part of Canada was poured into a large fountain and candles were lit to represent the participating eparchies. Paper flames bearing intentions from across Canada were then offered for a successful conference. The prayer service itself centered around Blessed Nikita Budka, Blessed Josaphata, SSMI, and included a play about the life of Blessed Vasyl, CSsR. All of these individuals played an important part in establishing and fostering the life of the Church in Canada. The following days were filled with a variety of speakers and topics. Fr. Roman and Sister Janet spoke about the importance of going over the edge and giving your life to God, while Fr. Stephen of the Sheptytsky Institute led the group in a reflection before the mystery of reconciliation. Everyone was also privileged to witness a special occasion as Bro. Alfredo Delos Santos, CSsR, renewed his monastic vows. A variety of breakout sessions offered participants a chance to experience different aspects of our Church. Bishop David and Bishop Bryan also gave people a chance to Ask the Bishops in an open forum. In the evenings, participants got to sample snacks from across the country in a taste of the eparchies and each eparchy presented a short sketch or activity. Saturday night featured a banquet and Zabava and the entire event closed on Sunday with a pontifical Divine Liturgy outdoors on beautiful day with a moving homily delivered by Fr. Andriy Chirovsky. Many thanks go the organizers of the event, Rev. Bohdan Choly and Lesia Kiska, for their hard work and determination to make this a successful event. Thanks also go to all those who helped behind the scenes and all the clergy who came out at various times to help out in many ways. We from the Archeparchy of Winnipeg look forward to hosting in 2012!

BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ! 90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death & Life As he is driving home from a minister's conference, Baptist minister Don Piper collides with a semi-truck that crosses into his lane. He is pronounced dead at the scene. For the next 90 minutes, Piper experiences heaven where he is greeted by those who had influenced him spiritually. He hears beautiful music and feels true peace. Back on earth, a passing minister who had also been at the conference is led to pray for Don even though he knows the man is dead. Piper miraculously comes back to life and the bliss of heaven is replaced by a long and painful recovery. For years Piper kept his heavenly experience to himself. Finally, however, friends and family convinced him to share his remarkable story. From AudioFile Don Piper recounts the dramatic story of his ninety-minute journey to heaven. When a truck crushed his Ford Escort in a head-on collision, he was declared dead on scene. But a passing minister sensed that God wanted him to pray, so he reached through the wreckage to clasp Piper's bloody hand while he did so. Piper's incredulous voice speaks of what he believes he saw: heaven's luminous gates through which he could see streets paved with gold, as well as relatives and loved ones who surrounded him yet wouldn't let him pass through because it wasn't his time. This incredible story is one of faith and inspiration. G.D.W. AudioFile 2006, Port- Or 98f102c77b625cf37a9e7744ac68 MUSIC YOU SHOULD HEAR! Fearless [CD] With nearly two million records sold and a string of hits including 18 #1 singles worship veterans Phillips, Craig and Dean continue to expand musically, while paving a road to worship that is both heartfelt and easily accessible to congregations.

JS - On the Lighter Side - Communion Confusion My daughter, Laura, went with me to buy some grape juice for our church's communion service. Telling her it was for the Lord's Supper, I put it in the refrigerator. Later, her older brother, Jonathan, saw it and wanted some. Laura scolded, "No, that's for God's lunch!" Praying Before Meals Our three-year-old grandson, Daniel, stayed with us while his parents went on a weekend trip. As usual, we bowed our heads as my husband prayed out loud before all our meals. Daniel watched curiously each time his grandpa prayed. On the day his parents came to pick him up, we all sat down at the table to have lunch. Just as his daddy started to pick up his sandwich, Daniel shouted, "Wait, Daddy, we can't eat 'til Grandpa reads his plate!" Conference Confusion Our ecumenical group of clergy was discussing the different kinds of conferences we might have and I suggested marriage enrichment. The minutes of the meeting that arrived a few days later carried a surprising entry: "Discussion was held about our next Cooperative Community Conference. It was suggested that Mary Jean Richement might be our conference leader." Paying with Plastic When I returned home from a shopping trip, my husband asked how I had paid for everything. "Plastic," I replied. My 10-year-old daughter piped up, "Mom, have you been recycling again?" Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Thirty-Six Draw near to God... (James 4:8) "Dear young people, like the first disciples, follow Jesus! Do not be afraid to draw near to Him, to cross the threshold of His dwelling, to speak to Him face to face, as you talk with a friend." --Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day XII Think About That Take a minute to think about the best conversation you have ever had with a friend. What did you talk about? How did it feel to talk so openly and honestly with a friend? That's how we are to talk with Jesus--as if he were your best friend whom you can tell anything, with whom your secrets are safe. Take Action This week write a letter to Jesus as if he were your best friend. What do you want to tell him? What do you want him to know about you? What do you want to ask him? What do you want to know about him? Say A Prayer Jesus, thank you for being my friend. I am happy to know that I can talk to you as I would talk to my best friend. Did You Know? The Pope's maternal grandparents were Feliks and Anna Kaczorowska. His maternal grandfather was a packsaddle maker. Taken from...my Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. Abraham Lincoln Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is! Anne Frank Ways to Learn Mark Link, S.J., Illustrated Sunday Homilies, Year-B, Series I Suppose you are called up to a table and are blindfolded. Suppose a bucket is placed in front of you and you are asked if it is empty or full of water. What are three ways you can learn the answer to that question without removing the blindfold? One way is to reach into the bucket and feel if there is water in it. In other words, you can experience firsthand if the bucket is full or empty. This way of learning is called experiencing. It s knowledge that we acquire by our senses. A second way to learn if the bucket contains water or not is to drop an object, like a pebble, into it. If the pebble hits the bottom of the bucket with a loud thud or ringing sound, you know the bucket is empty. On the other hand, if the pebble hits with a splash, you know the bucket contains water. This way of acquiring knowledge is called reasoning. A third way to learn if the bucket contains water is to ask someone you trust. The person could look into the bucket and tell you if it has water in it. This way of learning is called believing. Its knowledge that we acquire by faith. Experiencing, reasoning, believing these are the three ways we acquire knowledge in this life. Instead of always harping on a man s faults, tell him of his virtues. Try to pull him out of this rut of bad habits. Hold up to him his better self, his real self that can dare and do and win out. Eleanor H. Porter The Wait-A-Bit Bush Source Unknown While traveling, a tourist noticed a curious shrub growing near the roadside. His companion informed him that the local people call it the wait-a-bit bush. Stepping closer to inspect it more closely, his clothes touched it, and he found himself snared by thorns which resembled fish hooks. The more he struggled to free himself, the more he became entangled by its barbs. Finally he had to rely on his companion to release him from the hopeless situation. There are many wait-a-bit bushes along the road of life. Men and women can easily be hooked by some evil habit, or sinful influences. They can become overly concerned with material goals which can entangle their life and detain them from answering the all-important questions of life. Thought for the Month! Striving for perfection is the greatest stopper there is. You ll be afraid you can t achieve it. It s your excuse to yourself for not doing anything. Instead, strive for excellence, doing your best."
