I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful summer and are ready to get back into the swing of things! We have a very busy fall ahead of us which I will get into later, but for now I would just like to wish God s blessings on all the youth and young adults who will be returning to school, that they may enjoy success and be rewarded for their efforts! First of all, some thanks. On the weekend of August 24 to 26, the youth and young adult executive held a reunion of campers and counselors at Ukrainian Park Camp. The weather was beautiful and those that attended had a wonderful time. My thanks go out to my planning team who worked for countless months organizing the event, to Fr. Isidore and Deacon Stefan for celebrating the opening Moleben and to Metropolitans Lawrence and Michael for the closing Liturgy, and also to Rick Yaskiw the hospodar and the St Adolphe Motor Inn caterers for all their help during the weekend. Most of all, I would like to thank all the guests who attended and made the weekend truly special. Education will never become as expensive as ignorance UCY/UCYA Winnipeg From The Director s Chair Now, on to our busy fall schedule. On Saturday, September 29, we will be hosting a marriage retreat/workshop at St. Andrew s Parish from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Fr. Charles Joanides will be the retreat master and will speak about, among other things, communication techniques, why marriages fail, and how faith helps your marriage. This retreat is not only for newly married or engaged couples, it is open to absolutely everyone, single or married, dating or celebrating their 50 th anniversary. Fr. Charles is a dynamic and enjoyable speaker and a wonderful and informative time is sure to be had by all. To register, contact either myself or Fr. Richard Soo at the chancery at Later on that evening, the annual fundraising dinner for Ukrainian Park Camp will take place at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Centre, 390 Marion St. As indicated by the reunion, Ukrainian Park is a special place for a number of people in our community, especially our youth. If you can attend, please make an effort to. A Recently Spotted Bumper Sticker: Loved The Wedding, Invite Me To The Marriage - God September 2007 Also in September, the Ukrainian Redemptorists will be concluding their 100 th Anniversary celebrations. Among the celebrations will be a special youth and young adult component on Thursday, September 20 at 7:30 pm in the St. Andrew s Parish Hall. Fr. Maurice Nutt, CSsR, will give an informative and energetic talk. This is hosted by the Redemptorist Young Adults in Action and you can register by contacting Michelle Thiessen at or ukryvm@mts.net. Finally, Convention 2007 will take place from October at the Canad Inns Garden City. As usual, a special youth component will take place which will conclude with the election of a new executive for the term. Those that have attended conventions in the past have really enjoyed the experience and it has brought them closer to youth and young adults in other parishes. If you would like to attend, please call me at That s all for now, see you in October! Yours in Christ, Tamara Lisowski The strongest memory, is weaker than the palest ink. Chinese Proverb

2 Page 2 Check out the new youth & young adult web page: What s Up with GOD? An INTERVIEW with GOD I dreamed I had an interview with God. "Come in," God said to me, "So, you would like to interview Me?" "If you have the time," I said. God smiled and said: "My time is called eternity and is enough to do everything; what questions do you have in mind to ask me?" "None that are new to you. What's the one thing that surprises you most about mankind?" God answered: "That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and they die as if they had never lived..." God's hands took mine and we were silent. After a long period, I said, "May I ask you another question?" "As a Parent, what would you ask your children to do?" God replied with a smile: "To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. What they can do is to let themselves be loved. To learn that it takes years to build trust, and a few seconds to destroy it. To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives. To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. There will be others better or worse than they are. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that they should control their attitudes, otherwise their attitudes will control them. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to heal them. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that there are persons that love them dearly, but simply do not know how to show their feelings. To learn that money can buy everything but happiness. To learn that while at times they may be entitled to be upset, that does not give them the right to upset those around them. To learn that great dreams do not require great wings, but a landing gear to achieve. To learn that true friends are scarce, he/she who has found one has found a true treasure. To learn that it is not always enough that they be forgiven by others, but that they forgive themselves. To learn that they are masters of what they keep to themselves and slaves of what they say. Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult Taken from ~ REQUESTS & SUBMISSIONS ~ youth@archeparchy.ca To learn that they shall reap what they plant; if they plant gossip they will harvest intrigues, if they plant love they will harvest happiness. To learn that true happiness is not to achieve their goals but to learn to be satisfied with what they already achieved. To learn that happiness is a decision. They decide to be happy with what they are and have, or die from envy and jealousy of what they lack. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different. To learn that those who are honest with themselves without considering the consequences go far in life. To learn that even though they may think they have nothing to give, when a friend cries with them, they find the strength to appease the pain. To learn that by trying to hold on to loved ones, they very quickly push them away; and by letting go of those they love, they will be side by side forever. To learn that even though the word "love" has many different meanings, it loses its value when it is overstated. Anonymous

7 Check out the new youth & young adult web page: Page 7 - On the Lighter Side - Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News A man was driving to work when a truck ran a stop sign, hit his car broadside, and knocked him cold. Passersby pulled him from the wreck and revived him. He began a terrific struggle and had to be tranquilized by the medics. Later, when he was calm, they asked him why he struggled so. He said, "I remember the impact, then nothing. I woke up on a concrete slab in front of a huge, flashing 'Shell' sign...and somebody was standing in front of the "S"! PRAYER An elderly gentleman passed his granddaughter's room one night and overheard her repeating the alphabet in an oddly reverent way. What on earth are you up to?" he asked. "I'm saying my prayers," explained the little girl. "But I can't think of exactly the right words tonight, so I'm just saying all the letters. God will put them together for me, because He knows what I'm thinking." PAINTING Little Bobby was spending the weekend with his grandmother after a particularly trying week in kindergarten. His grandmother decided to take him to the park on Saturday morning. It had been snowing all night and everything was beautiful. His grandmother remarked..."doesn't it look like an artist painted this scenery? Did you know God painted this just for you?" Bobby said, "Yes, God did it and he did it left handed." This confused his grandmother a bit, and she asked him "What makes you say God did this with his left hand?" "Well," said Bobby, "we learned at Sunday School last week that Jesus sits on God's right hand!" Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Thirty-Five The ways of life... (Acts 2:28) "It is along the paths of daily life that you can meet the Lord!" --Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day XII Think About That When you wake up each morning, think about the "path" you take through your house to get ready for the day. Now, where along that "path" might you "meet the Lord?" Is it in your brother or sister as they rush for the same bathroom? Maybe the Lord is in your mom or dad as they get breakfast ready for you? Take Action This week as you walk along the "paths" to wherever you are going, keep your eyes open for the Lord. At the end of each day, name one place you saw the Lord along the "paths" of your life. Say A Prayer Lord, I know that you are everywhere. You are in the people I meet everyday. Please, help me today to see you in the faces of my family, friends, teachers, and even strangers. Did You Know? The Pope's paternal grandparents were Maciej and Anna Wojtyla. His paternal grandfather was a master tailor. Taken from...my Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. 9 Volume 5, Issue 8 Page 9 Do the Right Thing Michael Josephson, Character Counts A father asked his son to return a shopping cart they had just used. The son protested, "C mon, Dad! There are carts all over. No one returns them. That s why they hire people to collect them." After a brief argument, Mom chimed in, "For heaven s sake, it s no big deal. Let s go." The Dad was about to surrender when he noticed an elderly couple walking together to return their cart. After a moment he said, "Son, there are two kinds of people in this world: those who put their carts away and those who don t. We are the kind that returns their shopping cart. Now go return the cart!" Obviously, this story is about more than grocery carts. It s about doing the right thing in a world that promotes rationalizations and excuses, and demeans or trivializes simple acts of virtue. I suppose another way of putting it is There two kinds of people: Those who have the character to do what they ought to and those who find reasons not to. People of character do the right thing even if no one else does, not because they think it will change the world, but because they refuse to be changed by the world. If you really knew and understood the pain others bear, your compassion would lead you to tears most of your life. It s good to have money and the things money can buy, but it s good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure you haven t lost the things that money cannot buy." George H. Lorimer Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not." Ralph Teaching, like study, is clearly both formal and informal. The parent can lecture as much as the professor. The grandparent can be concerned with the little one s souls as much as the priest. Even friends and peers are teachers. They push and prod our clay, leave considerable impact on our meaning, our reality. Like it or not, each day we are lectured by a variety of informal professors on the ways of the world, both for good and for bad. John Carmody, The Progressive Pilgrim Thought for the Month! In life, the higher you want to go, the deeper you must dig your foundation." Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR
