The leaves have begun to change and, even though we have had some unseasonably warm weather, we have entered the fall season. It also means that things are now back in full swing at the Archeparchial youth office. First of all, our biggest event of September was the Night for Unity Fundraiser held at Immaculate Conception Parish in Cooks Creek, MB. Approximately 200 people attended the familyfriendly event, which took place on the grounds between the grotto and church. After some opening words from Fr. Taras Kowch and Fr. Mark Gnutel, the band Sloohai took to the stage and played a lively set. People danced on the open grass well into twilight! After a brief intermission, a fireworks display and raffle was followed by a 30-minute kolomeyka in which various dancers showed off their steps. The evening concluded with a bonfire and fellowship and we are still getting rave reviews about the event! Many thanks to all the volunteers both from the Unity Team and from Immaculate Conception Parish, our MC Travis Taylor, videographer Andrew Konopelny and all those who donated to our raffle and silent auctions, especially the generous donation of two Winnipeg Jets tickets from Seasons Funeral Chapel in Oakbank, MB, and to those who donated food for the event. We raised over $2000 to go toward Unity God bless you all! Also this past month, the UCY/UCYA executive attended the memorial service of the late Mitrat Stefan "The greatest rewards come only from the greatest commitment." Arlene Blum Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News Volume 9, Issue 9 UCY/UCYA Winnipeg From The Director s Chair A Recently Spotted Bumper Sticker: About that 'love thy neighbor' thing? I meant it -- God. October 2011 Semczuk on Thursday, September 29 at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish. Fr. Semczuk was instrumental in founding the UCY and has left a great deal of his wealth for the various organizations to use in their ministry. Thanks to all the executive members who attended and to the UCWLC for inviting us and providing a wonderful meal. Moving on to October, at the beginning of the month on October 1 st and 2 nd, 8 members of the Unity 2012 planning team travelled with me to Dauphin as part of our Archeparchial parish tour to promote the event. The Dauphin tour happened to fall on the parish praznyk and we were treated to a wonderful meal prepared by the parish. During the reception, we presented our Unity 2012 PowerPoint presentation and the parishioners were extremely impressed at what good ambassadors the youth were for the church. Thanks to all the brave souls who ventured out on the 8 hour return trip and especially to Kevin Gerbrandt for transporting the Unity icon. Also in October, on Tuesday October 4 the Ecumenical Youth Ministry Leaders will host a workshop at the chancery, 233 Scotia Street on fundraising. I will be leading the workshop along with Debbie Coss of the United Church and it promises to be a fruitful and interesting event. On Sunday, October 9, our Unity 2012 team continues its tour at Thalberg, MB at 9:00 am. Future confirmed dates are October 30 at St Josephat s Parish, November 6 at St. Andrew s Parish and November 5 and 6 at St. Joseph s Parish. If we have not yet come to visit your parish and you would like us to come, please call ext. 2. Also, the thirty-fifth Convention of the Ukrainian Catholic Council of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg will be held at Canad Inns Polo Park from October The youth session will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm on Saturday, October 15 in Meeting Room G. All team members are required to attend. We will begin with supper at 6 pm on Thursday and conclude with supper at 6 pm on Friday. That s all for now. See you in November. The Trust Factor Alison Strobel She Reads Featured Author Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) Yesterday I went into a job interview junior high substitute teacher; how brave am I? When I walked out of it, I had a whole new calling. Thing is, I don t want a new calling. I like the ones I ve been living with wife, mom, novelist, children s author. I didn t think God had anything else up His sleeve, and I was okay with that. I m not a big fan of change. The man interviewing me told me he has a gift of discernment. Then he did something I ve never seen or experienced: he spoke a word over me. This kind of thing didn t happen in the church in which I was raised. To me, a gift of discernment meant having a reliable sense about whether or not someone s teaching was biblical, or if someone was telling the truth. It didn t mean God could give someone else a glimpse into His plans for me. Yet what this man told me fit, like the one missing puzzle piece, into the changes I ve been going through lately on both a personal and a professional level. As he spoke, I knew that what he was saying was truly from the Lord. But I didn t leave his office glowing with excitement. In fact, I wasn t excited at all about what he told me, despite the fact that it spoke directly to my heart. It would require that I open my hands and release things I ve been holding too tightly. And I ll be honest, part of me really doesn t want to. I like my life just as it is. Remember, God, how I m not a fan of change even when it means seeing another dream realized? The bottom line is this: I struggle with trusting God. In my novel Composing Amelia, Amelia struggles with the same thing. She d rather stay with what is familiar than trust God to give her a calling she ll love but can t envision right now. I don t want to be like Amelia. I don t want to be short-sighted, dubious of God s desire or ability to bless me, or resistant to the future He has for me. But my lack of trust, fear of the unknown, and reluctance to give up my comfortable life are threatening to hold me back from obeying Him. And that s definitely not good. So I have a choice to make. Will I believe that God s plans are better than my own? Will I risk stepping out of my comfort zone? Do I believe the growing pains I ll face will be worth the blessings that will come? Do I trust God to really take care of me? Or am I going to cower beneath my desk with my fingers in my ears and pretend like yesterday s meeting never happened? What about you? What changes is God nudging you towards that have you digging in your heels and tightening your grip on whatever you know you need to release? Do you believe the rewards are worth the pain? Or that God s perfect plan is worth leaving your complacency and comfort behind? Do you trust Him? Or are you hiding and hoping He passes you by? The unknown is scary. But ultimately for me anyway it s scarier to think of what I might miss if I don t let go. And so I say a prayer, open my hands, and peer beyond the edge of what I know, into the vast expanse of Found at: the future where a giant question mark dominates the landscape. Do you see it, too? Today let s choose to trust God and not require that we like or even understand what He is calling us to do. Let s submit to Him, believing that the path He calls us to take will always be worth the change, worth the risk, worth the effort, simply because He has chosen it for us. Dear Lord, I praise You for Your love and for Your desire to see me grow. I thank You for the promise in Scripture that You are always with us, every step of the way, regardless of whether or not we see or feel You there. Forgive my uncertainty and doubts about the future, and give me the strength to take the next step You are directing me to take. In Jesus Name, Amen. Related Resources: Do You Know God? When Amelia s and Marcus s dreams pull them in different directions, will their love for each other keep their relationship alive? Application Steps: Take time this week to memorize one of the power verses below, and spend some time journaling or praying about a situation in your life to which you can apply it. Reflections: Where is God calling me to step out of my comfort zone? What is holding me back? What would help me take that first step? Some accountability? Marking a day on my calendar on which to start? Determine what will help, and commit to it this week. Who Do I Lean On? Book 3 ~ A House of Hope Novel by Neta Jackson In the fast-paced third installment in Jackson s House of Hope series, just as Gabby Fairbanks thinks she is finally getting her life in order, new challenges to her faith and her future arise. Her mother s insurance payout will allow her a degree of financial security, and she is determined to go ahead with plans to purchase the building where she currently rents and make it available to Manna House residents, homeless women, for transitional shelter. But her husband, deep in debt from his gambling, seemingly wants her back, while Lee, her legal aid attorney, wants to escalate their friendship to the next level. Jackson uses the Chicago setting to good effect in building on previous titles from this and her Yada Yada Prayer Group series, offering an unblinkered Christian perspective on family, friendship, and personal obligations while allowing the reader to vicariously experience the remarkable range of experiences shared by those living in shelters, with not so much as a closet to call their own. --Lynne Welch Product Description You can only walk forward when you learn how to lean. Just months after her husband threw her out of their penthouse and sent their two sons away, Gabrielle Fairbanks is finally getting back on her feet. She has a job she loves at the homeless shelter, an apartment for her and the boys, caring friends, and even a new love interest. Best of all, an unexpected windfall has given her a brand-new dream--a House of Hope for homeless mothers and their children. Piece by piece, Gabby's new life is coming together--but the old one keeps dragging her back. First her husband Philip hints at a reconciliation...then hits her up for a loan to pay his gambling debts. And when Gabby tells him no, he makes a desperate move that puts them all in harm's way. How can she even think of embarking on a new venture when so much is up in the air? Gabby is realizing that she needs something far greater than her own strength or even that of her friends. That to move forward, she must first lean on the only One who knows what the future holds. The other books in the series for your continued reading: Where Do I Go? 7 Check out the youth & young adult web page: Page 7 Divine Calling - On the Lighter Side - My family is close friends with another family who faithfully attends our church. Often we spend Sunday afternoons together relaxing at our house. Recently, when I phoned our friends, their 4-year-old daughter, Alicia, answered and politely asked who was calling. To tease her, I said kiddingly, "Alicia, you come to my house almost every Sunday and you don't know who I am?" In a reverential voice, she replied breathlessly, "Jesus?" Holy Underwear When my 4-year-old son, Matthew, was dressing himself for preschool one morning, he chose to wear a pair of underpants with a Fruit of the Loom label inside. "Mommy," he explained to me, "I want to wear these because they have the fruit of the spirit in them!" The Delivery of a Child My cousin, Bill, was excited and nervous about the birth of his first child. When the anticipated day arrived, the father-to-be drove his wife Betty quickly to the hospital, speeding past the admitting entrance. "Bill, that's where we're supposed to go," Betty said. "No, Honey," Bill said. "I saw a sign that said DELIVERIES IN THE REAR." Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Thirty-Nine Be at peace among yourselves... (1 Thessalonians 5:13) "None of us is alone in this world; each of us is a vital piece of the great mosaic of humanity as a whole." -- Pope John Paul II, Israel/Palestine Think About That In speaking to the young people in Israel and Palestine, John Paul II is addressing people who have been at war with one another for more than 2,000 years. The Holy Father believes that young people can be peacemakers. In fact, he believes that young people have a unique opportunity to be builders of peace in this world. We can change the way the rest of history will unfold by recognizing that we all need one another. We must live in peace. Take Action This week when you find yourself in an argument with someone else, stop and ask yourself, "What can I do in this situation to make peace between us?" Ask the person you are arguing with this simple question, "what can we do to make peace?" At Mass on Sunday, during the sign of peace, remember this situation and feel in your heart what real peace means. Say A Prayer Lord, help me to be a peacemaker with my friends and among my friends. Did You Know? If you were to total the miles the Holy Father has traveled outside of Rome it would be equivalent to traveling more than 27 times the earth's circumference or over 2.7 times the distance between the earth and moon. Taken from...my Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. Saint s Corner Also known as Nykyta Budka, Mykyta Budka Memorial 2 April Profile Blessed Nykyta Budka (June 7, 1877, Dobromirka, Austria-Hungary - October 1, 1949, Karaganda, USSR) was a clergyman of the of Ukrainian Catholic Church who lived and worked in Austria-Hungary, Canada, Poland, and the Soviet Union. In Canada he is noted as the first bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada. He was born in a village in Zbarazh, then part of Galicia, in Austria-Hungary in Budka was ordained as a priest in L'viv, the capital of Austrian Galicia, in He was appointed the Bishop for Canada on July 15, 1912 and consecrated on October 14 that year. In Canada he became known as a strident defender of the autonomy of the Ukrainian church from the Latin hierarchy, and a fierce opponent of missionary actives amongst Ukrainian Canadian by Russian Orthodox and Protestant churches, and of secularism. He was broadly supportive of Ukrainian nationalism. [1] However he is most famous for his pastoral letter at the outbreak of World War I in which he urged Ukrainians in Canada to return to their homeland to enlist and fight. Their homeland was Austria, which happened to be at war with Canada, so this bordered on treason. This helped inflame an existing suspicion and scrutiny of the Ukrainian Canadian community by the wider public and the government that led to the internment of Ukrainians in Canada during the war. In 1927, he returned to now Polish-controlled Galicia and became vicar general of the Metropolitan Curia in L'viv. At the end of World War II, Galicia was occupied by the Soviet Union, and Budka opposed the communist-mandated separation of the Ukrainian Catholic Church from Rome, and for this he was imprisoned on April 11, 1945 along with other bishops. [2] He died in the Gulag on October 1, Born 7 June 1877 in Dobomirka, Zbarazh District, Poland (modern Ukraine) Died martyred on 1 October 1949 in a Soviet concentration camp in Karaganda Beatified 27 June 2001 by Pope John Paul II in Ukraine Canonized pending If there are any questions regarding this information, please contact ~Tamara (Monday-Thursday, 10am-3pm)~ If you have any Upcoming Events for November that you would like posted, please send them to the UCY office by October 20 to be in the next edition.
