Well, it looks as though the cool weather is here to stay, and there is no doubt that Christmas is within sight. By now you are probably trying to figure out what you will be getting everyone and making plans for visits with family and friends. Whatever your holiday schedule may bring, please do not forget that Christ is the reason for the celebration and keep Him at the centre of all you do as you prepare for and celebrate His birth. With regard to thanks, on Nov 8 I was privileged to do the opening prayer at the Interfaith Health Care Banquet at the Victoria Inn. I provided Marc Beaudry of the Catholic Health Association with a copy of my prayer and he provided me a wonderful multimedia presentation in return to accompany my words. Many thanks to Marc. Also, I would like to thank all those youth and young adults who took part in the Remembrance Day Services in their respective parishes. As for upcoming events, an informational meeting for all those interested in attending World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia will be held on Sunday, December 10 at Holy Family Parish at 7:00 pm. On Mon, Jan. 1, 2007 the annual New Year s levee will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 400 Marion St., from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. All executive members and any other youth and young adults are encouraged to attend. I would like to especially encourage everyone to go see the movie The Nativity Story that comes out on Friday, Dec 1. I am told by a few of the people that were privileged to see a sneak A Recently Spotted Bumper Sticker: 'Do whatever He tells you to do!' - Mary December 2006 preview that this is an amazingly dramatic movie that has a bit of humor to it as well. This 101 minute drama follows the life of the Virgin Mary and Joseph from the time of the Annunciation in Nazareth to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and several years afterward including the visit of the magi and the vengeful rage of King Herod. The two taglines are: 1. Her child would change the world. 2. One Couple. One Journey. One Child...who would change the world...forever. Please make this a family activity that you and your whole family go together to do this Advent and Christmas season. I know that this will be the one movie that I will not miss! Finally, as mentioned last month, I am looking for any individuals interested in helping with a reunion and fundraiser for campers and counselors at the Archeparchial Children s Camp at Ukrainian Park to take place in August, The first meeting will be on Saturday, December 16 at 11:30am here at the chancery. If you have past connections with the camp or are just interested in helping out, please give me a call or me. I would love to hear from you. That s everything for now! Have a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year and I will see you in January! Yours in Christ, Tamara Lisowski "Even though God is the wind beneath your wings, you still have to do a lot of flapping." 2 Page 2 What s Up with BLING, BLING? It s late at night and I am surfing through the channels. I pause for a second to see if anything good is on MTV. Hip hop artists step out of their Mercedes and BMWs with thick gold chains wrapped around their necks. They have huge diamonds on their fingers, they wear furs, and name brands are visible on every article of their clothing. A few channels higher and I find a movie on the Disney channel about a young, geeky girl who realizes suddenly that she is in fact a princess. Rags to riches, she is transformed slowly but surely into a refined young lady with a ball gown and tiara. Click, click with my remote and there is a man telling me of how he made his fortune and that I can make mine by simply dialing his number. He seems to think that by getting rich quick, I can become truly happy and leave my pitiful existence behind. Next, I find the QVC network; selling jewels at cut rate prices, luxury at minimal cost. Nearly every commercial appeals to my desire to be rich, have status, appear larger than life, dress in high fashion and flaunt my money and power. Even one of the Christian networks tells me that if I pray diligently and search the Bible, God will bless me with money far exceeding what I need. The next morning, on my way to work, I stop at the convenience store for coffee and gas. I take a look at the magazine rack and read titles like Money Magazine and Fortune. Even the magazines that aren t directly about money want me to seek out status and wealth. One is all about shiny electronic gadgets: cell phones, digital cameras, laptops, and plasma screen televisions. Another showcases the most exotic and expensive cars: Land Rovers, Mercedes, Jaguars. The gossip magazines tell of the extravagant lifestyles of movie stars, politicians, and pop artists. One article is about J-Lo s new diamond ring, another about the lavish weddings of the rich and famous. Every one on the television and in the magazines is bling-bling n, showing off their floss. At least that is how some people talk about it. But whether you say, bling bling, or you just call it flaunting status, the media loves it, and we are encouraged by advertisements and other forms of media to do it. From what I see on TV and the print media, it seems as if I m successful enough, and that means if I have enough money, I will be happy. My life will be fulfilled. Nearly everybody wants to be successful. That is why we go to school, work at our jobs and build our relationships. But can material wealth really give us a fulfilled life? Does bling bling equal success? Can we really measure our success by the stuff we own? The Gospel of Christ gives us a different measuring stick. Christ is asked in the Gospel, What must I do to inherit eternal life? At first, He tells the man that he must live by the commandments found in scripture. When the man asking the question claims that he already lives by the commandments, Christ responds by saying, Sell all that you have and follow me. Christ, the Son of God, could have come as a king or an emperor. He had all the power of God, but He chose to come as a poor man. So for the Church, success is measured in Christian virtue, not material wealth. It is more what you give to the poor than what you keep for yourself. It is more about peace in your heart, than about money in the bank. It s about love for God, not love for money and the stuff it can bring to you. So you might be asking the question, Can I be wealthy and still make it into heaven? After all, Christ said some pretty harsh things about wealth and the misuse of money. We can safely say Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult Taken from ~ yes, it is possible to be wealthy and to be granted salvation. But it is hard, very hard. The challenge is to love God more than money, to use the money you have (it might be a little and it might be a lot) generously for God s Glory. There is a story about a Russian saint, Seraphim, whose spiritual son asked how he could receive the Holy Spirit. The saint responded by comparing the spiritual life to having a bank account. Every time, he explained, that we practice Christian virtue it is like making a deposit. So, time spent in prayer, fasting, reading scripture, and serving the poor is time spent storing up treasure in the Kingdom of God. Christ even said, Sell all your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourself that will not be exhausted where no thief comes near and no moth destroys (Luke 12:33-34). So what he is saying is that by doing good works of generosity, we store up treasure in heaven. That type of treasure will last forever and ever, like we say in the liturgy, unto the ages of ages. Clothes and jewelry may go out of style, wear out, or be stolen. Our gadgets and devices become obsolete. Money is spent. But no one can take away what God gives to us when we devote our lives to Him. Here s the challenge: put the energy, time and money that you use toward the stuff you want, and instead use it toward your salvation. Give to your Church. Help out at a local soup kitchen. Buy an article of clothing (a nice one, something you would want for yourself) and give it to a clothing drive for the poor. Read your Bible or buy a book about the Church. While bling bling might loose its bling, the life giving love of Jesus Christ is strong and glorious yesterday, today, and tomorrow. by Dn. Constantine Bus Lazarakis

Page 4 WORLD YOUTH DAY 2008 IN AUSTRAILIA! Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News What is WYD? In 1984, Pope John Paul II invited the young people of the world to a special Youth Jubilee gathering in Rome. The story goes that on the morning of the event he peeked out of his window to see if anyone had come - 300,000 were there. In the United Nations International Year of Youth the Pope extended a second invitation 450,000 turned up. Seeing a need to celebrate the uniqueness of young people, Pope John Paul II called the first 'World Youth Day' in Rome on Palm Sunday Ever since, World Youth Day is celebrated at a diocesan level on Palm Sunday and every 2-3 years, all year olds are invited to a massive international gathering hosted in a different city Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Czestochowa (Poland), Denver (USA), Manila (The Philippines), Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Toronto (Canada) and Cologne (Germany) have all been hosts. Never before has WYD been held in Oceania, and only once in the southern hemisphere: Pilgrimage: A journey, esp. a long one, made to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion. PILGRIMAGE TO SYDNEY WHO? This is a Catholic celebration for the young people of the world. All young people aged are invited to attend World Youth Day (WYD). However, only youth ages 18 and older will be allowed to join the Ukrainian Catholic Youth of Canada Contingency, as we cannot legally allow minors to travel to WYD. WHAT? Each WYD, whether local or international, has a biblical theme chosen by the Pope. International WYDs generally follow a program of events including: Pilgrim welcoming mass: celebrated by the Bishop of the host diocese Catechesis - teachings based on the theme for the WYD, presented by bishops from around the world. Papal welcome ceremony Stations of the Cross a re-enactment of Jesus Christ's passion and death; Pilgrims walk, camp out and vigil with the Pope Closing mass, celebrated by the Pope The celebration typically includes a range of other activities for pilgrims, including: Journey of the WYD cross around the host country/region Days in the Diocese before WYD young people of the world are hosted in local dioceses (throughout Australia & New Zealand) preceding the week in Sydney Youth festivals - a range of exhibitions and presentations involving music, art, theatre, etc. by, for and with young people from all corners of the globe. WHERE? Sydney, Australia WHEN? July 15-20, 2008 Registration: From July 2007 Pre-registration: Begins now If you are interested in going to Australia for WYD 2008 there will be an informational meeting: At Holy Family Parish, 1001 Grant Ave, December 10, 2006 at 7pm Continued on Page 5

Volume 5, Issue 1 (con t from page 4) Page 5 WYD 2008! HOW MUCH? Estimated Cost per person for Canadian Pilgrims approx $ $ The Ukrainian Catholic Contingent from Canada will be in Australia for approx. 23 days. Cost of flights to Australia from Canada are currently, and are expected to cost around $2 000 per person. Registration for WYD, which is one week, is going to be approx. $300, which includes all your meals, transportation and accommodation while in Host City of Sydney. When our group is not being hosted, we will be staying in Hostels, which also adds a relatively low and reasonable cost per night. Other costs include travel from one city to another and other land or sea travel, meals and other daily costs. Further break down of costs will be given to Pilgrims upon completion of our itinerary. Passport and Visas are not included in this quote and will be an additional cost to the Pilgrim. Advice when fundraising: Start early Plan large activities, which draw people/money Get family and friends to help. Involve parish groups such as Ukrainian Catholic Women s League, Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, or K of C Advertise and remind people of your activities. Use your talents & contacts - it cuts down a lot of the costs. Days in the Diocese WHAT? Every pilgrim traveling to WYD is given the opportunity to register for Days in the Diocese (DiD). This is a chance to experience something of life with the people in the church of the host country. This gives the host country the opportunity to share their unique country and their warm hospitality by officially hosting pilgrims from various countries traveling to World Youth Day (WYD). The program for DiD may vary according to the pastoral area/region but usually include visits to local attractions & significant religious sites, celebrations of faith, hospitality, social justice activities and hosting by local people. WHEN? Dates are not yet finalized and will vary according to travel demands of the group and the hosting pastoral areas. However, the dates will probably be 9-13 July WYD08 Theme The WYD08 theme, received from The Holy Father is: 'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses.' Acts 1:8 This passage occurs after the death and resurrection of Jesus, just before his ascension to the Father. It represents the birth of the Church. The concepts behind the WYD08 logo The logo distils the essence of the theme for WYD08: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8). It highlights the promise made by Jesus to set fire upon the Earth by the power of the Holy Spirit which inspires the Pilgrims who come to Australia, to believe and witness to Him. Central to the logo is the Cross raised in victory, representing Christ and the life of witness which the Holy Spirit enables. It is the passion of the heart of Christ, poured out into the world from the Cross, which consumes the young people of Sydney, of Australia and of the world. The whiteness of the Cross indicates that Jesus is the light of the world. The flames of the logo represent the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in tongues of fire. They evoke the Sacrament of Confirmation and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The colors of red, orange, and yellow flowing throughout symbolize the Trinity and Unity of God. They also bring to mind the colors of the Australian outback. The blue of the logo represents the oceans that surround Australia, the waters of Baptism, the sea of humanity and Mary, full of grace. The Opera House is the symbol of Sydney, the host city for World Youth Day For more information about WYD, please visit If you or a group of youth from your parish is interested in joining the Ukrainian Catholic Contingency from Canada for WYD 2008, please contact the following: Sr. Darleane Pelechaty, SSMI 600 Cathedral Ave. Winnipeg, MB R2W 0Y5 (204) OR Fr Michael Smolinski, C.Ss.R. 188 Euclid Ave. Winnipeg, MB R2W 2X4 (204)

Page 6 ICE A recent article from the Toronto Star, "the ICE idea", is catching on and it is a very simple, yet important method of contact for you or a loved one in case of an emergency. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is program the number of a contact person or persons and store the name as "ICE". The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which numbers to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name to file "next of kin" under. Following a disaster in London The East Anglican Ambulance Service has launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign. The idea is that you store the word "ICE " in your mobile phone address book, and with it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency ". In an emergency situation, Emergency Services personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact your next of kin, by simply dialing the number programmed under "ICE". Please pass this on. It won't take too long before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc. Mary's Lamb Think carefully about what you will be reading. This is a new one for me... Mary had a little Lamb, His fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, The Lamb was sure to go. He followed her to school each day, T'wasn't even in the rule. It made the children laugh and play, To have a Lamb at school. And then the rules all changed one day, Illegal it became; To bring the Lamb of God to school, Or even speak His Name! Every day got worse and worse, And days turned into years. Instead of hearing children laugh, We heard gun shots and tears. What must we do to stop the crime, That's in our schools today? Let's let the Lamb come back to school, And teach our kids to pray!

Page 7 WHO S IN YOUR HEART? Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News A four-year-old was at the pediatrician's office for a check up. As the doctor looked in her ears with an otoscope, he asked, "Do you think I'll find Big Bird in here?" The little girl stayed silent. Next, the doctor took a tongue depressor and looked down her throat. He asked, "Do you think I'll find the Cookie Monster down there?" Again, the little girl was silent. Then the doctor put a stethoscope to her chest. As he listened to her heart beat, he asked, "Do you think I'll hear Barney in there?" "Oh, no!", the little girl replied, "Jesus is in my heart... Barney's on my underpants." FAMILY! Teacher Debbie Moon's first graders were discussing a picture of a family. One little boy in the picture had a different hair color than the other members. One of her students suggested that he was adopted. A little girl said, "I know all about adoption, I was adopted." "What does it mean to be adopted?", asked another child. "It means", said the girl, "that you grew in your mommy's heart instead of her tummy!" YOU ARE CHOSEN! Whenever I'm disappointed with my spot in life, I stop and think about little Jamie Scott. Jamie was trying out for a part in the school play. His mother told me that he'd set his heart on being in it, though she feared he would not be chosen. On the day the parts were awarded, I went with her to collect him after school. Jamie rushed up to her, eyes shining with pride and excitement. "Guess what, Mom," he shouted, and then said those words that will remain a lesson to me... "I've been chosen to clap and cheer." Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Fifty...vanity of vanities! (Ecclesiastes 1:2) "Dear young people, you are under threat from the bad use of advertising techniques, which plays upon the natural tendency to avoid effort and promises the immediate satisfaction of every desire, while consumerism that goes with it suggests that (you) should seek self-fulfillment especially in the enjoyment of material goods." --Pope John Paul II, Dilecti Amici Think About That - On the Lighter Side - The advertisements you see every day are very powerful. They are very convincing and will pull with great strength to get you to believe that material things will make you happy. But you can have all the money in the world and still be lonely, sad, and empty inside. The message that a product can make you happy by solving all your problems is a lie. Take Action Contact a nursing or retirement home in your community and ask if you can come and visit some of the residents. Take a friend with you and go visit at least two people in the nursing home. Talk to them about their lives and ask them from their perspective what really matters in life. God, help me to know that all the advertisements I see every day are trying to attract me to something Say A Prayer that really won't bring me happiness. Help me focus my attention on those things that really matter in life. Did You Know? The Pope's first pastoral visit outside of Italy was to Santo Domingo, Mexico, and the Bahamas in Jan Taken from...my Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. 9 Page 9 Volume 5, Issue 1 Youth Workers & Parents Getting to know your child Do you communicate with your child? Do you speak to your child? Do you listen to your child? Communication is more than speaking. Just talking to your child is only half the job. An average father of a child spends 50 hours a week sleeping, 40 hours a week working, 7 hours a week grooming but only 3 minutes a day speaking with their child. Multiplied over a lifetime, you can see the disaster. Don t be afraid to keep the lines of communication open. You can keep the lines of communication open by knowing how to listen and when to talk. Try these tips: 1. Encourage your children to feel comfortable telling you about problems they may be having. 2. Use a caring tone of voice to answer a child and use encouraging phrases to express interest and to keep the conversation going. 3. Create an environment conducive to talking. 4. Listen closely to what your child says. 5. Don t prepare what you will say while your child is speaking. 6. Ask their opinion and ask effective questions. What Do You Think..??? of the television show Seventh Heaven. The show continually portrays issues that affect teens today in an accurate way. More importantly, they work through the various issues presented. of Major League baseball and Alex Rodriguez. They placed so great an emphasis on material gain through his $252 million salary. Although he s one of the best players in major league baseball, $140,000 per game??? Youth want to be cherished for who they are, not just for their abilities or achievements "One of the greatest incentive's you can give people to do good work is praise not criticism. Praise what is good; help them correct the bad. If you make doing good work a thoroughly enjoyable experience, they will be glad to do it again." "Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you'd have preferred to talk." Doug Larson ~ Christmas Prayer ~ "May the forgiving spirit of Him to whom we dedicate this season prevail again on earth. May hunger disappear and terrorists cease their senseless acts. May people live in freedom, worshiping as they see fit, loving others. May the sanctity of the home be ever preserved. May peace, everlasting peace, reign supreme. Amen." Thought for the Month! "Smart is when you believe only half of what you hear. Brilliant is when you know which half to believe."
