Christ is Born! Can you believe that another year has passed! Whether you celebrated on December 25 or January 7, I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas break and I hope that the enthusiasm with which we ended 2007 will continue to build in 2008! First of all, there are so many people to thank from December. To all those who donated to the World Vision fund to buy farm animals and supplies for a developing country, a big round of applause! We raised enough money to buy 1 goat, 10 fruit trees, 4 rabbits, 3 little pigs, 2 hens and one rooster. Also, to all those who filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child again this year, thank you. Your continued support of the youth and young adults is appreciated. On Saturday, December 15 our youth and young adult meeting was a little different in format in that, after the business meeting, the executive members went downstairs to assemble ornaments to be distributed at the Holy Family Nursing Home on December 30. I was impressed by the creativity and care with which the ornaments were made and how well everyone worked together. Afterward, the members were treated to a pizza dinner. Thanks also go to Connie Dziedzic and St. Nicholas Parish for taking some of the ornaments to assemble off-site and help lighten Enter God s house reverently, pray trustingly, sing joyfully, listen silently, worship expectantly UCY/UCYA Winnipeg From The Director s Chair the executive s load! The following Saturday, December 22 was the youth and young adult pot-luck dinner and gift exchange at St. Michael s Parish. This was an informal gathering with the food provided by the youth and young adult executive. Thank you to all those who prepared food and assisted in any way to make this first dinner/gift exchange a great one! Finally, on Sunday December 30 a dedicated group of carolers once again visited the home of Metropolitan Lawrence and the Holy Family Nursing Home & Tower to distribute ornaments and spread a little Christmas cheer! This is the 6 th year that we have caroled at the home and we are always well-received. Thank you to Holy Family Nursing Home for arranging this year s visit and to all those who came out and shared their voices! Moving on to the New Year, our first event will be on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Cook s Creek Immaculate Conception parish and will be a skating/movie night/ sleepover at the parish. This will be the second in A Recently Spotted Bumper Sticker: The more you complain, the longer God makes you live. January 2008 our series of events to be held in different parishes each month throughout the year. If you would like to attend, please call Tamara at Also in the New Year during the Great Lent, the Youth and Young Adult Office will begin holding workshops for people interested in working with youth and young adults at the parish level on Sunday evenings beginning February 3 and going to March 9, Topics to be covered will include youth ministry, Christian leadership, Christian ministry skills, youth and prayer and worship, youth and justice service, youth and evangelization and catechesis. Our goal would be to see at least on person from every parish present at these workshops so that we may develop a network of parish youth directors to implement programs in their various parishes. Vow to do some of the things you ve always wanted to do but couldn t find the time. Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Share a funny story with someone whose spirits are dragging. A good laugh can be very good medicine. Vow not to make a promise you don t think you can keep. Pay a debt. Give a soft answer. Free yourself of envy and malice. Encourage some youth to do his or her best. Share your experience, and offer support. Young people need role models. Make a genuine effort to stay in closer touch with family and good friends. Resolve to stop magnifying small problems and shooting from the lip. Words that you have to eat can be hard to digest. Find the time to be kind and thoughtful. All of us have the same allotment: 24 hours a day. Give a compliment. It might give someone a badly needed lift. Think things through. Forgive an injustice. Listen more. Be kind. Apologize when you realize you are wrong. An apology never diminishes a person. It elevates him. Don t blow your own horn. If you ve done something praiseworthy, someone win notice eventually. Try to understand a point of view that is different from your own. Few things are 100 percent one way or another. Examine the demands you make on others. Lighten up. When you feel like blowing your top, ask yourself, "Will it matter a week from today?" Laugh the loudest when the joke is on you. The sure way to have a friend is to be one. We are all connected by our humanity, and we need each other. Avoid malcontents and pessimists. They drag you down and contribute nothing. Don t discourage a beginner from trying something risky. Nothing ventured means nothing gained. Be optimistic. The can-do spirit is the fuel that makes things go. Go to war against animosity and complacency. Express your gratitude. Give credit when it s due and even when it isn t. It will make you look good. They never go out of style. When courage is needed, ask yourself, "If not me, who? If not now, when?" Take better care of yourself. Remember, you re all you ve got. Pass up that second helping. You really don t need it. Vow to eat more sensibly. You ll feel better and look better, too. Don t put up with secondhand smoke. Nobody has the right to pollute your air or give you cancer. If someone says, "This is a free country," remind him or her that the country may be free, but no person is free if he has a habit he can t control. Return those books you borrowed. Reschedule that missed dental appointment. Clean out your closet. Take those photos out of the drawer and put them in an album. If you see litter on the sidewalk, pick it up instead of walking over it. Give yourself a reality check. Phoniness is transparent, and it is tiresome. Take pleasure in the beauty and the wonders of nature. A flower is God s miracle. Walk tall, and smile more. You ll look 10 years younger. Don t be afraid to say, "I love you." Say it again. 3 Page 3 What is...ukrainian Christmas? For the Ukrainian people Christmas is the most important family holiday of the whole year. It is celebrated solemnly, as well as merrily, according to ancient customs that have come down through the ages and are still observed today. Ukrainian Christmas festivities begin on Christmas Eve ([G]Dec.24; [J]Jan.6.) and end on the Feast of the Epiphany. The Christmas Eve Supper or Sviata Vecheria (Holy Supper) brings the family together to partake in special foods and begin the holiday with many customs and traditions, which reach back to antiquity. The rituals of the Christmas Eve are dedicated to God, to the welfare of the family, and to the remembrance of the ancestors. With the appearance of the first star which is believed to be the Star of Bethlehem, the family gathers to begin supper. The table is covered with two tablecloths, one for the ancestors of the family, the second for the living members. Under the table, as well as under the tablecloths some hay is spread to remember that Christ was born in a manger. The table always has one extra place-setting for the deceased family members, whose souls, according to belief, come on Christmas Eve and partake of the food. After all the preparations have been completed, the father offers each member of the family a piece of bread dipped in honey, which had been previously blessed in church. He then leads the family in prayer. After the prayer the father extends his best wishes to everyone with the greeting Khrystos Razhdaietsia (Christ is born), and the family sits down to a twelve-course meatless Christmas Eve Supper. There are twelve courses in the Supper, because according to the Christian tradition each course is dedicated to one of Christ's Apostles. 4 Page 4 Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News Teach the children... Late one Christmas Eve, I sank back, tired but content, into my easy chair. The kids were in bed, the gifts were wrapped, the milk and cookies waited by the fireplace for Santa. As I sat back admiring the tree with its decorations, I couldn't help feeling that something important was missing. It wasn't long before the tiny twinkling tree lights lulled me to sleep. I don't know how long I slept, but all of a sudden I knew that I wasn't alone. I opened my eyes, and you can imagine my surprise when I saw Santa Claus himself standing next to my Christmas tree. He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot just as the poem described him, but he was not the "jolly old elf" of Christmas legend. The man who stood before me looked sad and disappointed, and there were tears in his eyes. "Santa, what's wrong?" I asked, "Why are you crying?" "It's the children," Santa replied sadly. "But Santa, the children love you," I said. "Oh, I know they love me, and they love the gifts I bring them," Santa said, "but the children of today seem to have somehow missed out on the true spirit of Christmas. It's not their fault. It's just that the adults, many of them not having been taught themselves, have forgotten to teach the children." "Teach them what?" I asked. Santa's kind old face became soft, more gentle. His eyes began to shine with something more than tears. He spoke softly. "Teach the children the true meaning of Christmas. Teach them that the part of Christmas we can see, hear, and touch is much more than meets the eye. Teach them the symbolism behind the customs and traditions of Christmas which we now observe. Teach them what it is they truly represent." Santa reached into his bag and pulled out a tiny Christmas tree and set it on my mantle. "Teach them about the Christmas tree. Green is the second color of Christmas. The stately evergreen, with its unchanging color, represents the hope of eternal life in Jesus. Its needles point heavenward as a reminder that mankind's thoughts should turn heavenward as well." Santa reached into his bag again and pulled out a shiny star and placed it at the top of the small tree. "The star was the heavenly sign of promise. God promised a Savior for the world and the star was the sign of the fulfillment of that promise on the night that Jesus Christ was born. Teach the children that God always fulfills His promises, and that wise men still seek Him." "Red," said Santa, "is the first color of Christmas." "He pulled forth a red ornament for the tiny tree. Red is deep, intense, vivid. It is the color of the lifegiving blood that flows through our veins. It is the symbol of God's greatest gift. Teach the children that Christ gave his life and shed his blood for them that they might have eternal life. When they see the color red, it should remind them of that most wonderful gift." Santa found a silver bell in his pack and placed it on the tree. "Just as lost sheep are guided to safety by the sound of the bell, it continues to ring today for all to be guided to the fold. Teach the children to follow the true Shepherd, who gave His life for the sheep." (Con t on page 5)

5 Volume 6, Issue 2 Page 5 Teach the children... (con t from page 4) Santa placed a candle on the mantle and lit it. The soft glow from its one tiny flame brightened the room. "The glow of the candle represents how people can show their thanks for the gift of God's son that Christmas Eve long ago. Teach the children to follow in Christ's foot steps...to go about doing good. Teach them to let their light so shine before people that all may see it and glorify God. This is what is symbolized when the twinkle lights shine on the tree like hundreds of bright, shining candles, each of them representing one of God's precious children, their light shining for all to see." Again Santa reached into his bag and this time he brought forth a tiny red and white striped cane. As he hung it on the tree he spoke softly. "The candy cane is a stick of hard white candy. White to symbolize the virgin birth and sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock the foundation of the church, and the firmness of God's promises. The candy cane is in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth. It also represents the Good Shepherd's crook, which He uses to reach down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray. The original candy cane had three small red stripes, which are the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed, and a large red stripe that represents the shed blood of Jesus, so that we can have the promise of eternal life. "Teach these things to the children." Santa brought out a beautiful wreath made of fresh, fragrant greenery tied with a bright red bow. "The bow reminds us of the bond of perfection, which is love. The wreath embodies all the good things about Christmas for those with eyes to see and hearts to understand. It contains the colors of red and green and the heaventurned needles of the evergreen. The bow tells the story of good will towards all and its color reminds us of Christ's sacrifice. Even its very shape is symbolic, representing eternity and the eternal nature of Christ's love. It is a circle, without beginning and without end. These are the things you must teach the children." I asked, "But where does that leave you, Santa?" The tears gone now from his eyes, a smile broke over Santa's face. "Why bless you, my dear," he laughed, "I'm only a symbol myself. I represent the spirit of family fun and the joy of giving and receiving. If the children are taught these other things, there is no danger that I'll ever be forgotten." "I think I'm beginning to understand." "That's why I came," said Santa. "You're an adult. They are very convincing and will pull with great strength to get you to believe that material things will make you happy. But you can have all the money in the world and still be lonely, sad, and empty inside. The message that a product can make you happy by solving all your problems is a lie. Take Action Contact a nursing or retirement home in your community and ask if you can come and visit some of the residents. Take a friend with you and go visit at least two people in the nursing home. Talk to them about their lives and ask them from their perspective what really matters in life. Say A Prayer God, help me to know that all the advertisements I see every day are trying to attract me to something that really won't bring me happiness. Help me focus my attention on those things that really matter in life. Did You Know? 8 Volume 6, Issue 2 Page 8 WYD 2008 News Here are some notes/reminders/decisions from the last WYD 2008 meeting. 1. Next meeting - To be announced 2. People must register individually for WYD. Go to the website wyd2008.org and follow the links. You won't be able to complete the process, but you can do more than half of the process. Our group number is You'll also need flight information. Here's what we know. We arrive in Australia at Brisbane on July 1 on NZ We arrive in Sydney on July 14 on QF We leave Australia on July 30 on NZ I don't have our flight that leaves Sydney on July 23. We are a part of the Ukrainian Eparchy for Days in the Diocese. 3. We'll finish the fundraising letter at this meeting. Each person will send one letter. 4. Upcoming Fundraisers and Dates/Coordinators: Peak of the Market Boxes (late Jan.), Caroling (few days in Dec. and a few days in January), Bud Spud and Steak (May 10) 5. 2nd deposits can be paid at this meeting if possible. Mike July 15-20, ~ From the Chancery Pantry ~ PUFFED WHEAT SQUARES WITH HONEY Ingredients: 1 cup butter or margarine 1/2 cup Corn Syrup 1 tsp Honey 1 1/2 Tbsp Peanut Butter 1 Cup Brown Sugar ******* 1 tsp Vanilla 8 cups Puffed Wheat Directions: 1. Add the first 5 ingredients together and boil in a large pot for 1 minute, stirring continually 2. Add the vanilla & stir 3. Mix in the puffed wheat 4. Press into a cake pan, pressing down with hand which was greased with 1/2 tsp of butter or margarine Enjoy! Note: To make it chocolaty add 1 teaspoon cocoa (optional)

Jackson Brown, Jr. 21 Words To Change Your Life Anonymous, Sower s Seeds That Nurture Family Values, # 92 In the spring of 1871, a young man picked up a book and read twenty-one words that had a profound effect on his future. A medical student, he was worried about passing a final examination, worried about what to do, where to go, how to build up a practice, how to make a living. The twenty-one words that this young med student read helped him to become the most famous physician of his generation. He even was knighted by the King of England. When he died, two huge volumes containing 1,466 pages were required to tell the story of his life. His name was Sir William Osler. Saint s Corner Also known as Anthony of Egypt; Anthony the Great; Father of Cenobites; Father of Western Monasticism Memorial 17 January Name Meaning inestimable Profile Following the death of his parents when he was about 20, he insured that his sister completed her education, then sold his house, furniture, and the land he owned, gave the proceeds to the poor, joined the anchorites who lived nearby, and moved into an empty sepulchre. At age 35 he moved alone to the desert, living 20 years in an abandoned fort. Anthony barricaded the place for solitude, but admirers broke in. He miraculously healed people, and agreed to be the spiritual counselor of others. His recommendation was to base life on the Gospel. Word spread, and so many disciples arrived that Anthony founded two monasteries on the Nile, one at Pispir, one at Arsinoe. Many of those who lived near him supported themselves by making baskets and brushes, and from that came his patronage of those trades. Anthony briefly left his seclusion in 311, going to Alexandria to fight Arianism, and to comfort the victims of Maximinus' persecution. At some point in his life, he met with his sister again. She, too, had withdrawn from the world, and directed a community of nuns. Anthony retired to the desert, living in a cave on Mount Colzim. Descriptions paint him as uniformly modest and courteous. His example led many to take up the monastic life, and to follow his way. Friend late in life of Saint Paul the Hermit, and buried the aged anchorite, leading to his patronage of gravediggers. His biography was written by his friend Saint Athanasius. His relationship with pigs and patronage of swineherds is a little complicated. Skin diseases were sometimes treated with applications of pork fat, which reduced inflammation and itching. As Anthony's intervention aided in the same conditions, he was shown in art accompanied by a pig. People who saw the art work, but did not have it explained, thought there was a direct connection between Anthony and pigs - and people who worked with swine took him as their patron.
