2 Page 2 Check out the youth & young adult web page: What s Up with The Bible? Found at: How the Bible Became More than Pages of Tissues Angie Smith June 9, 2015 "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) One of the first things I learned about successfully fitting in with Christians was the power of nodding my head. It made people think I understood things I didn t, and it masked the insecurity and frustration of feeling like the Bible was never going to make sense to me. So, when they said things like, "I m so inspired by Paul s courage," I would bob my head and make a mental note to investigate it later. When they upped the ante with phrases like, "This story takes place in modern-day Iraq," I nodded. I couldn t point to modern-day Iraq on a map if my life depended on it, let alone do the mental bridge-building to get to the part where this realization was as euphoric as it seemed to be for other people. Have you ever felt like that? It s all over your head and you re counting the minutes until you can leave the situation that reminds you that you aren t smart enough to "get it." And it s the worst. It s the absolute WORST. I m a relatively bright person, and I tend to pick things up (fairly) quickly. But the Bible? That was different. I just couldn t make sense of it. So many pages. Such thin, thin pages. Like tissue that taunted me. That s what the Bible was to me for many years: taunting pages of tissue. Eventually I became so frustrated that I walked into my local Christian bookstore and asked where the children s section was. Then I sat cross-legged on the floor, thumbing through the bright photos and short summary stories for a few hours. And don t laugh, because it actually helped me. I bought a few children s storybook Bibles and after I finished my classes each day, I would sit on the balcony of our apartment and read. Slowly, without letting the voice of condemnation speak louder than the voice of devotion. That was my start of reading and understanding the Bible. I ve had other Bibles since then, and I m thankful I didn t give up trying. Because the more I read, the more I began to understand the bigger story of Scripture. Maybe you can relate? You love the stories you ve heard, but aren t sure how they fit together. Or maybe you understand it from an academic perspective, but you can t quite get your heart to care. Or possibly, you ve simply done what you could to understand enough to get by in a small group, yet you go home feeling like you re behind the curve. I want you to remember something very important: The Bible wasn t written just for a few experts to understand while baffling the rest of us. Did you hear that? The Bible was written for all of us, and as our key verse reminds us, it helps equip us for every good work God intends us to do. With that being the case, I want you to erase any part of your selftalk that says you aren t smart enough or educated enough or even spiritual enough. Deal? As we commit to reading God s Word and not giving up, we re throwing off anything that has held us back. And we re moving forward in full confidence that He will bless us with the desire of our hearts to know Him better. Father, thank You for sharing Your perfect Word with us. Help us to overcome our fear that we aren t smart enough to understand it. I want to know You better and am willing to do whatever it takes. In Jesus Name, Amen. TRUTH FOR TODAY: Psalm 19:7, "The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple." (NIV) Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (ESV) REFLECT AND RESPOND: How did Angie s experience of feeling lost or stupid trying to study the Bible resonate with you? What have been your own challenges in studying the Bible? What are some steps you will take this week to devote yourself to better understanding God s Word? REQUESTS & SUBMISSIONS ~ youth@archeparchy.ca

4 Page 4 Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News Royal Doors ~ English Language Resources for Ukrainian Greek Catholics THE DORMITION [THE FALLING ASLEEP THE ASSUMPTION] OF THE MOST-HOLY BIRTH-GIVER OF GOD August 16, 2011 The Lord Who, on Mt. Sinai, commanded by His Fifth Commandment: Honor your father and your mother (Exodus 20:12), showed by His own example how one should respect one s parent. Hanging on the Cross in agony, He remembered His mother and indicating to the Apostle John, said to her: Woman behold your son (St. John 19:26). After that, He said to John: Behold your mother (St. John 19:27). And so providing for His mother, He breathed His last. John had a home on Zion in Jerusalem in which the Theotokos settled and remained there to live out the end of her days on earth. By her prayers, gentle counsels, meekness and patience, she greatly assisted the apostles of her Son. Primarily, she spent her entire time in Jerusalem often visiting those places which reminded her of the great events and of the great works of her Son. She especially visited Golgotha, Bethlehem and the Mount of Olives. Of her distant journeys, her visit to St. Ignatius the Theophorus [God-bearer] in Antioch is mentioned, as well as her visit to Lazarus (whom our Lord resurrected on the fourth day), the Bishop of Cyprus, her visit to the Holy Mountain [Athos] which she blessed and her stay in Ephesus with St. John the Evangelist [The Theologian] during the time of the great persecution of Christians in Jerusalem. In her old age, she often prayed to the Lord and her God on the Mount of Olives, the site of His Ascension, that He take her from this world as soon as possible. On one occasion, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her and revealed to her that within three days she will find repose. The angel gave her a palm-branch to be carried at the time of her funeral procession. She returned to her home with great joy, desiring in her heart once more to see in this life, all of the apostles of Christ. The Lord fulfilled her wish and all of the apostles, borne by angels in the clouds, gathered at the same time at the home of John on Zion. With great rejoicing, she saw the holy apostles, encouraged them, counseled them and comforted them. Following that, she peacefully gave up her soul to God without any pain or physical illness. The apostles took the coffin with her body from which an aromatic fragrance emitted and, in the company of many Christians, bore it to the Garden of Gethsemane to the sepulchre of [her parents], Saints Joachim and Anna. By God s Providence, they were concealed from the unbelieving Jews by a cloud. Anthony, a Jewish priest, grabbed the coffin with his hands with the intention of overturning it but, at that moment, an angel of God severed both his hands. He then cried out to the apostles for help and was healed since declaring his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Apostle Thomas was absent, again according to God s Providence, in order that a new and all-glorious mystery of the Holy Theotokos would again be revealed. On the third day, Thomas arrived and desired to venerate [kiss] the body of the Holy All-pure one. But when the apostles opened the sepulchre, they found only the winding sheet and the body was not in the tomb. That evening, the Theotokos appeared to the apostles surrounded by a myriad of angels and said to them: Rejoice, I will be with you always. It is not exactly known how old the Theotokos was at the time of her Falling Asleep but the overwhelming opinion is that she was over sixty years of age. From the Ochrid Prolog It is celebrated on August 15 (August 28, N.S. for those following the Julian Calendar) as the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

5 Volume 13, Issue 3 Page 5 MOVIES YOU SHOULD SEE! DO YOU BELIEVE? The film is "Do You Believe?," a movie that follows the lives of a dozen people as they face their own unique challenges in life and must decide what they believe about God and then what they're going to do about it. It's written by the same team that wrote the 2014 surprise hit "God's Not Dead," and released by the same studio, Pure Flix, that was behind that movie. "Do You Believe?" is a dramatically different type of movie than "God's Not Dead" different theme, different direction but many moviegoers will walk away saying it's a better movie. I know I did so much so that I watched it twice. Producer David A.R. White of Pure Flix told The Christian Post that the idea for "Do You Believe?" came after the release of "God's Not Dead," when he and some business partners were praying about their future direction. "We were trying to figure out how to follow up 'God's Not Dead,'" he said. "We felt like we established the existence of God in 'God's Not Dead,' so what's the next step? We all came up with the power of the cross and the relevancy of it. The theme of this movie is: Is the cross still relevant in today's society?" It's a movie made for non-christians and Christians alike. It forces non-christians to ask "do I believe?" but urges Christians to consider: I believe, but now what will I do? Like "God's Not Dead," it has a few "that-would-never-happen-inreal-life" moments, but it is, after all, a movie. "Do You Believe?" succeeds in part because we all can relate to at least one of the characters. It follows a young couple struggling with infertility, an elderly couple coping with the loss of a child, a woman and her daughter who are homeless, a gang member who feels convicted about his actions, a soldier suffering from PTSD, a teen mom who has been abandoned, a middle-aged man who is battling cancer, a young woman contemplating suicide, and a married physician and attorney who are both arrogant workaholics. Their lives intersect and they must all deal with the same question that a street preacher presents at the beginning: Do you believe? Highly Recommended!!! BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ! Help! I'm Bored in Church; Entering Fully Into the Divine Liturgy Paperback October 16, 2013 by David Smith (Author) Do you ever find yourself feeling bored in church? Don't despair you're not alone, and there is hope! Fr. David Smith offers four compelling reasons for going to church regardless of how we feel. He then explores: six reasons people sometimes feel bored in church, five ways to think about your priest, four ways you can participate more fully in services, three kinds of waiting, two kinds of prayer, and the one thing truly needful in our relationship with God. This book will help you see church as the best place you could possibly be and the place you most want to be. Quotes from the book: My original title for this book was Church is Boring. You might react to that title by saying, Of course it s boring. Finally you re admitting it. If even priests admit that church is boring, then that settles it. We can all stay home and sleep in on Sundays. Or perhaps you think it s irreverent to say, Church is boring. You re thinking, It s not right for you to speak about the Divine Liturgy like that. If the priest says church is boring, he shouldn t be a priest. You don t find church boring, and your only complaint is that it s not longer. Or it s more likely that you re in the middle. Church seems boring at times, yes. But there s something good about church as well, and so saying church is boring makes you a little uncomfortable (p. 5) Here s why you should go to church: because you get way more than you bargained for. The Church is the point in the universe where God is most present, and let me give you this advice: I think you d be the most happy you ll ever be when you re consistently in that place. What you see is not what you get you get way more than you can see. Look around at the icons, and embrace that hope that tells you those saints are with you right at that moment, and praying for you. (p. 51)

When my 23-month-old, Christopher, readily bowed his head and shut his eyes before supper a few months ago, I marveled that he was actually initiating prayer. But when I opened by eyes, I caught him snatching a green bean off my plate and making a run for it! His expression told me that he was quite satisfied with the way he had tricked me. The Secret of a Successful Marriage In On This Day by Carl D. Windsor, the page for Valentine's Day includes this anecdote: "Even the most devoted couple will experience a 'stormy' bout once in a while. A grandmother, celebrating her golden wedding anniversary, once told the secret of her long and happy marriage. 'On my wedding day, I decided to make a list of ten of my husband's faults which, for the sake of our marriage, I would overlook,' she said. "A guest asked the woman what some of the faults she had chosen to overlook were. The grandmother replied, 'To tell you the truth, my dear, I never did get around to listing them. But whenever my husband did something that made me hopping mad, I would say to myself, Lucky for him that's one of the ten!' " Good News and Bad News for Pastors Good News: You baptized four people today. Bad News: You lost two others in the swift river current. Good News: The Women's Association voted to send you a get-well card. Bad News: It passed 31 to 30. Good News: The church board accepted your job description the way you wrote it. Bad News: They also formed a search committee to find someone capable of filling the position. Good News: Your stand on nuclear disarmament has won the respect and admiration of many people. Bad News: None of them are remotely connected to your church. Good News: You finally found a choir director who approaches things your way. Bad News: The choir mutinied... Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Twenty-Four Consider your own call... (1 Corinthians 1:26) "I hope that many young men and women, inspired by sincere, apostolic zeal, will consecrate their own lives to Christ and the Church as priests and religious, or as lay people who are also ready to leave their own countries to rush to those places where workers in Christ's vineyard are scarce." --Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day VII Think About That What is Christ calling you to do? If called, would you be willing to give your life to serve Christ as a priest or a nun or a brother? Perhaps you are being called to work as a lay missionary. Would you be willing to give your life to serve as a missionary, going to places where few would be willing to go? Take Action This week, find an adult whom you respect and trust and schedule a 30-minute meeting with them. When you meet, ask them if they could see you serving Christ as a priest, vowed religious, or missionary someday. Ask what talents or gifts they see in you that could be used to serve others as a Christian. Say A Prayer Dear Lord, help me to be open to your calling. Guide me and lead me to others who can help me figure out how I am called to serve you in my life. Did You Know? The Pope had just one brother, Edmund, who was a physician. Taken from...my Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. 9 Volume 13, Issue 3 Words To Contemplate! Page 9 "To see your problem and your solution, Look in a mirror. The accomplishments of each generation Have always exceeded those of the previous generation You can do better!" William E. Bailey "Do not be afraid to aim for holiness and turn yourselves over to the love of God. Holiness does not mean performing extraordinary things but carrying out daily things in an extraordinary way that is, with love, joy and faith." Pope Francis, 10/2/2013 "There is something magical that happens to the human spirit, a sense of calm that comes over you, when you cease needing all the attention directed toward yourself and instead allow others to have the glory." Richard Carlson, Don t Sweat the Small Stuff, p. 25 "For a stalk to grow or a flower to open there must be a time that cannot be forced; nine months must go before the birth of a human child; to write a book or compose music often years must be dedicated to patient research. To find the mystery there must be patience, interior purification, silence, waiting." Saint John Paul II "Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again." Og Mandino Keep Moving Sourcebook of Wit & Wisdom, p. 1 A college class was graduating on a hot and humid day. As the graduates walked across the platform and received their diplomas from the president, he smiled, shook their hands, and said loudly, "Congratulations!" Then, in a much lower voice, one that was firm and could be heard only by the graduates, he would say, "Keep moving." He was only trying to keep the line moving across the stage, but his words were good advice for a lifetime: "Keep moving." After every achievement graduation, marriage, job promotion, even retirement the best advice is, "Keep moving." Don t stop. Don t stagnate. There is more to life than you have found thus far. This is not the end; it is only the beginning. Keep moving. Thought for the Month! "The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is by breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one." Mark Twain
